Could I sell a domain name based on search data?

Hi,

I have a domain name for a two word keyword that Google shows as having more than 1000 monthly searches, high competition and a CPC of $2. I haven't been doing anything with it currently. Is it a good idea to sell the domain name? Can I get good value just based on the data for the keyword from Google?

Any suggestions on how/where to get started? (I am considering GoDaddy Auctions)

Well 1000 searches are not that many to begin with even if they are exact searches. But you could get a good price if the niche that your domain is in is good.
If you can find a domain name with like 30.000 exacts searches you can sell it for a lot of money.

For 30,000 exacts, how much can one expect?

No. If I was, I could build a content site on that keyword.

It is something random that I came across and was thinking if I would be better off selling it as I don't foresee myself doing anything with it anytime soon.

You could list it with GoDaddy auctions, list it on Sedo, depending on the tld (.com, .net, etc...) you could go for a more structured auction, like Great Names or Moniker, but I have nearly 200 domains, and while I never really focused on selling them, in my experience the few good ones that have up for sale w/ 300,000k exacts haven't gotten any action, and their in a "hot" niche, so I would just list it with GD, and see if anyone bites.

    OR

Buy a relevant niche site for $25 or less from one of the Warriors (like Verena or sbucciarel) in the complete sites for sale section, and then sell it as a site. Probably better odds of making a buck or two that way, if not, you can always keep it and season it.

I've also seen people take out an ad here, and sell off some domains for a decent price (*like $40-$75) but, if it's just one domain, don't think that would be advisable.

If I was in a better position, I probably would've made you an offer if it's a decent name, but I had to put the brakes on buying anymore domains for now...the wife was getting mad at me.

Have you listed it anywhere for sale and still not got any offers?

As someone who shops for keyword domain names, I could just add "the" to the beginning of the domain name, or "site" to the end of the domain name and purchase that. Our domains would count the same towards ranking a site for that keyword.

Value would be in having an actual site on the keyword domain that you are selling, or an old domain with age, or a domain with PR...the name itself as a new domain means nothing really. (in my opinion)

A domain name is worth the site that is on the domain name. UNLESS it's a domain like Golf.com, or Tennis.com.

When buying a domain I look at many factors not just exact search volume and CPC, I look at things like its age, what it has been used for in the past, back links etc etc.

Exact match domain flipping can be profitable, but make sure you do your research well by using keyword tools and make sure you find hot niches to do the flips on!

Flippa is a great site to sell domains and full sites on too!
