What do you call yourself....

... when others ask what you do?

Internet Marketer?
Niche Marketer?
Online Guru?
Website Builder?
Internet Sales(wo)man?
Online Entrepreneur?

I'm just curious what you tell others (that have no clue what Internet Marketing is)... just exactly what it is that you do when they ask?

How do they react?

Often times I am not totally sure how to explain my job... more times I just give them the 11,000 foot view, and then sometimes I find myself describing what I do at great lengths only to be presented with a blank look.

Responses have been all over the place (huh?) (hm.) (what is that?) (didn't know you could make money online) (that's not a real job though, right?)

If they ask for further details, I say my current project is marketing online.

Hello Elizabeth. I get that deer in the headlights look too when I say internet marketing. So I say I am an internet marketer. I write content for people who have websites and provide online marketing services.

I make it a point to say something about my business every where I go. The grocery store, the post office, the liquor store : ) -- I have picked up a few clients doing this and I also consider it a learning experience. I hear things like, "Wow, I have been writing a book for a while now but I don't know how to market it."

    Perfect statement.

Then I tell them I would appreciate an opportunity to discuss the way I can help them market their book....

It really depends on who is asking. Most of the time I just say that I'm a marketer. There's no reason to limit myself by putting "internet" in front of it.

I usually say something along the lines of "I'm an Internet Marketer. I help others promote their own businesses, books, and products to people online and also have a few of my own." If they ask for more details, I explain I make websites for small businesses to help them access a wide customer base. I also help people find ways to market books and information products. They usually understand the first half a lot better than the second half.

I assume you have a web site at the bare minimum. So you can say you are a publisher as you are publishing articles or what ever to the web. You could say that you are a marketer or are in advertising. If you are not selling products from your web sites, then you must have some kind of advertising on them for monetizeation.

Or you could just say you own your own business and leave it at that. How much do you want to share with them?

To the people that I know well, I normally say I own an online business. Those that know me see the work I do so I don't get the "She is being tricked to think money can be made online." look others give me. The marketing explanation works better and also makes people think I have a more traditional job... which isn't always important, but in the cases of say, signing up for a service, it is important they see stability.

I remember telling one of my roommates I was starting an online business. He said there was no real way to make money online, especially with no start up money. I remember the day he came in with a bunch of packages for me... my new work computer, printer, and a ps3 for my husband's birthday... he goes "How did you buy that? You have no job?" I looked at him and said "Ya... I own a business! While you were selling TVs at WalMart and playing xbox, I built a business so I can buy myself things like this."

Haha. I get that all the time when I mention similar words.

It's funny how people have no clue that people are spending and earning money all throughout the internet, even from people just viewing something or clicking on something.

The biggest question I end up getting is "Do I spend money when I click on something?!"

I will do some website design as a means to work with a client if need be, so I usually (first) say I do website design and depending on the reaction, I may add that I help local businesses with marketing. I keep my own internet marketing business/websites to myself and never mention them. People (and family and friends that just don't get it) then think I only do work for clients. Keeps it simple.

All that to say, I say "Website Design (& Marketing) for local businesses".

Recently a bunch of my friends were making fun of me for not having a job while we were out at a bar, normal teasing from them since they know what I do. A new guy hanging out with us goes "Seriously though, what do you do?" My response: "Well... they are right, I don't have a job. I sit in front of my computer and watch my PayPal fill up with cash." Of course, I explained a little bit after, but his face was priceless.

When I am in a good mood and a stranger asks me, I simply reply:

      I am a psychiatrist.

The usually reply: Wow that's interesting.

Then I ask: Why do you say that?

then they'll give a reason and I ask: How does that make you feel?

That usually screws them right up.

          I like that.

The old "I'm unemployable" also gets them miffed.

But it just goes to show how ingrained the concept that the only path to success is with an education and a career is in 99% of the population.

Trouble is that job security as we knew it went out the window about 20 years ago.
