    Don't worry about it.

I highly doubt that is going to be an issue as it's the same url.

      FLOYD!!!!

How can you give advice like that out????...

That is NOT the same URL... <--- read that again!!!!!!!!!!!..

I can't believe how much crap gets spouted around here as fact, when it simply isn't true.

      Now.. back to the OP...

What you need to do with your domain is.. canonicalize it...

Open up your .htaccess via FTP

and then right at the top before anything else, you might have nothing in your .htaccess, but if you do then you need to insert, right at the top:

      RewriteEngine on
      RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^mydomain\.com
      RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.mydomain.com/$1 [R=permanent,L]

Obviously substituting the mydomain for your actual domain...

Save and close your .htaccess.. job done..

You can switch the WWW pre-fix and choose which one you want to absorb your future pagerank.. if you don't do this then your page rank WILL be shared across the two over time.

It would help if you haveGoogle webmaster tools too, you can notify Google to remove whichever one you don't want to appear, although the re-direct above will do it, notifying google will draw attention to it quicker if your site doesn't get crawled much.

      Peace

Not trying to bash you, just trying to wrap my head around this.

        So, according to Google, this:

        www.hotmail.com

        Is a different url than:

        hotmail.com

And gets you hit with a duplicate content penalty?

        Strange.

Yes, Floyd.. that's right, those two URL's are totally different in Google's eyes.

Agree with Jay's advice - but this is not a duplicate content issue as they are seen as separate sites.

Dear April: I don't want any trouble from you.
January was long, February was iffy, March was a freaking dumpster fire.
So sit down, be quiet, and don't touch anything.

LOL @ me.. yeah, Kay's right.. I was trying desperately not to get into any duplicate content discussions.. we had a long, drawn out discussion this morning in a membership site forum...

But all domains NEED to be canonicalized.

Ya I'm getting tired of the phrase "duplicate content" I think we need to change it to "The Phrase That Is Not To Be Spoke Of"

    You can also add:

    $ [NC]

after the .com in the first string to catch any case sensitive entries in the address bar..

  • I have a similar problem. I have a site where mysite.com has a PR2 and traffic, but www.mysite.com has no PR and no traffic. I am using WP, and installed something that forces the www out or something. Is this something I need to fix? And how can I without losing my PR2
