If you're strapped you can simply begin by increasing your number of FB friends, which is really not very hard to do. I actually added 100+ in the past week alone using the "mutual friends" method. More friends = more opportunities to expose others to your fan page and Twitter.

Aside from that, give them a reason to follow and like. That's pretty basic stuff, I guess.

You can always run some kind of contest or giveaway where you can make a Like or a Follow a mandatory entry...this is especially good if you have a blog with a ton of followers...

You can always use Facebook ads but they are not free.

The best way to get likes/followers is to create something people would love to show to their friends.

No marketing trick can outperform viral explosions, but it's unpredictable what will go viral next.

Seem to be a lot of fiverr gigs offering these services, 1000 likes etc but the majority of them seem to be fake accounts. I tend to stick to promoting to a high number of fans as you will be guaranteed to get at least a couple real followers instead of wasting your time with mindless fake accounts that gradually get deleted.

My picks on Fiverr for Social Marketing are below:

    1) Jazzy7 - A heap of work is done for the $5 your forking out, bookmarks, promoting to fans etc, got some good results even to my affiliate link.

    2) alanletsgo - Promoted me to his active fans, ended up with 20 or so new likes, seem to be real people but time will tell, looks good so far.

    3) rmbrown - Gave me some quality linkedin connections, received some steady growth ever since.

All have some great feedback and have attain top rated seller status, have tried a few others with a bit of feedback but seem to send poor proof and minimal results. Goodluck with getting some likes

As salad21 mentioned you could go the fiverr route.

I would also recommend using Facebook ads targeted at your market with a pay per thousand. That way if you tighten who gets contacted to maybe 1000-2000 those people will see your ad possibly 10-20 times($25 budget) and be more likely to sign up to your fan page with a good call to action.

Thanks for this Andy. One thing about Facebook Ads is you really can narrow down a target audience to exactly what kind of followers that you are looking for.

For Twitter try using 'friend or follow' to cut down some of the people you are following who aren't following back, even up the ratio a bit. Also, try grouping those 80 something followers into different lists, may generate a little extra visibility for your page.
