Who is making a full time living online?

Hi guys!

I was wondering how many of you are really making a full time living online?
(interernet and affiate marketing)

When I say full time, I know that can vary depending on how much money you need to survive, so in my case I am thinking between 3,000 and 4,000 per month.

I am sitting in a hotel room as I write this (traveling for business) and I have just had enough of my job. I LOVE internet marketing, and have trying to do it half way on the side, but never seem to get anywhere. This is because of work and family comitments. I fall into the realm of buying all the products reading and never executing. So I am thinking.... I have 6 to 12 months of living costs saved up....... It is time to dedicate full time to this! What are your guys opinions on the best way to get to 4K a month in 12 months..... or is it realistic?

thanks in advance!
Dan

  • Hi,

I make enough to pay the bills, but it is not from IM. (A very tiny bit).

If you 'knew' what you needed to do, I'd say it would be realistic within 1-2 months (i.e., preparation), if not sooner.

But I'd say there are two main camps. Being an affiliate, and being a product creator.

    For 4k a month, I'd suggest:
    a) Pick a topic you love and know a lot about, not related to IM. (Since technically speaking you just said you don't know how to make money onlien, so if you start selling products telling other people how to do so, that would be rather lame - although also ironically, there are people who do precisely that and it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy).
    a) Product wise: most popular products are .pdf files & video courses, although if you have software background that is good as well.
    c) Make something value. Figure out how you can 'give' much more value than what you are asking for. I.e., if you want to "make" $4k/month -- figure out how you can make 'x' number of people's lives better by say $12k/month. (I.e. you are 'saving' them $12k, making them $12k, making them happier, safer, smarter, more atractive, etc, etc).

Also, have patience, and realize it is not going to happen overnight. It technically 'will' happen overnight, that is -- if you know exactly what needs to be done -- but chances are you don't, and it will be a lot of experimentation, testing, revising, etc, and so forth until you figure out what works for 'you'. (I.e., I 'know' how I could literally create something today, and start making $$$ from it the same day, but that is based on years of experience of actually 'doing', plus leveraging existing systems I have in place).

But one thing that is REALLY important that you need to realize -- it is not about "getting money". It is about "giving value", and the more you "give" the more you get back.

    Anyways, hope that helps.

    John

John! Thanks so much for your response! I do fully agree with you.... You mentioned that very little came from IM..... do you mind letting me know what you are doing? Do you use mastermind groups? (leveraging networks of people?)

I have set myself up to not need to drtaw money for about 12 months, so I would hope I can do SOMETHING in that time.

      Great to meet you.

I have been full time since 2008, but I was forced into this when the economy made some changes in my life. So it was do or die for me, and let me say money in IM does not come in fast. I would not even bank on six months...

What I would suggest is a couple of things...first stop buying things and reading things...and begin thinking through a business model. Not something that sounds sexy or cool or what someone else is making a killing with, but something that DAN can do for a long time.

Back in the day before internet, I grew a brick and mortar business to about 150 employees, there was no way I could have done that without a business plan...

In 2008 when the economy tanked and I had to make a move, I had to formulate another business plan to succeed online.

It included what can I do right now to get paid in seven days...I went from making really good money to not having a job...so for me it was sell door to door...once I had money coming in...i asked the same thing with making money online...

how do I make money in seven days online...I started making money by the third day...so I learned how to replace my door to door selling with online income...

then I asked how do I duplicate what is working for me? Once I duplicated it I then asked How do I grow this and automate what I am doing...and then I did...

What you have to be cautious of is what so many people do and get caught up in...and that is the WSO crack addict that buys and buys and buys but never applies...

You know why Guru's will give you their tips and tricks...because they know 99.9% of the people might try it for a week, but will abandon it. I know that their are some who really do want to see you succeed...i get it...but truth be known there is very little chance that a superstar will rise and take over any method or niche...plus I think we sometimes forget how large the internet truly is...there is room for everyone...

