Selling Banner Space on Sites

Hi,

I recently had an offer from someone to purchase banner space on one of my sites on a fee basis.
I have never done this, and quite frankly don't have a clue. Can anyone enlighten me a wee bit or direct me somewhere? Such as, Is it safe? What is a good fee? What info do I give them? Would I give them login details, for instance? And anything else I should be on the lookout for.

Thank you,

Eila

  • You might want to do some research on the sender. Quite often these are scams or otherwise not genuine offers.

The way I do it is charge a monthly fee which they pay upfront by paypal then they can email me the banner and url. I don't have a fancy 3rd party access area and I won't give anyone access to my admin cp.

I think you'll find that some serious space buyers will want to know more specifics about the traffic the site is getting. Since Alexa numbers can be gamed so easily, there are a lot of skeptics out there. One of my clients sells banner ads on his site and gives the first 30 days free...if the buyer sees some action, then it's pretty easy to get them paying monthly.

Last time I talked to him I think it was $100 per month.

Thank you everyone. You have all been very helpful. Good idea about researching, and thanks for the ballpark figure.

This is how I've done it in the past. Beyond the question of admin access, I don't want to give someone the ability to switch out the banner at will. I approved all banners and destinations. I was willing to do some negotiating on fees and trials, but the approval process was a take it or leave it proposition.

Did I end up leaving money on the table? Possibly.

Did I lose any sleep over it? Not a wink...

    Here's what you can do:

    1. Check out the offer - what is it about? If you are not comfy with it reject the offer
    2. Ask them where they want the ad located and quote them a monthly fee
    3. Tell them to send at least one month advance payment
    4. If the payment is good ask them for the banner and put it in your site.

    That's it..end of story..

If they are serious, when you tell them to make an advance payment after you
both negotiated the fee, they'll send you the payment, otherwise they might not
    be that serious.

I think you should setup everything via buysellads.com. Also, go to that site and you will get an idea of pricing.
