Well web directories are one of the most easy & fast way to gain natural back links. While you submit your website to similar niche directory it helps you to gain SERP on various SE's.

In short if you wish to pick up your website in short term in major search engines Directory Submission is one of most Important thing you must do.

I hope that information will help you.

What I like about directory submissions is that we can burst submit to hundreds or thousands of directory at once and not get caught as wild spamming since the acceptance for each directory would be different.
But the success rate is getting lower now.

I don't do directory submissions to thousands of directory sites, I only concentrate on the bigger ones, DMOZ and google especially.
Though it could be very hard to enter DMOZ and google, it pays the effort.

Better find directories with relevant niche as yours if you can find one, it's very hard for some niches.

It is important but it is less effective because more than 50% of directories today are dead... write a single article and submit it to 500 article directories instead.... you will get a higher chance of listing.

I agree with Talen Tech. Diretories are a good way to get backlinks pointing to your blog to help your pages to gain SERP on search engines. Search engines like to find your website by themselves. This usually. happens when their 'spiders' or 'crawlers' find a link to your site from a directory but most directories ask for link exchange and One Way Link is more valued than reciprocal link in search engine optimization. To do just that you need to:
1 - Post quality articles to your blog that readers like and link to.
2 - Submit articles to articles directories related to your subject matter.

I don't do directories because these sites are slowly getting less relevant.

Think about it... in the old days when there were no search engines, if you were looking for a product or service but did not have anything specific in mind, you went to a directory and start with the categories which you think what you are looking for could be found.

It's pretty much like the phonebook yellow pages works... say you need a plumber but don't know any one in particular, you go through the yellow pages and check under plumbing or plumber categories.

So, as far as being a source of information that people use... directories are not really used, not relevant... they might have not been for a long time now BUT since most have been around so long and have amassed a huge number of pages and have a good number of links, they are authority sites that would be good to have a link on, but links from them may not carry as much weight as other types of links.

Submit to directories with some link juice. You want dofollow links.

You don't want exchanges with a close to useless directory. You will only be helping them if you do an exchange with a directory with multiple out going links on your listing page.

Don't submit to those bulk deals where they set you up with thousands of directories. That is just asking for trouble and more than half of those directories are probably complete garbage.

Submit to Dmoz and forget about it. Wait a few years before even bothering to check lol.

You can get your site earning a few dollars a day easily with just directory listings but if you want to go after the big money, directories are just the beginning.

Being included in the yahoo directory is supposed to be good for SEO as Google trust links from there as they are all human edited. but it does cost a bit of money to be included.

I do prefer articles submissions on "ezine articles" website as the links seem to carry a bit of weight with Google. I have had sites get pushed up on page one for some long tail keywords after the article was published.

the other interesting thing about ezine articles is that Google seem to find the link within just a few hours, so they must crawl the site continuously, good for getting you indexed.

There is no easier way to do this since DMOZ is human edited, except if you happen to know the dmoz editor, you can beg him/her to get your site listed there.

Really, all you need to have is a quality blog/site, follow the guidelines for submitting to DMOZ, and cross your fingers.

I've said this in other thread but I had one of my blogs listed in DMOZ, I got 4 visits from DMOZ editors page previously (checking my blog maybe), and my blog got listed after that, with different title and description that I submitted. Maybe the editors changed it.