You know why most people fail at this...because they dont have a plan...every single plan presented has the potential to make you millions...if you apply it, and work it.

But this is what it is like...

What if home depot came on the scene with all the enthusiasm and energy to be a GREAT do it yourself center, which they did...and now everyone knows where to go when they need a hammer. So you go and buy a hammer and see how put together they are...and say wow...I also need some nails...and you buy them...and on your way out you see they have something else you need for that project...

So when payday comes around you go back to that store, and all of sudden home depot is now an automotive store...and the only thing you can do is get your oil changed and get some tires? OK...maybe you go in and spend some money...

But then your tire blows out and you say...hey home depot down the way has tires let me go there...and when you arrive...Home Depot is the new and improved donut shop...HOLY COW...is home depot going to survive the next few months...NO

Thats what a large majority of internet marketers do...they come on strong, believe they will be the next thing...and then bam...it doesn't work as fast as thought, or it takes more time than the guru told them...and then they move from FB dreams, to twitter dreams, to Article marketing dreams, to ad swap dreams, to buy traffic dreams, to SEO dreams, to offline client dreams, to backlinking dreams, to this dream to that dream...and then they buy, buy, buy, and never apply...this road is littered with broken big dreams and money wasted...

And I say this as someone who does it full time...I'm not being negative, just trying to be truthful...and I am not downplaying IM...because I love it and do it everyday of my life...I live it, breath it, and promote it, teach it, and give away a whole bunch of stuff I should be selling...stuff that costs me money...

So I am not discouraging you in anyway...I am encouraging you to go for it...live it...and dream it...but I am saying...start the right way...

So, what I would suggest to you is...
    • Stay at your job
    • Stop buying
    • Start planning~get your business plan~a solid one~One that makes money
    • Start applying
    • Start tweaking
    • Once you are making 3-4k a month...start making the switch...

You can do this part time...you can make a lot of money part time...and you have an advantage of figuring out what actually works for you...

once you find that one thing that works for you...
    • duplicate it...
    • and duplicate it on a grand scale...
    • once you have it duplicated at a grand scale...
    • then automate it...

And let me say this...dream larger than 3-4k a month...because you would be amazed at how many people make that in a day...yes from IM

Great post! That's what I find as the common factor about people
who make it quickly online--they came online with business sense.
They came with the attitude to make a business and knew that
      they needed a plan.

Also the element of desperation helps as well.

I started in 2001 seriously after dabbling for a couple years
with MLM and other stuff. When I did it was also do or die.
I had 4 children (now 5) to feed and I couldn't afford to
      fail.

I worked long hours. I mean, my wife was missing me even
though I was at home. I was glued to the computer trying
to learn as much as I could.

Even though I didn't have the business background like you
did (so I made the common rookie mistake of not staying
with a strategy long enough before it came through), I
finally got that pounded into me by my mentor.

When I stuck with the system the system worked. But
it takes hard work and that's not sexy. And this is the
same reason why so many people fail it's because they
forget that you'll reap what you sow--and they want
      to reap without sowing.

There's only one way to make money--work! It's either
other people's work or your own but it's work--that
      dreaded four letter word.

It's so easy to lose focus because there are so many
'shiny things' to get your attention. Distraction is a
KILLER to any newbie. But if you commit the time and
effort to any area you choose you can make it.

I've been making full-time income since late 2001. Wow
11 years! The 'easiest' money I made was from Adsense
and affiliate marketing but for the rest I busted my butt
      to earn every penny.

Thanks for your response... that is giving me sopmething to think about...... I agree.. stop buy, start planning.... The focus part is why I am thinking of leaving my job..... your whole.. how do I make money in the next 3 days (door to door) This is why I have saved enough money to live for the next 12 months..... Ya see..... kids are on the way in the next couple years..... so for me.... this is kinda the time.... I know I am just excited, and I am going to need a cool down period..... but as I type this I am in a hotel room about to head to a meeting..... My current job is so demanding that when I am home, I need ot spend time with my family. That is not a excuse... really its not. (we can get into that offline if you really want)

Anyway! Awesome comments man..... I am taking them to heart.... I need to plan and focus.... and find out what can make me money in the next week..... Mind me asking how much people are making on a month to month basis? not what CAN be done..... but what YOU guys are doing?

