My kids want to start internet marketing

This is really interesting My children have suddenly got very interested in internet marketing and making money. I think it had something to do with the first money I made from stuff that I learnt on the Warrior Forum.

So now they are asking me if they can join the Warrior Forum and what can they do to start learning and earning some money

My girls are 14 and 18, well educated and articulate. What on earth do I suggest to them that they can start with that will get their feet wet?

Thanks.
Di

I think it's great that they are interested. Why don't you give them some fundamentals of IM and teach them what works for you.

This is a good advise. Since you are their mother and guidance, you are well knowledgeable and you can teach them the basics of IM and also they can learn from your experience (the good and bad). This way you know what you teach them and they're doing IM the right way instead learning from someone else.

Hi di, this is fantastic news!

What about start learning photoshop and creating graphics? (Creating simple headers, banners, minisites, ecovers...etc..)

There is ALWAYS a demand for graphics online and they could start their own graphics design business that virtually guarantees them cash on demand!

        Possibilities are endless!

You don't want your kids to grow up to be internet marketers ...
    or was that cowboys?

Today is my sons 13th birthday and one of them asked me this
morning about signing up for Fiverr. He programs video games
and I was telling him that he may make personal games for
sale. But it's great they are showing interest in what you do.

They can at least start with some article writing gigs. Once
they have the internet research part in place it should be
    a good start.

My kids are 8 & 9 years old and both have their own blogs that they started about 6 months ago as they wanted to make some money.

...well I uploaded WordPress, built a header & ummmm.....not much has happened since .

They put 1 post on them last school holidays but that's about it. I still don't think they've really grasped the idea that they actually have to put a bit of stuff on there regularly before they'll see any return!

Anyway, I figured a blog was a good place to start as it was something they could do a fair bit of the work on and would be good for their writing skills.

I got them to give me a few ideas of what they wanted to write about, then ran it through a keyword tool and worked out which ones were best - ended up with a couple of popular kids movies. The plan is to monetise their sites with Adsense (through my account) and Amazon/CJ products...eventually .

    Cheers

Sounds like my kids - they all had a blog each because they wanted to do the whole IM thing but lost interest very quickly. The younger two don't have blogs anymore, I let their domains go but the oldest still has his blog. He is 13 now and doesn't do much with it but it makes the occasional Clickbank sale so I know if he worked on it regularly he could probably do quite well with it.

What your kids do will really depend on where their interests lie and what skills they have, but generally a blog is a good place to start.

      I hope they do well

I think that's great and I would love my daughter to follow too (she's 7 and already helps me a little bit!).

I would start by getting them to create a blog in a niche they love. They can then write lots of great articles and learn the value of sharing and giving value.

Once they've got their blog in place, they can find affiliate products that match nicely and start driving traffic via social media.

Start a JV with your kids, guide them through the process and give them their share. Then let them do a similar project alone, reporting back to you once in a while and see how they pick up.

Disclose the fact that your kids are going to sign up here on the WF forum with moderators to avoid false claims of shilling. This because you guys probably use the same IP. Did the same when my brother signed up.

Make some videos for them, videos they could watch where you explain basic outlines of IM. Plus talk with your 14 year old, is she doing it because she wants to, or is he modeling her sister and you?

My cents! Good luck and give them my regards.

That is great that your children want to get started in a business of their own.

I would give them one method step by step, something that you could show them easily and then they could duplicate.

As they go along, they will learn more, but one method that is easy is best. That way they can see success and accomplishment and then want to learn more.

I think starting off with a blog would be an easy way to get them into IM. Allow them to choose something they are interested in, and assist them with buying the domain name, getting the hosting account (or host them yourself), setting up WP, and writing the first blog post. You can check around for affiliate products closely related to the niches they choose, and teach them how to softly promote these items on their blogs.

A while back I saw a blog by a kid who reviewed toys in his age group and he had videos on Youtube but they did not reveal his face. If you really want to sell that fancy light saber thing let a kid play with it and talk about it.

For older kids, an ebay type business could be good. Perhaps they like to do crafts. There are lots of nice handmade items on ebay. And don't forget sites like etsy. There is one kid who makes candles in soup cans.

I think article writing could actually work for a kid with good grades. Or teach them to do keyword research. Or create ready made adsense sites.

Fiverrr gigs uploading WP, getting backlinks, all good kid opportunities. As long as Mom or Dad is supervising and overseeing I think the kids could make a bundle.

    Hi Di,

I don't think age should be a barrier. I would say good on them.

You will be amazed how many visitors a teenager can pull in from their already activity online. Facebook, Twitter and YouTube is an advantage and one thing about kids is they have no fear and as I always keep banging on about why people fail or even fail to get an online business off the ground is because of fear. Kids don't have that fear like adults do.

As long as they have a good work ethic then I am sure they could make a success out of it.

