Is There Such A Thing As Domain Dumping?

Several domains that had previously been listed at close to and beyond a thousand dollars have literally be sold for little money or given away for nothing over the past couple of days. That said is there such a term as "domain dumping" where domain owners/companies will look to unload domains that simply aren't selling?
I bought a domain this morning for $10 that had previously been listed at $1,000 I thought it was a mistake at first but I was then actually given control over the domain.

I suspect those are domains that are bought by what I would call cyber squatters in the hope of selling them at a vastly inflated price to some mug who doesn't know any better.

When that fails, they sell them off at $10 to get their money back.

I'll tell you a story that makes me think what I've said. Around 18 months ago I started a joint project with a friend/colleague. She already had a simple website, set up by a previous designer - who had purchased almost every variation of theirwebsite(dot)com, net, info, etc and registered them in his own name.

Because of complications with the company he had used to register them, we never managed to transer them to my colleague's account. Ultimately we decided the way forward was simply to let them lapse and we purchased the only variation he hadn't registered - .co.uk

It didn't occur to me that anyone else would want the domain name so I didn't back order the .com version. After a couple of months in cyberspace the names were released and the .com version was immediately purchased by a company in Korea who turned round and asked $5000 for it. You won't be surprised to hear that they didn't get it.

I imagine that if I offered them $10 for it now they might sell it as it is due to expire soon. It's unusable as we've trademarked the name.
