How do you keep your PC safe and running as fast as possible?

I am getting sick of buying new laptops every year. I just bought a new one for me and one for my wife and already they are starting to act up and running slower etc.

I run a paid subscription through Mcafee and am wondering if there is anything else I can do to protect my pc better and if there is anything I can do to take care of the current issues which slows it down?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

It's Mcafee that's slowing your computer down. 100%.

    Get something lightweight like Malwarebytes.

Keep your computer updated with the latest updates from Microsoft. Uninstall EVERY application you don't use.

I have no idea what people do on their computers to "make them slow". Who buys a new laptop every year? I wish I had the money to do that.

I just use Microsoft Security Essentials on my Windows 7 PC. Almost a year now with no problems.

lolo at the above post... so true.

I have switched to Avast anti virus. Absolute top notch security.

Have text chat open can slow you down.

    Try more RAM.

My wife has the same problem. Her laptop was slow as a snail.

So I cleaned off all her crap and reinstalled Win7 and guess what? Good as new.

I also use a clean up software that regularly deletes history files, recycle, temp files etc.

As stated, why buy a new laptop every year? I am now using my wofe's Dell and she has my old HP with XP. Cleaned it up for her and it runs slick.

Don't download any apps that you don't need.

And if you must... keep one laptop for business only with no internet connection.

I run the FREEavg on my machine and the Win7 built in Firewall.

Never had a problem. I am a power user and know when to back down from a download.

McAfee has always been terrible in my opinion and I think that may be your problem. Instead of buying a new computer just back up all of your important files and re-install windows.

I keep my computer safe by having my doberman guard it.

When I want to keep the computer running, I just put steak inside the computer and tell the doberman to get the steak.

If you have the money, which I am sure you probably do, get as much RAM as possible. My computer has 9 GB of RAM and is expandable to 25 GB of RAM, which I have not done, but may, which would make it much, much faster, I believe. I use 3 or 4 Adobe products at one time, which can be draining on any computer, even a MAC. I know because I have used MAC many times. I like them and don't, just depends.

My processor is a quad core processor which really helps, it's the Asus i7....

I also have a 1.5 tb standalone harddrive which I use to keep all my files on. It's not part of the computer system, it connects to it via a usb, so I can access it whenever, but the files on it, do not slow down my computer. I have short cuts on my desk top, that go to the external harddrive, so that saves me lots of space for sure.

I have malwarebytes, but I don't run it in background. Only once in a while I scan my computer, besides, I don't download anything weird, so I have nothing to worry. I only use the internet to visit forums like this forum, less likely to contain viruses.

Also, I frequently clean my computer with Ccleaner. If you want to download it, download here: CCleaner - Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download
It's a freeware that cleans junk files.

Cleaning your computer frequently will result in better performance.

Most computers slow down over time as we install programs, move files around, download pictures, videos, etc., but a lot of the speed can be retained by simply fixing the registry issues - I use Registry Easy.

If you have a lot of video, audio, or pictures on your pc, either get a bigger hard drive or delete old files you no longer need. And check what programs are installed, and uninstall any you don't need - when you download software, there are often extra downloads attached that you never use, and these take up space and slow your pc down. Just uninstall them.

It isn't normal to have these problems. Don't buy cheap notebook every year, it's better to buy a great one and you'll have it for years !
Buy one with a fast processor. ( >2GB RAM)
I have an acer aspire laptop ( 4g ram ) and I'm really happy with it. For my safe, I used McAfee , now I use Microsoft Security Essentials without problems.

Take a look at Amazon and try to buy laptops from Brands ( Asus, Acer , Toshiba etc )

LOL. You don't even know the OP's notebook. How come you can draw a conclusion his notebook is cheap?

There are a lot of reasons why notebook becomes slow, not just because it doesn't have enough RAM.

Check out a bit of software called deepfreeze.

