An Open Letter To All Newbies... From A Newbie

Hey people.

Most of you won't know me but that's not the point. It's been a while since I've posted, and to be honest, this might be the first real post from me that might actually help someone.

Let me start with this. I first went into Online marketing at the end of 2006 (aged 15). And up till recently, the only money I made was the occasional sale. Not much to show for more than 2 years eh?

Right now I can make anywhere between US$80 - US$100 a week. And yup, that is a pretty pathetic amount for a lot of you guys. But for an even greater amount, it is something that they would LOVE to get! Why? Because though small, at least it is a consistent amount of money that I'm bringing in. It most certainly beats the few dollars I would have been lucky to make once every few months in the past!

Now after doing much thinking, I came to realize one thing. And when I did realize this, I thought to myself "Jeez Prashant, you must be one of the biggest idiots around!"

You see people, I used to look at Internet Marketing as some sort of get rich quick thing. I used to think that you can pay no money upfront and make a decent living, by which I mean you'd be making a few thousand bucks a month.

Now while I'm aware that this is possible, I haven't seen the results from my own efforts. I'm not saying bum marketing sucks and doesn't work or whatever, I'm just saying that it hasn't worked as well as I would have liked for me. Evidently I screwed up somewhere along the way. But that is not my point.

To actually believe that money can be made online, you need to be making something regularly, no matter how small. And $100 a week is a mighty small sum! So many easily make that a day. But the thing is, by seeing this amount come in weekly, it has helped me to believe that I can make larger amounts as well. I mean come on! If you don't see anything coming in, you aren't going to believe that you can do it too.

I mean in my case, whenever I see success stories, I don't feel any great amount of joy for the person. I do feel motivated to do better though. But you know what drives this motivation?? JEALOUSY! And while most of you may not admit it, I'm pretty sure you feel jealous when you are screwing up while someone else is making money. It's like at school when your classmate would get an A while you'd barely scrape through.

And after long last, I come to my next point (which might be the final point as well! ha). You may see a lot of people have great success with article marketing, ppc marketing and all the other forms of marketing out there. But don't focus 100% of your allocated time and energy on making these campaigns work. Because it is going to take some hard work (unless you have someone literally guiding you step by step).

Here is what I suggest you do on top of these marketing campaigns. Do freelance work. Because are pretty much guaranteed to make money. And guess what? You can use some of this money to invest in your marketing campaigns. Overtime you may be able to hire a coach who could guide you to making your campaigns a blistering success! (with the cans, mays and coulds in these last couple of lines, all this sounds rather hypothetical. but i can't help it, i'm an economics student )

Freelance work is what I've been doing. My strengths are in my writing, so I do writing jobs (articles, sales letters etc). You could be good at graphic design or website design. Or maybe you have a thing for programming. There are loads and loads of jobs out there that you can do. Obviously don't work for just any price (unless you are in desperate need for the money, or if you are fine with doing so).

Get yourself out there, make it known to people that you have a service that can potentially make life a hell of a lot easier for them. What are your sigs for?? haha.

Well I'm off to study for my econs test. The teacher has made it rather clear he will be pretty pissed if we fail (he's the new head of department, he can't have his class doing badly for the subject he's in charge off..)

Cheers

Prashant

The important thing is that you are generating a regular income from your online activities. Right now you are a student. I would have loved to have had $100 coming in weekly when I was in college.

It also sounds like you have learned a valuable lesson that many others here still need to learn. Eschewing the quick buck for a steady income is a smart move. It's the only way to keep making money on the Internet, because even if you do get the quick bucks they are soon gone.

        Prashant,

You've conquered a great hurdle in Internet marketing, "consistent income". That's great, keep up the good work.

Now that you have achieved that goal you may want to look into why article marketing didn't work for you.

To make money in article marketing you need to know how to write and how to sell. You've already developed your writing skills so perhaps you need to work on your sales skills.

Good writing is one thing. People like to read interesting and informative articles. Persuasive writing is a little different. It's how to get people to do what you want them to do.

A good book on the subject is "Web Copy That Sells" by Maria Veloso. You can get it on Amazon.

The reason that I'm telling you this is because if you write an article and sell it once you only get paid once. If you write an article that leads to a sale of a product or service you can make money over and over again with that same article.

I know for a fact that if you can consistently make $100 per wk. then you can amp that up and make $1000 per wk. Have some vision. You're closer than you think.

exactly kevin. the most lucrative way isn't always going to be the best way to make money when you first start out. because you are bound to struggle. and you will give up. but even if you do "simpler" jobs such as article writing, atleast you are making something! and this will help you realize that there is indeed potential to make money online, and in turn it will prevent you from giving up so early.

I have made hundreds of thousands of dollars on the 'net. It involves learning to program, and joining a decent firm.

However, that is not why I am here. I truly believe that passive cash flow (i.e. money coming to you whether you work or not) is far superior to just making a quick buck.

Imagine the changes you could affect in your life if you KNEW you would get paid each and every month!

but the passive income isn't gonna straight away. it takes quite a bit of time. i'm not saying people shouldn't be aiming to build avenues of passive income. i'm simply saying that you should do some work, on top of any marketing campaigns to earn passive income, that guarantees some form of income, eg. writing articles for other people.

hey john and capone. thanks for your kind words. but i wrote the post to make newbies realise that they should look to make a consistent amount of money (1 great way is to be a freelancer) so that they can re-invest in themselves with money that they have already earned.

this solves a major of problem.

they don't have to borrow money from people and hence rack up huge uneccessary debts.

so yah, john and capone, while i really do appreciate your kind words, i just want it to be known that i didn't start this thread to show off or whatever. even when i start making a 1000 bucks a week, you won't catch me showing off.

    Prashant,

You are RIGHT ON... and the idea of doing freelance work is a good one.

I train people to do this exact thing, and it works great. The money is nice, but the best part is being paid to learn and improve my skills.

Also, by taking good care of my freelance clients, I have built relationships that have lead to many opportunities, partnerships and income down the road.

If you are serious about internet marketing, then you need to DO internet marketing... and being paid to do it while you learn is GENIUS.

I am hoping that I get this right...Thanks for the reminder that cashflow won't be the first avenue of an income stream. I understand that fully, but that is where I have set my sights. Again, not the first revenue stream (and it is more likely the last stream), but I am hoping that I will eventually be able to build a powerful income stream for the future.

    Hey Scott,

Keep the faith, bud! If you persist, then you will succeed... and if you are steadfast in your desire for passive income, then you will find it.

I started to really make progress when I let go of my expectation and timelines, and just committed to the process. Once I decided that I would get it no matter how long it takes, and I relaxed about reaching some arbitrary goals, it all began to flow.

Granted, I don't have 100% passive income now... but I have several things working for me that are building up steadily.

Oh yes - and be sure its fun! Whats the point of playing with any of this if you aren't having fun?

I always used the following to spur me on
when I made an amount in a day I would say
If I can make $?? on 1 day there is no reason why I cant make that every day.
as time goes by and you keep working forward the amount just gets bigger
and the frequency of payment increases
