My site is down!!! I feel so helpless...

Hi Warriors,

I use Host Gator and have been pretty happy with them. But then, I've never had a problem, either.

However, both of my sites are currently down! I'm FINALLY moving into the pre-launch phase of my site and OF COURSE it would happen now! I am LIVID!

I also feel very helpless.

I had someone else design/install my sites and they've been working beautifully until now. In fact, I was just on both sites this morning and everything was fine. The only thing that alerted me to the fact that there was a problem tonight was that I went into to finish and send my newsletter through AWeber. Since all of the graphics are just links to graphics on my site, they wouldn't load, which prompted me to look at my sites.

I've asked Host Gator to restore my sites from their backups and have authorized the $15 charge to do so.

I have one main domain. However, the account is divided into two separate sites/sub-domains. It's ALL down.

I've spoken with their support by phone and the gentleman informed me that one of the issues is that the wp-config file appears to be missing. (The gentleman was very kind and courteous. Thank goodness for phone support! It's for PRECISELY times like these that I chose a hosting company with 24/7 phone support. I've dealt with other companies who only had e-mail support. But that's NOT acceptable in an emergency situation like this one.)

I was on my sites this morning and everything was just fine. (I was logged into the admin panel through Wordpress (NOT my cPanel) this morning, but nothing else.) I haven't been messing with the files on my sites at all, nor have I authorized anyone else to do so. These sites have been up for a year with no problems whatsoever.

Hopefully my sites will be back up and running shortly. But I'm EXTREMELY concerned. I can work around a lot of things, but if my sites are down, I am OUT OF BUSINESS. And I'm just launching my companies! (Murphy's law, don'tcha know!)

But how do I find out what happened???? Has someone hacked my account? How can I prevent this from happening again???

I've outsourced my site design/installation/techie issues to others. It's not my forte. But in times like these, it leaves me feeling helpless.

Maybe taking a good, thorough WordPress class (basic design and configuration) is a good idea for times like these.

Any suggestions? Also, does anyone have any experience with Host Gator during times like these? I'm crossing my fingers that my sites are restored with no trouble.

Fortunately, I had my site backed up, and Host Gator also does their own backups. So I'm covered (I think). Because I paid someone else to do my backups, I'm not sure how thorough it was. (HostGator's backup is more recent, so we're using their backup.)

It's my understanding that with Wordpress, you have to backup the theme AND the database, that they're two separate things. For future reference, how do *I* back up my sites and feel secure the ENTIRE site is backed up completely?

I'm VERY upset right now and won't feel any better until my sites are completely back up and online again (12-24 hours).

If it is indeed that your wp-config file is missing, it is a very simple solution. Upload the wp-config file. If you don't have a backup, just download the same version of Wordpress that you are running and update the wp-config file with your database information and upload it to the root directory.

Yes, I AM "lucky" that it happened now and not when I'd made a huge launch announcement. (I'm doing a "soft" launch right now to get some traction be moving into a full-on big launch.)

Good point. Trouble is, my site runs a Woo theme and my designer is the one who bought it. So I can't re-download it. She left me high and dry last year towards the end of the project and we didn't part on good terms.

Here's what Host Gator just told me:

"We apologize but the site (MainDomain.com) appears to be missing its wp-config.php file which is needed for the site to function and we unfortunately do not have a backup of the file. If you have one you could upload it or we may be able to use a default one and add the site's database information to it. The other sites on the account appear to load but slowly at this time. Please contact us anytime if you have any questions."

Trouble is, the account was divided into two sub-domains and two separate sites from the beginning. So I'm not so sure that the main domain even HAD it's own wp-config.php file. I've sent them a link to a backup a guy from Fiverr made for me at the end of Sept. It's all I have.

Trouble is, my two sites (sub-domains, I guess) aren't just loading slowly. They're not loading at all!

I REALLY want to know what caused this and how I can prevent it. But I have NO idea what questions to even ask or how to find out. Arrggh!

It's been fine for a YEAR and it was fine this morning! Why all this trouble all of a sudden??? It's so frustrating!

Every wordpress site has it's own wp-config file, so if you have more than one wordpress site installed, you have more than one wp-config file.

The wp-config file is not a theme file. It is a wordpress file that needs your database information to run the site. PM me with your hostgator cpanel login info and I'll see if I can fix it for you. I'll need the cpanel url, user name and password.

My sites are back up! Whew!

Because I hadn't launched yet, I hadn't done much with the site for the last several months and so there weren't many blog posts or other updates (fortunately for me). Everything seems to be in order.

But it really worries me. I STILL have NO idea what caused the problem in the first place or how to prevent it from happening again.

          Any ideas?

            Michelle,

Glad you're back up. Make sure you change your passwords so your former designer doesn't get back in.

(My sister lives in Jupiter and I lived in Palm Beach Gardens earlier this year. You been getting some rain haven't you? )

            All the best,

If you're in Palm Beach Gardens, then I'm probably just 15-20 minutes from wherever you are. Yes, we've been getting rain. It's been pretty gray for most of the last 2-3 weeks. But then, you already know that.

I'd already changed my passwords after my split from my designer, so no worries there.

As for the WordPress config file, I don't really think it's an issue. Host Gator said there was no config file on the main domain, but I doubt there was one there in the first place since the main domain was divided into two separate sites and sub-domains from the beginning.

I don't think that was the issue at all. It's just confused the issue further. The config files DO appear in each sub-domain site, as they should.

Host Gator mentioned that it took them a little bit of extra time to get it back up because the server was under a "mild attack" tonight. An attack is mild??? I think the attack or whatever it was is what caused the problem in the first place. Grrr!

But my sites are back up and I've spent a while tonight re-doing the work I'd done in the last week or so. (Sigh...) But it all seems good now. (Whew!)

A few things come to mind:

    - I agree with Suzanne, you should be able to upload aand update a new config file

    - It shouldn't take 12 to 24 hours to get back up

    - Shared servers suck when you're expecting lots of traffic. Be glad it happen now and not when the order button was live. Had you gotten a surge of traffic, those same helpful techs will be the ones telling you that they have to shut you down because your traffic load is affecting the other sites on the server. Look into getting a dedicated server.

    - Most control panels allow you to back up all your files and databases by pressing a button. On my dedicated server, I have a backup automatically scheduled every day for some of my user generated content site.

    - Have the host check to see if you've been hacked and if they're any new files added to the site that you don't recognize.

    - Sites go down all the time, do what you can do to get it back up fast and don't let it stress you.