      Thanks!

Not much, but enough to live off.

If you REALLY want this, you will do whatever it takes to make it happen. Like you, I was in a job that I disliked, and wanted out desperately.

3 years ago, Id never heard of Internet Marketing - now I make a full time living out of it.

As for me, Ive told this story plenty of times here....but basically I went about eliminating any NON NECESSITY from my life that was an expense.

Put simply, in the end, after I'd sold almost everything, I had a computer, a bed, a crappy car, and an internet connection.

The rest was hard work and lots of late nights.

A word of warning....be careful what you wish for.

        1. Working from home (internet marketing) is a lonely business, especially if you're on your own

        2. Dont expect to quit your job anytime soon. Theres A LOT to learn.

        3. Expect to make a LOT of mistakes.

        Good luck.

I look at it exactly the other way round.

I think the flexibility and ability to change the products quickly and easily, with no development or customer service issues, are precisely what gives marketing other people's products the security to be long term.

I like the potential (and the reality) of building a genuine, asset-based business producing increasing residual income from work already done, without its long-term income, security or stability being dependent on the continued success of any specific, individual product(s) at all. Complete product flexibility suits me much better.

Not to mention freedom from product development, most legal/regulatory issues, customer support, order-processing and so many of the other administrative situations with which vendors have to deal every day of the week.

I'm happy just to promote them for commissions of 60% - 75%, while building up my websites and lists, which are very valuable (and marketable) long-term assets anyway.

There is a reason that the best marketers always then build their own product. Because it is long term money. Promoting other people's products is good and dandy, but if you want to really, really grow, you have to develop your own products or technology that promotes products.

Just speaking from almost 15 years of experience and building many companies in the industry.

        Hi,

        Excellent strategy.

What if we can do both?

Earn 20% net from our own products and 80% passive income as affiliate.

Best of both worlds, don't you think?

I have been full-time for three years and five days. I actually did not even remember my anniversary passed until I seen this post.

I thought man, I forgot to celebrate my "freedom anniversary"

I really cannot believe I forgot about that. Crazy stuff.

But, it is amazing to work from the comfort of your own home.

After not working for anyone else for the past three years. I do not think I would ever be able to get a "real" job.

I will always be an entrepreneur from here on out.

All I can really say ToadFire, is to take Pace's comments into consideration. Owning a product is extremely important when it comes to long term income in your situation. No, you may not have to worry about all the legal issues etc if you promote other peoples products as an affiliate, but when you think about it, those who own their own products, the Advertisers basically, are the ones making all the big money.

I don't make a full time living online yet, but once I get my project ramped up, I will be. From there, I plan to branch off into other ventures like becoming an advertiser as opposed to an affiliate. Then I want to get into the mobile advertiser field..but that's a year or two down the road...

      Thanks Dwayne

To give you an idea. If you are an affiliate making $500 a month, imagine the cpa networks who have 100 affiliates doing that? Now imagine the company that has 500 affiliates promoting their own product(s)... that have reoccurring subscriptions, customers.

Here's another thought: Groupon for example just went public, all the owners are extremely rich. Where did all the customers come from? CPA Marketing...

I'm full time for over 4 years, currently I'm doing affiliate marketing and SEO consultancy, combined this is more then I could ever make in offline job. Not to mention freedom to work my own hours or the choice to work with people I want to work with.

I guess the trick is, at least it was for me - focus, chose one thing and stick with it. Do not jump from one thing to another every few weeks when some new "magical" WSO comes out.

Also realize you can't do all the stuff yourself - outsource all you can.

Hope it helps and NEVER, EVER give up!