Here's an idea...as they are girls, why don't you set them up with a diary-type blog of their favourite stuff? You know, clothes, music, games and the normal teenager stuff. As long as they contribute a couple of times per week they will surely bring lots of traffic - all targeted - and add affiliate stuff to their diary/blog. There's lots of very interesting stuff they would love to tell the world about and there are loads of teenagers that would visit a teenager's diary/blog.

Just let them be creative and give them a free role. All you need to do is be there to edit, offer advice and help them along. I am sure they will get the hang of it.

They could even set up their own online magazine that is subscription only. Do it all in Word then convert to PDF.The potential is massive and I think you may have stumbled upon a really crafty niche there.

Go for it and the very best of luck.

This forum certainly has enough info on it to get them started.

I think the smart thing to do is teach them to use the search feature on the forum and let them find what interest them as a path to take. If you try and force one direction on them then you will just kill their enthusiasm.

Who knows, in a couple months they may be making money in a way that you would of never thought of and will be teaching you.

I have to say also, I joined this forum a couple of years ago but only started posting in the last couple of weeks. I guess I was just too busy with my online ventures and to be honest, I never had the need to hang around forums but after the journey I made and what I built up, I figured it was the moral and fitting thing to do to try and help newstarts.

I promised myself I would spend at least a few hours on this forum per week dedicated to passing on any tips, knowledge or resources to the up-and-coming Internet Marketers.

Hey, I think it's fantastic that they are showing an interest. When done right, internet marketing is a great industry to be involved in. Even if they do this whilst they are at college to earn some money whilst studying.

I'd probably get them to setup one site each... then get them to learn contentcreation, SEO basics, article marketing etc... just an overall understanding of what is involved to drive and convert traffic.

That's great! I saw something on the Today show not too long ago about a girl that started blogging about fashion starting around the age of 12 or 13 (maybe even younger, I can't remember the exact age) and her site turned into a sensation - apparently she caught the attention of some very big name fashion designers, and now she is doing quite well for herself and her family.

I'd have to agree with the others that starting out blog on a topic that they are really interested in would be ideal for getting their feet wet.

At such a young age I would encourage them to be doing it for fun not monetary reward. If they are doing something purely for the money they will lose interest in it very quickly when they see how hard it really is. Kids, even more so than adults, want instant gratification. As someone posted above, get them to start a blog on a topic they are really interested in and let them get their feet wet first. You never know where that will take them. At least this way they will pick up a lot of the skills needed to make money off the Internet later on.

That's awesome. You should definitely encourage them in whatever venture they'd like to pursue. I'd second the have them start their own blog motion. They can customize it to their interests, do some google ads, create social media profiles for their blogs, do product reviews (I bet they'd enjoy receiving and reviewing all those cool free products!), and eventually maybe transition into affiliate marketing once they've established a good following...all the while incorporating mommy's IM expertise

      Hi Diana,

      cool!

I, too, think a blog about topics they enjoy would be an ideal starting point...

One aspect which hasn't been mentioned yet: Make sure you talk to them about privacy and safety issues before they start. Since they are regularly on Facebook, they probably know the ground rules, but it might be wise to have a little talk (or keep an eye on their posts).

Things like how to handle contact requests by strangers; or that info on the internet will never be private again (and that their future bosses might use google to look them up), so be careful what you reveal about yourself; or issues like privacy of friends and classmates (e.g. when they want to post any pics or personal stories).

A lot of kids can't imagine how a few careless sentences now might affect you (or other people) later...

Hope they have fun with their projects!

As they say, "knowledge is power." What makes an IM education any different from standard school? They will just be learning a new and very powerful skill that could go a long way no matter what they decide to do in the future.

Many marketers jump in to this business out of desperation and end up paying for alot of garbage while chasing the get quick push button crap. You have a chance to educate them correctly on a relaxed time line making sure they receive the necessary IM fundamentals in the process.
This foundation will allow them to go in ANY IM direction they choose.

Overall I would say it is pretty cool that they are interested and you never know, you might end up with one of the best 'in house' think tanks in the industry.

My 10-year old daughter has been making timelapse videos recently. She just did a timelapse of our kitchen "cleaning itself" and I posted it on Youtube. I decided to set it up for monetization and let her know.

I told her that she's already made a few pennies from that video, and it blew her mind. The fact that she can post a video and make money from it is very exciting to her.

Now that she knows she can make revenue for doing timelapse videos on Youtube, she's getting really serious about it. She's analyzing every timelapse/animation she can see, trying to figure out their methods.

I think the potential for making revenue is just a side benefit of teaching your kids how to connect directly with an audience and learning what works and doesn't.

The next generation needs to understand that they're competing on a global market with people who desperately want to increase their standard of living. But it's also an amazing opportunity to connect direct with an worldwide audience. Best to learn these lessons early.

