Hosting a blog? Honestly

Is it better to host your blog on your own, then using a free hosted blog (like blogger, or Wordpress.COM) to make money?

Absolutely, it gives you so much more freedom.

If you are hosting your website that means you can't sell it.

It also means that they can remove you content with little to no notice.

And if you are planning on using paid traffic, you want to host your website yourself.

I can so relate. I was doing great on blogger sites and couldn't understand why all the fuss about hosting your own account----until one day, after years, boom, one of my clients blogs was gone and no way to get it back and no explanation.

Once I learned how easy it was to host my own blogs and indeed create my own webpages (and I had no previous knowledge), I do it all myself now. That is why I help people with all the stuff that I found so difficult to do myself.

I would say, do it step by step and get a hosted wp blog up but leave your blogger blogs up because I still have some blogger blogs on page one of google getting traffic.

      Goog luck.

I believe Blogger gives you a way to self-host your blog. I guess the best option though would be just to take your posts, and put them on your own blog.

Hosting your own blog isn't expensive.

All you need is a domain and $4.95 hosting from hostgator.

If you're new to wordpress, just look on youtube for a video on how to set it up.

What niche is your blog in?

    Definitely on your own.

It's not that you'll necessarily make more money on one sort of hosting than another, it's that you won't get your blog deleted/removed over any issues to do with terms of service.

For example, at wordpress.com, no form of monetization is allowed at all: it's for "hobby bloggers" only. And at Blogger/Blogspot, many Warriors have had their sites deleted without understanding why. It's not one of these things where you can "stick by the terms of service and never have a problem". That's unrealistic. Because the TOS change all the time, and so do the inconsistent ways they're interpreted.

The places to avoid, for hosting blogs/sites, to avoid such problems and risks, which have cost so many Warriors their sites, include wordpress.com, blogger/blogspot, squidoo and hubpages.

There are plenty of "self-hosted" places where you can get free hosting, perfectly safely, and not have these terms of service issues and problems.

Don't let people tell you that "paid hosting" is the only safe/good kind, or that it's necessarily more secure than free hosting - that's not true at all, but some people like to repeat it just because they've seen other people saying it or because they think it "sounds right".

In reality, there's plenty of free hosting that's far better and safer than some paid-for hosting: you just have to do plenty of research and know which ones to use safely.

Personally, among the free hosts, I recommend Weebly (a seriously underrated host), Yola, Blinkweb, Byethost and 000WebHost.

Most blog deletion on Blogger is automated and complaint-driven. The decision is made by a machine, not a human, on the grounds that a certain number of complaints were received within a certain timeframe.

If you're not comfortable with that, Blogger isn't a good place to put your blogs.

      Yes, indeed.

There are actually many such places available.

It pays to be a bit careful, in selecting one.

Two "better than average" ones are Byethost.com and 000WebHost.com.

Byethost is widely reported as being slightly the more reliable of the two (though I think they're both ok), but doesn't have C-Panel, and the downside is that installing Wordpress there is far from starightforward (not that I've ever tried it, myself, you understand - this is all second-hand information, but I do know several people who've used Byethost - both free and paid - as their host, successfully, for many years). Personally, I'd have a look at 000WebHost, if I were you. There are others, too, though.

I'm pretty sure that Weebly is a better, safer, more reliable free host than either of the above ... but they have their own interface/design-package, and you can't host Wordpress blogs there. (I've been using Weebly very successfully, myself, for over 3 years now - admittedly with the paid upgrade, but their free service is fine, too. I'm not a Wordpress user, though).

There's also a hosting company called "Hostica" who offer decent, reliable hosting for $1 per month for one domain (which can be a Wordpress blog), and various other deals at only slightly higher prices.

But be very careful with ultra-cheap hosting, and stay away from companies who aren't well-established (that means many years! Seriously - do not "try out" a cut-price hosting company that doesn't have a long record: this is heavily against the odds, as so many of them disappear!). Always back up your site regularly.

There are some good free hosting providers, and there are also some here on the Warrior Forum that cost like $12/year (usually you can expect to make about $96/year)

Also, while it's true that your main site should be on a domain you own, your entire business doesn't have to be. YouTube, Squidoo, Ezinearticles, etc. can all get lots of traffic.

Just be careful so you dont put a lot of work into them and then have the account closed! This happens if you're posting an article/video thats against their TOS.

Having a self-hosted blog is always better. When it gets popular you will have the freedom to monetize and customize it anyway you want.

If you are really serious to this business, then you should be at least ready to invest a bit for hosting and your domain name.

I usually use blooger.com and wordpress.com as 2 of my mini-sites of my linkwheel for seo purposes.

I think for the OP the point is - sooner or later you have to DO something and put yourself out there.

You've asked about guest blogging and freelance writing and PLR and paid forum posting and now about free blogs.

You are nibbling around the edges. Get a niche and a plan, get a domain and join the crowd. $10 for a domain - you can use free hosting but Hostgator has hosting for $7 a month and you can use Fantastico to launch your blog from there.

If you're going to use blogger at least buy your own domain. That will help you with rankings.

When you use third party, free sites instead of a host and domains, you are at the mercy of the sites that are hosting you. They often delete content they consider low value or spammy. All your work could disappear in a moment.

It's well worth getting a hosting account and buying domains to set up on the hosting account. It's more of a long term solution for your sites.

@momfriend Go to a hosting provider that charges you a monthly fee to allow you to keep your files on their super fast computers that are always on (except when they rarely crash). You could potentially host from your personal PC from home, but your Internet is relatively slow even with your broadband internet, but more importantly if your computer gets turned off, or one of your kids(or you) play video games on it, then your website will go down or be very slow. Therefore, you pay for hosting so that people will always have a fast connection to your files, ie your website is online. The opposite of self hosting is to use wordpress.com (for example) which creates a folder where you can keep your files on their hosting. This gives you a very limited option of hosting because you must follow their rules and if for any reason they don't like you, they an just delete your folder. Not a very smart business model.

If you are going to get started in a business you have to invest. Starting an online business doesn't even compare to a brick a mortar initial investment. (For example my favorite hosting company is icdsoft and they charge less than $80 per year to host your files on their super fast servers.) It is always smarter to self host... but some people rely on quantity of garbage rather than quality of valuable information to make their money, therefore it makes sense for these people to have 100's of these wordpress folders and try to make a buck or two off each one... where as a quality domain can make thousands and even more.