Been full time for 7 years, did it for 2 years before that, I've sold everything from cigarettes ( Thanx Obama for putting an end to that ) to adult paysite memberships. I love what I do, I look forward to the day when I get up in the morning. I do other things for fun, like building websites, I'm doing one for my mechanic right now and his wife next week. Using a flash template thats XML driven, should be fun! I get great rates on repairs on my cars now, I think I need to sell a couple of them.

Best thing was telling my old boss Good Bye, then seeing him a couple years later making more money than he was

I make my living online full time, as well. The vast majority comes from wordpress design services I do for others (primarily on the Thesis theme), and then a little scratch comes from Clickbank and AdSense. Now I'm trying to move forward into Product Creation and kind of hit that next level.

I know everyone says it, and it probably gets a little old to hear, but it is truly all about "Taking Action." Put it out there, see what sticks to the wall, and just keep going. It's okay to start with that molehill as long as you have a plan, a vision, and the perseverance to make it into a mountain someday! Best of luck

The day I quite my regular job and dedicated my time to IM was the best day of my life.

I say go for it, quite your job and do IM. By doing it this way you won't have your job to fall back on so you will be forced to take IM much more seriously. Sometimes you have to take big risks for big rewards. When I quit my job I only had enough money saved up for 1 month of living expenses and that was a huge motivator for me and what ultimately lead to my success.

    1. It will take a minimum MONTHS to see any return on your effort -- but expect it to be a year or two before you have a strong monthly stream of income
    so don't quit your job
    2. If you start wasting alot of money on guru programs and fall for all the false promises that they "sell" you will take even longer to make enough to leave your job

it can be done, it takes hours and hours and hours of work. It is a JOB it is WORK

    there are no easy answers.

Your best bet is learn, read and consume alot of FREE information here and on the web. there is NO reason to buy anything about internet marketing

start googling, start reading, start listening to podcasts

the most you should really spend is 10 dollars to buy a URL and 7 dollars a month to host your site.

I do it full time. Actually part time, because I dont bust my butt in front of a computer anymore like when I first git started.

Technically it took me 5 years because I was in the same trap of buying stuff, being busy and not making time to FOCUS.

I was also a habitual biz opp hopper. Most of us have been there though lol. After losing jobs and being FORCED to make it work, I can finally say this is what I do for a living. Fun part is explaining to people what you do.

I stopped. Now I just say im an internet marketer, I sell stuff online and make a bunch of money doing it.

Oh the income? Clickbank with SEO and also PPC. And also consulting for small businesses. Clients have paid me up to $1000 to speak on the phone for 2 hours. That's like Christmas LOL!

And with clickbank, It doesn't take much once you have your system in place and high converting offers with good payouts.

Also growing another income strem with my own brand. That's where the total freedom comes from. Clickbank headquarters may meltdown tomorrow so I need other sources. YOUR OWN brand is the best way to go for sure.

I also earn my full time income online.

Started back in 2009 and just like you, I was buying every clever new programme out there to find the magic button. I soon realised that there isn't a magic button. All about hard work and taking action.

My tip here would be that you decide what you want to do online. Are you going to create affiliate websites or adsense sites or sell gigs at fiverr.com

Once you decide, learn everything about the structure how you can make money with the system and stick with it. Do not jump to any other ways until you give your 100% to it.

Money will show up.. Keep it simple, offer solutions to problems. That's all it is.

I tend to my design business full time which is also roped into my IM business which draws income from many streams.

I think it's key to decide early what you want to do based from the options which should come readily if you read enough, then just build upon it.

I think it was Napolean Hill who said: it doesn't matter what you do each day to improve, just do something and you'll always improve - or something to that effect. Keep your goal in mind and forge forwards!

Don't quit your job until you fully understand the fundamentals of internet marketing.

I'm one of those people who believes in working with the here and the now.

In other words, the time you now spend in airports, on airplanes and in hotel rooms is 'time treasure', no interference 'me time'. Take full advantage of it.

