This Simple Thing Has Help Transform My Business

Hello all,

I just want to share something simple, its a mindset and focus change that I have recently made that has helped transform my internet business.

Previously I have focused on things like how many visitors I can get to my websites etc. The problem I have found with focusing on this is that - especially if I am only using SEO methods - things are largely out of my control. Yes there are lots are things I can do to gain more visitors but even if I write 1000 article etc and submit them to article directories there is no guarantee that this will bring me XXXX visitors.

Now, what I do is I have my goal, for example; if I start a new website I might have a goal of getting 5,000 visitors to it in the first month of it being up and running properly. So I set my goal then I forget about it. What do I focus on instead? I focus on things that I can control.

So if my goal is 5,000 visitors I would then forget about it and set myself goals for things I can influence to reach that 5,000 visitors, so I might set my self goals such as:

1. Submit 100 unique articles to article directories
2. Create 5 squidoo lenses
3. Create 5 hubpages
4. Find the top 10 forums in my niche and contribute to 10 different hot topics of discussion on each with my signature link pointing to my website.
5. Create 20 blogs on my niche topic and interlink randomly between all my web 2.0 properties.
6. Submit a press release to a few different press release sites
These are just some of the things I could choose to do that I can directly control (either by outsourcing or doing them myself).

So now I know longer worry about things out of my control I only focus on things that are directly within my personal control that includes things I can outsource, but basically things I can directly manage and influence myself.

Then after I have done all the things I can directly influence for the month, at the end of the month I analyse them to see if they have brought me the result that I wanted, in this example 5,000 visitors to my site. Then I work out what has worked from what hasn't and I tweak things and set my goals for the next month, again focusing my energy on things that I can directly influence and not worrying about the rest.

The reason I think this has made a big difference for me is because before I was trying to do everything, I would have my goal of say 5,000 visitors and how I would achieve it, but all the time throughout the month I was worried about this and focused on this 5,000 goal and it took my focus off actually doing the things I needed to do to achieve it.

Where as now, as long as I have done all the things I set out to do that I directly influence I Know I am doing what I can and if things aren't working I just need to analyse them and tweak and change them, but every ounce of my energy is spent on things that can influence and not worrying about things I can't. I hope that makes sense...

Anyway, I just thought I would share this because it is really working for me at the moment and it might just work for some others as well.

How things be out of control if you use SEO?

Basically the lenses, hub pages, articles you are creting are found in search engine results. Do you know that?

    Ex:
You wrote an article and publishes on EZA.
There are 50 - 50 chances for that page - 1. to be found DIRECTLY on SERPs for your keyword and comes your site, 2. Visitor of EZA likes your article title and reads and comes to your site. So don't just neglect SEO.

    BTW, Cool post Joe!

I think he meant as far as making money off the visitors and how much money he makes.

But you're right, it was a very good post! Very good advice!

And the most important part is that he has a great plan. Without a plan a person is just a kite without a string floating along wherever the wind may blow.

      Hi radhika,

yes I am aware of the things you mentioned. The point I was making was that you could do all that and in the first month still only have 100 people visit your web page.

Have you ever written an article or made a squidoo lens using a keyword that you found that had very little competition and yet was searched for lots - yet when you made them and even when you got some links to them, you still had hardly any views? Well, I certainly have. So that was what I was talking about, you can do all the right things but still you are at the mercy of other factors.

Now, yes I know that if you do things correctly that you are greatly increasing your chances of getting the result you require, but do you remember the old major google squidoo slap back in 2008 (or was it late 2007? Can't remember).

So back to my point again. Which was have your goals and then just focus on the things you can influence and the rest will take care of itself. I have found this to be the most effective way for me to work. So I am doing everything I need to do, without getting distracted with the bigger picture of my big goal, because by doing all my little goals, I am greatly increasing my chances of achieving my bigger goal.

Hope that clarifies things, maybe I didn't make it clear enough in my first post.

Your welcome, I am still working on being really successful at this stuff - I have only had marginal success to date - but if anything I can offer helps anyone else, then all the better.

I think what you are trying to say is set a goal, break it down into the steps to reach the goal, then do the steps every day.

I worked 6 months, every day, building backlinks, doing link exchanges, posting etc. I would try to do 5 every morning before I got in the shower to go to work.

    After 6 months, I was on page 1 :-)

It works, but not if you don't work. Every day - do 5 things. After 6 months, that's 1000 things. And...6 months is NOT that long.

Of course, if you did 100 things a day for SEO, you'd get there a lot quicker.

winebuddy, you put it so much more succinctly than me.

But I also wanted to go a bit further and explain some of the pyschology that I think is going on behind it, because I think many people do set goals and then break them down, but then they spend to much time still thinking about there big goal and at the end they are so distracted thinking about their big goal that they are actually not doing their little goals and at the end of it all they wonder why they are not getting anywhere and they will swear blind that they are setting goals and trying to achieve them.

Well, that is what I know happens to me anyway and that is what I am now fighting to put right.

    Great post, Joe

Our goals have to be action focused rather than result focused, as we just can't control all of the variables that lead to a particular result but we can control our own actions

Now, Katie, you truly did say what I wanted to say in much fewer words. You have nailed it. Thanks for putting it in brief, I think that will help everyone to understand better than my long winded explanations.
