Outranking Big Brands With The Google Update?

Hi Everyone

Since Oct 14th, the big brands seem to be ranking higher now (as I have seen people mention)

Has anyone found it is much harder to outrank them now. In the UK we have Amazon, Comet, Dixons etc

I have started on 3 sites (since becoming very motivated) but one is for an appliance but not sure if I am wasting my efforts and should go for something that does not include a big brand?

My main site which was not effected is not found on a big brand and still ranks fine

Many Thanks

Rob

    Hi Rob

Good to see another Brit here. Your question isn't very clear to me. Give us some more detail so that we can help you out.

But remember that search engine position is not an exact science.

      Hi Ken

Sorry, I was thinking out loud as I wrote it down so sorry for the confusion

What I meant was, now the big brands seem to have outranked many people, do you see it worth working on when it could take longer. Whereas, working on a site that does not involve the big brands would be a better way to spend your time building

    Hi Rob,

If you do your keyword research correctly, you will be able to find keyword terms that are worth going after. It depends on your knowledge of SEO (if you're doing the right things), but also consistency and patience. Sometimes the terms worth going after can take several months or more of consistent effort to crack.

I am confident the niche I chose can work but due to the Oct 14th update, I thought I would check incase I am wasting my time

Will give it a good go then...

      Cheers

I know exactly what you mean about some of the big brands and UK rankings, it's fairly easy to get just below them for the right keywords but then overtaking them often requires a lot more work.

You might find it better to focus on some less brand specific keywords but a lot depends on the actual keywords being targeted by the company with huge resources and budget.

lol You said it so much clearer than I did Neil, Thanks

Yup its the overtaking then find amazon and Currys outranks you the next day...pain in the bum when you know your site is more optimised but Google says no lol

OK I see what you mean Rob.

I find it very hard to beat the big brands. They have full time employees making sure they are top of the pile.
If I can make page one then I've done a decent job.
If I make top three I have done something clever. The problem is working out how I did it.

            Many many Thanks everyone

That pretty much answers my question and hunches

I will stick to the other two sites that do not involve big brands then, very similar to my main site

            Excellent

            Thankyou

How diffficult is it to beat big brands after Oct 14? Don't know because I didn't work on a new product since then (busy consolidating my existing ones).

But yes in general I have seen amazing climbs for rankings from big brands in the niches that I am in, including Amazon. Are they unbeatable? No way - I still beat them. But note that they are a lot closer to me than earlier with still eqaully few (and whatever quality as earlier) backlinks.

So yes, my impression is that the Trust Rank is playing more and more role with days moving by. Domain age seems to help also.

So that probably answers your question (in my own way).

I think that's going to be far more difficult going forward.

Google is using human reviewers to perform queries and report back what their intent on the search is, what the vital searches are, and what the characteristics of a quality site are for this term. Then the engineers are baking that into the algorithm.

So the days of ranking a content site for "Iphone Case" (or even an affiliate site) are likely over. If they aren't, it's just a lot harder.