Plan, learn, and take action. Now is the perfect time for you to set up your internet marketing business, get the pieces in place. Yes, while alone in your hotel room. You can really think things through in that solitude.

I make my living online and offline. I divide my tasks accordingly -- those I can do in the daytime for offline and those I can do at night, most online efforts.

While you are still employed you may want to get your passive income streams in place. You can do most of that work in the evenings. If you use the down time you have while traveling for your job to build your IM businesses, you can devote most of your time while home to your family.

After you have your passive income streams in place, it is only then I would think about quitting my job. The job you have now can help pay for all the little outsourcing expenses that come up. You know, the ones that help you build your internet businesses that much, much, much faster.

The job you have now, has a greater purpose, it is going to help free you and build your new businesses. Thinking like this makes it easier to go to work.

Once upon a time I too lived in airports.

I quit my job in December 2009, and have been traveling the world since January 2010.

I do internet marketing, consulting, and create information products.

My two biggest lessons I've learned to focus on is:

    Marketing
    Content/Product Creation

If you focus on these two things in your business, you'll do well.

Marketing consists of email marketing, Pay per click, SEO, video marketing, etc.

You can succeed pretty quickly, if you look for a market that has a perceived lack of a solution.

Find people who need or want what you know, and make it so you help them get where they want to go.

The truth about ab's guy makes a little under $1,000,000 a month, he started 5 years ago. That's revenue though, he spends a ton on marketing.

People want flat great ab's, he made something just for them.

Think about your potential customers and what problems they want to solve, instead of thinking about making money.

Money is just a transfer of value. Your customer spent time making the money to buy the product you spent time making and marketing to them. You use the money to finance your lifestyle.

The transfer of value is basically time. You can spend more time with your kids, and your customer can spend more time living a happy fuller life because you helped them.

Which means, don't think of money as the end goal, think of money as a transfer of value, your customer wants to pay you their value for what value you give them, so make it valuable for them.

I trade the value I give people for freedom to travel the world and spend time with my lover. Pretty simple.

    Dear Dan

My situation was similar when I started my online career in 2008. It was not an easy journey, many times I wanted to quit but again I know that there are lots of opportunities and ways to make money online and internet marketing will be a massive source to flourish with.

Slowly I educate myself and implement it one by one. This is very important. Please don't think that you will learn it for 6 months and implement later, never do that mistake. Implement what you have learnt, and do it persistently.

Moreover please don't run from one product to another until you learn and implement those knowledge which you acquired.

Last but not the least, follow a proven step-by-step blueprint to make money online and I wish you all the very best.

Part time since 1997, full time since 1999. I could have went full time a year sooner, but I had a family to consider. I made my internet business prove to me and them that it was sustainable income before taking the plunge. I recommend that to everyone.

If you quit first, before you have an income established, it puts a lot of extra pressure on you. How good are you at handling "do or die" pressure?

I've been full time for a year or so. I do it through offline marketing (cold calling, mobile websites, google places) and have recently gotten into creating info products. I'm looking to build a more passive income instead of trading services for money.

If you take a look at all the threads that come in here on a daily basis they will all tell you the same things:

    1. There is no magic bullet. No shortcuts.
    2. Come up with a blueprint for your success. Don't just generalize, write down a business plan with every detail thought out.
    3. Stop learning and start taking action, learn as you go and you will be a lot better off.

I wish you all the best.

I started my journey about 2-3 years ago. And finally about a year ago, I started making enough money (actually more than enough) from my one and only blog that I could have quit both my day jobs. However, I didn't quit my jobs, because I like working outside the house as well.

The only advice I can give is that it truly truly does take a lot of hard work and dedication to get there. Its not gonna happen over night and believe me, there is no tool, report, WSO, plugin, program, webinar, seminar, guru or whatever that can help you get there over night.

If you can commit yourself and take action, you will get there. Juts dont give up and be dedicated. Good luck.
