5 Tips for Using Twitter

I just finished writing my PLR pack on Twitter and learned a lot about Twitter marketing and thought I'd share a few tips with everyone. Twitter is such a huge and widely used platform, more and more people want to use it, but many fail because they don't use it correctly.

1. For best results, you need to treat your Twitter followers like you would your list. Don't just sell, sell, sell. Give too. Give freebies, link to informational blog entries, then sell every once and a while.

2. Don't just blindly follow and hope for follow backs. Find people in your niche, follow them, then direct message them inviting them to follow you back.

3. Tweet, re-tweet, and direct message. Twitter is a community. Be active for best results. Take time to tweet. Re-tweet interesting tweets you see. (One of the reasons you should follow people in your niche. Answer direct messages and let people know you appreciate them.

4. Fill out your profile and add a background. People on Twitter don't want to follow a salesperson, they want to follow a person. Someone that is real and will share interesting or funny things with them. They want to follow people that will make them think or laugh.

5. Don't just use automated software. Sure, planning out tweets with a software is fine, it will help maintain consistency, but take some time to manually get in there and nurture your relationship with your followers.

Remember, people go to Twitter to relax, stay connected, and have fun. Keep that in mind when you are using Twitter for marketing, it takes a special touch to make sure people don't feel like you are just there to sell to them.

Any other tips for using Twitter as part of your marketing plan?

I use Twitter mostly for brand building.

It's a great way of keeping in touch with your potential buyers and giving you some credibility - assuming you post relevant content.

A really good tip is to link your facebook page to your twitter page.

All of my tweets are automatically shown on my facebook page so i only need to create this info once and it gets shown to more people...

Make sure you have an interesting background that reflects what you or your product does or is in some way eye catching.

You can see my page here

      Mike Auton (@autonmike) on Twitter

my tweets are automatically shown here

      Mike Auton | Facebook

it allows people to follow me wherever they like...

Twitter is a very powerful tool. make sure you update frequently. People like to hear from you. You can post URL links of sites you think are interesting, sayings or quotes that mean something or just say "Hi I'm here and this is what I'm doing". Don't go telling everybody about what your selling or try to get them to buy something. This is a place to build your credibility, and respect from others. Be honest, talk to them like you would anybody else.

      Here's an 'anti-tip'...

Scraping and autoposting the feed from a famous quotes blog between sales promos is not posting great content and participating.

I just killed my first Twitter account and I'm starting over. On my old one, I started how using the 'follow everybody unless they don't follow back' method, and it reminded me of the 140 character version of the old Usenet newsgroups right before they imploded from the spam load...

These are great tips and something I also encourage. I'm a huge fan of Twitter and get amazing results from it.

I'm always asked how I have so many followers (52,000+) so I recently wrote a blog post on how to get more followers. Some of you may find it useful.

    A few more tips:

    6. Videos and photos work wonders. They grab attention. Yet another reason to make your own Youtube videos so you can do a mix between your own videos and other interesting videos!

    7. Don't just follow random people... follow interesting people in your niche. Follow back people that follow you from time to time. You don't want your feed to be so cluttered you can't see the people in your niche or the people following you because you want to be able to reply to their tweets and engage in conversation. This method gets you much better results than mass following and unfollowing people that don't follow you.

    8. People love stories. For instance, if you are in the get your ex back niche, link to stories about people getting their lovers back. This is inspiring to your followers.

    9. Funny jokes and quotes get retweeted often, as do links to interesting or funny webpages or blog entries. Remember, you want EVERY tweet to make them think or smile!

    10. Give freebies from time to time. Maybe a short book or gift every once and a while. Holding contests is also great in getting people involved and watching for your tweets as well. It doesn't have to be anything big... I had a contest recently where I asked people to tweet a link to their favorite of my blog posts and everyone who did would be entered in a drawing for a $10 amazon gift card. That $10 got me over 100 new followers and tons of traffic and email opt-ins.

I don't think they are all bad, but if used excessively they can really hurt you.

For instance, for my main ClickBank site I have a Twitter account where it is set to automatically tweet twice a night. Once is a link to an informational blog entry and the other is a link to a video. This actually adds consistency. Just be sure to go back and check Twitter and respond to messages and thank people for re-tweets. This way there is a tweet everyday which I think is important. Tweeting everyday around the same time adds a level of consistency that is really good for Twitter.

Like mentioned above, once your fan page is set up you can have your tweets also posted to FB. This means you can easily update both and then spend a little time on each replying to messages.

Twitter is just subscribed spam! (A lot like many peoples lists).
Let's face it regardless of how YOU use Twitter, you are watching line after line of spam scrolling by and your watching it too!

it's like watching T.V adverts without with the programs interrupting them.

I love Twitter by the way but I use it as a tool not as a social medium to keep in contact with friends.

    That's my opinion anyway

    Best regards

If you follow real people that aren't d-bag spammers, you won't have to watch spam spew down your feed. It's on YOU to decide who you want to follow and who you don't want to follow.

If you follow everyone back or use mass follow/unfollow techniques, you will see spam and most of your feed will be filled with garbage.

It's very effective when used as a social medium to connect with friends and people in your niche, prospects, customers, etc.

The power of Twitter is in the conversations.

P.S. Use lists to prioritize people that you don't want miss content from.

I have a personal Twitter set up just following friends and family and I actually enjoy it as a social medium. It makes it really easy to keep up on what is going on with my little sisters and my brother. It only becomes spam when you start following tons of people that are going to spam you.

Look for twitter celebrities, try to make them mention(@reply) you, you will get mass attention from their followers. One guy recently was mentioned in a Britney's tweet.
But he was not a marketer....
There are some retweeting services on fiverr (and other places). When you get 100+ retweets your tweet can get to the top, but it can't contain links.

To be honest i have always stayed away from using twitter seriously. I guess i will have to have a proper look into it at some point but it seems like a lot of people send a good amount of time on there and often get poor results back.

The biggest problem is most people don't take the time to get GOOD followers. They use things like Fiverr gigs and Twiends to get followers and end up with a bunch of bot or useless followers. That and they don't understand how to tweet to actually get clicks.

Twitter is really great if you have a blog because if you are trying to gain income from a blog, the number one way is by getting traffic. Personally I get about 30% of my traffic from Twitter. People on there are very responsive if you're not just out there selling selling selling.

People on Twitter like information and interesting stuff, so give them that!

Also, here's my tip: follow the followers of someone who's really big in your industry/niche. About 20-25% of people follow back and you'll then get followers that are interested in your topic.

If I'm going through Twitter I tend to share videos and blog entries for best results. I have really good luck linking to videos and getting clicks provided I also link to text from time to time. (I tried only linking to video and started getting more unfollows.)
