My 5 Tips To Better Leverage Your Twitter Followers

Twitter is and will continue to be one of the powerhouse networking sites of our generation that allows ease of use for communication and marketing. As a business or Entrepreneur we need to see the return on investments from our social media efforts before we even think to start gather and using more tools and resources for the "hungry like the wolf" social media marketers. Here are some of my tips that I use to leverage Twitter and my followers as a great networking, branding and relationship-building tool. I dont necessarily directly use Twitter as a sales driven funnel however I network appropriately which in turn does return sales. Let's have a look right quick at some ideas and methods you can use to start making your Twitter working FOR you, instead of AGAINST you:

1. Personality Goes A Long Way - For me, my twitter followers most likely follow me for the way I post. A lot of my followers, I've known and met personally. I typically have a distinct way of posting online that can change rather rapidly. Being interesting is one of the biggest reasons why people follow of people on twitter. Straight-forward sales tactics on the Twitter platform just cant survive. Instead, concentrate on what's important and provide people with reasons WHY to follow your business. When tweeting information, make it intersting and engaging, maybe even bordline provoking. The "Tweeple" are aware of sales-pitches so focus instead on making them understand the organic value of engaging with you

2. Be Reciprocal And Follow Relevant Tweeters - Don't be a total loner out there on Twitter. When you first start out on Twitter don't worry so much on adding everyone that follows you. You will likely end up with a lot of "crap" followers who will do you no good and let's not forget about the vast amount of twitter spam out there. Limit who you add and only add those people from your Industry who are most relevant and interesting to you. As you can see above, I'm followed by over 3,300+ followers yet I only follow 77. A number which I know I could probably cut down another easy dozen or so. Look for the "smaller fish" at first until you've built up a brand that is recognized as these "small fish" will most likely follow you back.

3. Follow/Follower Ratio - Too many times, I've seen people on Twitter just start following people with out any research or regard. The words "Quality over Quantity" usually don't seem to have an effect on them. Don't make this mistake either or you will find yourself ending up with a Twitter account full of crap and irrevelant followers. Going ballistic by adding a bunch of followers can actually have a negative impact on your brand. Building a quality following organically takes time and patience. Don't use services that want you to buy Twitter followers. This is actually taking a step back in the big picture of what Twitter is all about.

Connecting with people and having conversations should be your goal.

4. Relationships Are Vital - It's what Twitter is all about. It's not about slinging CPA Offers or pushing ****ty products and services from your mass generated Twitter accounts. By all means if you are doing this, I can't stop you nor is it any of my business to tell you to stop. I'm in the business for building longevity, heavy branding and ultimately more traffic to my sites....the right way. If someome tweets or retweets at you on of your posts, don't just make it a point to "get back at them". You need to consider this as an "engagement" and start talking with this person. That's the greatest thing about being online and involved in services such as Twitter, you never know who you could potentially meet up with or heck, even partner with. People don't like to be ignored, however that can be easily forgotten about. However, when you acknowledge someone, it sticks with them. Try to be as personal as possible when speaking with others.

5. Before all else, Qualify YOUR Business - this will give you the general outline for what you want to accomplish on Twitter. If it doesn't make sense for your business, then don't use it. There are plenty of other sites and tools out there that make more sense to use with your Business. The best way to see if your business is ready for twitter is to concentrate and research on competitors and what they are doing on Twitter. Are people being active with them? If the audience is captivated by them, who will benefit and show continous interest? Only then can you decide if your business is right for Twitter.

    This was an excellent post!

I think that Twitter is fantastic because everyone has a Twitter account, many websites let you post your Twitter links, so it’s very good to use Twitter as a promotional tool. You get known online.

I’m going to follow your advice and stop following whoever may follow me. As a matter of fact, I stopped using Twitter because I started following so many people that I lost those I cared about…

I open my page, I quickly post my links and I quickly close my page. I’m not following anyone in fact, even though I usually 'follow' everyone who follows me, unless I don’t like their style, what is quite rare.

I’m using Twitter just to be followed, without doing anything to attain this goal besides posting my links. I don’t know if this is helping me make sales somehow.

This is a good advice on twitter.
I've been playing around with twitter but not really done much with it.
I thought what you need is a high number of follower only, but I agree that quality is important.
