What is the best practice to create a sitemap for your site (wordpress)?

1. When should it be created?
2. When should it be modified?
3. How should it be created? (several ways exist but which is the best way)

manual or automated

Wordpress Plugin = "Google XML Sitemaps". This is all you'll need, it auto-generates the sitemap, lets you put priority on certain pages, pings Bing & Google, and creates the XML file.

I used Google XML sitemaps because I just read it to be very useful but I only know today what that plugin can do and I am glad i am using it.

Yep, probably the best option to use a plugin for WordPress. It can be tricky to manually add to the template. Thanks for the suggestion on Google XML Sitemaps plugin as well. Very useful.

For WordPress, a plugin will often be the fastest solution since it has direct access to the database. But if you need sitemap types not supported by the plugin (maybe image sitemaps and video sitemaps) you can also look into tools like A1 Sitemap Generator. (Combine its "WordPress" preset with e.g. the "image sitemap" preset before crawling website and building e.g. the image sitemap)

    Hey James,

Yer you only need to use the Google XML Sitemap.

It will do everything for you. You then link to it in
your footer and then submit the URL to Google
    webmaster and you're all done!