I agree with everyone who says that you should encourage this. I personally wanted to get into entrepreneurial things as a kid but my parents constantly discouraged me and told me I wouldn't succeed. It took me years to overcome that kind of negative influence.

In any case the more experience your kids get now the more successful they will be later. Just make sure that they're prepared for the inevitable failures that are in store from them and teach them that there are no such things as mistakes, only learning experiences. You don't want them getting discouraged early on.

      Welcome to the WF, Simone!

You'll have an advantage, since your mom has been here awhile and can guide you toward the best threads, etc., but browse around as much as you like. When you find something of interest, you can dig a little deeper with the 'Search' button in the navigation bar.

It doesn't take long to learn the basic terminology and concepts. Knowing what options are available will help you ask the right questions as you develop your initial goals and plans. Almost always it is best to spend extra time going with your strengths, your passions, your interests rather than basing your decisions solely on the monetizing end.

We're all in this business to make money, preferably lot of it.

The trick is to find something that YOU will enjoy because it IS a lot of work. Very little of that work is physical effort; almost all of it is mental effort. So with a minimal amount of schooling and "spare" cash for a start up, there truly is no limit where you can take this (or where this can take you, if you prefer) - provided you have a positive outlook and mindset that's focused on achieving something constructive and being self-reliant.

Don't rush. Do the brainstorming and keyword research to find the best niche(s) for YOU. Then it becomes almost obvious what you need to do, and simple to get the special knowledge and develop the skills you'll need.

The knowledge is right here on the WF and free. If you can't find an existing thread, start a new one and ask! No need to chase leprechauns, buy pixie dust, or leave it to random chance.

Do this right and you'll have a business for life - one that you can be proud of and one that pays you very well. Do this right and you can even parlay your initial business into an empire if that's your choice and you'll up to it.

Teach them how to do OnPage SEO for each article. Set them up with Web Metrics for their blogs like statcounter and google analytics.

Many people need to and like to see results of their efforts. I spend alot of time gauging the effectiveness of an article or keyword that I have been working on.

Teach them to rank in Google...and then they can do whatever they want. And they can monitor their own effectiveness.

    Di,

Great thread, and I sincerely hope your kids do well. With a mentor like yourself at their side, that shouldn't be all that difficult.

I am trying to encourage my teenagers to take up an interest in it as well, as they are all entering the workforce age. The amount of time they waste online with social sites, building popularity, and goofing around, they seem to overlook their 'instinctual' marketing ability, and the real advantages the internet offers them.

I couldn't help but notice you mentioned they took an interest when they saw you were starting to generate an income... perhaps when my income exceeds my expenses, my kids will see the benefits, and get on board

My 15 year old has helped out quite a bit, and has recently been using Photoshop to code websites in school, so she's definite becoming more and more inclined to the idea.

IMHO there's no better time for kids to take up IM, as there is an unlimited amount of opportunity for those willing to put in the time.

    All the Best,

That's awesome! If I were you, I'd do a brain-dump of everything that you've learned - the good and the bad. Give that information to your daughters as a "getting started" tutorial.

Heck, now that I'm thinking about it, you could even format that same information into a PDF and make it a WSO. There are always new marketers looking for basic information to get started.

It's nice that your kids are showing entrepreneurial spirit, so do what you can to encourage it. Even if they don't become full time Internet marketers, they could use the lessons that they learn to start other businesses down the road.

Best of luck to all of you...

I didnt read the whole thread, so excuse me if it has been said already but in my opinion you should not let them sign up for the warrior forum.

I mean you already are doing business online so why not teach them? I know that sounds obvious but instead of letting them read threads after threads just teach them basic marketing skills and give them a plan they can work on it. It's like being their coach!

Force them to act and to take massive action upon their goals!

Good luck to you and your kids!

Hi Di, my advice as a 26 year old father of 0 would be encourage them and then encourage them some more. And hope a little bit that they fail at first and then crack it and become very successful. I say this as my family ran a very successful business when I was younger and eventually became a millionaire, however I was only ever told to focus on school work and not much else. As I say i'm now 26 with 2 degrees from a quality business school but am only now starting out on my own and finding it a struggle. I only wish at 14 I would of had a go at something and built up the necessary practical skills (we can all read from a book).

On a side note, if you do get them up and running, I'll have you a bet who can make money first, them or me......i'd go for them

    Enjoy!

but be sure to advice them to concentrate on their studies. do this for fun.

because its always good to have a backup.

not everyone is cut out for IM.

if they dont make it then at least they can get a decent job.

rather than getting them too involved too young and they dont want to study.

Its nice to listen that your kids are interesting to start their online business. they can start with article writing, time by time this help them to improve their writing skills. On the other way, they can assist you in your work for some time to get experience.

That's awesome! I would suggest that they start by learning the basics of SEO and then also teach them how to harness things that they already do...like how to use Facebook to make money.