Basically, you have a partition or hard drive that is "unfrozen", and the rest of your pc -- your software, your windows, etc -- is all frozen. No matter what you do, when you restart your pc, it will have reset to default, and be working nice and fast.

Even the regisistry resets -- so you pc NEVER gets any slower than the day you "freeze" your pc.

I gave up McAfee. It missed a lot of malware and McAfee slowed my computer down to a crawl. I use Prevx now. It gets a lot of the malware/spyware, plus viruses and trojans.

Mcafee is bloatware and for that matter so is Norton. Malwarebytes is good The best I've ever found is TrendMicro Thier antivirus and antiMalware is very agressive It also has a very small footprint on your system. I have been in the systems and network support field for about 10 years I've dealt with this stuff daily for many years, believe me Trend Micro is the best you'll find In fact Microsoft used them for their Hotmail mail servers for years although I think MS is making a play for the antivirus market withier Security Essentials product. I know for years Hotmail displayed Trend micro's logo at the bottom of their webpage

I'm running Windows Server 2008 on this machine and Haven't run any antivirus software for at least couple of years. Antivirus software for any server OS is very expensive Once or twice when I though I might have picked up something I've run Malwarebytes to scan the system If it finds something I Google it and then clean it. The reason most peoples machine run slow is because they let the machine pick up crap from the internet. Basic rule of thumb. The answer to any thing that pops up on your machine is "no" something else you can do is make sure nothing is running in the background. If your machine is running microsoft defender you can go in and remove any startup programs. You'd be surprised how many of these thing can get on your machine. Basically whenever your machines boots it fires ofF all these programs that run in the background an example Would be something like quicktime. Another source for these startup programs is printers. Virtually every printer on the market comes with an install cd. This cd has the printer drivers and the printer software and almost always has some sort of update software. This update software runs in the background it uses your network connection to try to talk to it's (the manufacturers) server to check for updates. If it is unable to get a connection to the server it ties up your network connection while it tries to talk to its server i always remove these updater programs. They tie up resources , CPU and RAM and your network connection. These are just some of the possible and likely causes of things that can bleed off system resources and slow down your machine. Of course viruses and malware i.e. adware will o this also jus not malware behaves a lot like these printer updater softwares, Hijacking system resources.

ANother free utility you can get is Hijackthis. Just Google it. It is made by TrendMicro It will scan your system for anything that doesn't belong there. it is an excellent tool for virus identification and removal. That being said you will need to spend some time learning how to us it, do some Googling. The thing that makes it so great is that nothing can hide from it.

Agree with what everyone is saying about McAfee being a resource hog. I've had great experiences with AVG as well as Avira and Avast, and they're all free and pretty light weight.
What kind of maintenance do you do? The previously mentioned Ccleaner is great (and free), it has a registry cleaner included. At the very least you should be doing disk cleanup and defrag once a week, and running antivirus and malware scans once a day. I like Spybot for malware detection.

I have only two programs installed on my PC: Rift and Trillian. If it's running too slowly, I quit Trillian, but normally, it's running fast enough. It's an Alienware.

For work, I use an iMac, and I experience no speed problems. I have no anti-virus programs or anything running, only the 20+ programs, I'm constantly using (and my husband keeps telling me I should close those programs, but I DO use them regulargly) ;-)

I also use the free AVG antivirus. It really slows the laptop down though, that's the only issue - I am pretty sure this happens with most antivirus programs, even more so with Norton I have heard.

Make sure that you have at least 10% of the total hard drive space free on the drive that contains the operating system installation, you are using antivirus software and that you defragment your hard drives frequently.

Forget McAfee and Norton - both are very cumbersome.

Free AVG or any of those mentioned above are preferable.

      I regularly clean the junk.

As mentioned above CCleaner is a good, free, and fast running option.

Evidence Eliminator is a heavy weight, paid option. It takes longer to run but that itself suggests it is doing something worthwhile.

Used along with some kind of registry cleaner these will keep the machine clutter free and running faster.
