New Record - 250,000 pageviews yesterday

Thanks to the close pass of asteroid 2005 yu55, I generated about 250,000 pageviews yesterday. It was the best Adsense day I've ever had.

I already have an authority site, so that helped, but I was able to figure out early on that there was an online controversy brewing about what was going to happen with the asteroid. Would it hit the planet or not? Legitimate researchers knew that it wasn't going to hit, but I also knew there would be people trying to freak out the public.

We wrote a series of articles debunking the myths and providing legitimate information about the close pass. I also targeted a huge number of keywords that I knew people would be searching for.

How did I do that?

I used a template. Another object that had caused a similar freakout a couple of years ago. I knew all the keywords people used to search for the previous asteroid, and so I used them for the new one.

You can do the same thing. If you want to know what people are going to be searching for in the 2012 Olympics, just look at what they searched for during the 2008 Olympics. You're going to see a predictable set of queries.

And when the next asteroid makes its Earth flyby, which it will, I'll be ready.

Congrats! It always pays to think ahead. Basing your idea on a a past similar event is very clever. I often find that my best traffic comes when I'm writing about something current/controversial.

Nice site by the way - I've bookmarked it.

      Hi Fraser,

I second that question - and, more importantly, how many clicks / what kind of conversion rate did you get?

A lot of visitors is nice... but I'd rather have 2000 visitors converting at 10% than 20000 converting at 0.5%....

      Thanks for sharing!

Another nosey question for you, if you don't mind, although I understand if you'd rather I minded my own business

I see it's on a different domain, but what's the rough percentage of traffic that you get to your forum, as opposed to the main site? Thanks in advance and nice work fella.

@RobKonrad - I'm monetized differently than many sites out there. So pageviews = revenue. It was the best Adsense day I've ever had, though - $1,070. It was from about 200,000 unique users. It's my goal to convert new visitors into regular subscribers, etc. Although I probably should monetize better, it's a very low-paying niche compared to other stuff.

@ExRat - I actually have no idea how much traffic the forum gets. I removed GA from it a few years ago. I'm guessing 300,000 pageviews?

Universe Today itself gets about 5,000,000 pageviews a month.

Hi Fraser, thanks for sharing! That really is better revenue than I expected, the visitors (probably?) mostly being "untargeted" viewers interested in a news fad... congratulations on that! Should you have any optin list of these kind of people, let me know via PM - I would like to discuss an option with you.

I would put Amazon or other affiliate programs on the site selling telescopes, and also place those telescope affiliate products on telescope review pages.

You may not sell telescopes daily, but the ones that you do sell could potentially make you a whole lot more money.

Would you rather have the commission on the sale of the telescope with a payment of $5 to $50, OR the Adsense at 20 cents a click for an advertiser who sells telescopes?

I would also put the Amazon Contextual Widget on the pages, because it will pull up science books to show next to your stories. Once again, it may pay more than Adsense, but more importantly, if someone ends up on Amazon from your link, they usually buy more than one product. I have been paid from Amazon for the sale of up to 5 items to the same person in a day.

I would probably also add NeverBlue's widget to your site. You can choose what ads to put in your ad block, and then put one code on your site that rotates the NeverBlue offers. Zip submits sometimes pay $1 per lead, and those can add up fast.

@tpw - thanks for the suggestions. I've experimented heavily with every variety of affiliate program and advertising network. I've also direct sold my own advertising, and even created advertising networks of my own. Although you'd think that affiliate programs would work well, they don't hold a candle to the amount of revenue I make from Adsense.

Hi Brit, I'm glad to help everyone. Going from 3000 to 8000 is an amazing accomplishment, you should be very proud. Now you just need to scale up some more. Do what you did, just do more. :-)

    My method is really simple.

    1. Choose a niche you're passionate about.
    2. Solve problems in your niche and help as many people as possible.
    3. Target the keywords that your audience is searching for.

Thanks, my approach seems similiar to yours. Now if I could only see a portion of the results you are!! The problem I am having is knowing how to "scale it up". At the moment, I am writing a free e-book that I plan to use to build my list. I think this is the next step for me to scale it up, but then what????

Do you have multiple sites or just one authority site? Since I am very passionate about my niche, I don't know that I could really duplicate the success. The niche is the only thing that I have so much knowledge and passion for. Thanks for any advice!

    Dude.

If you are getting that much traffic you need to integrate Facebook comments or something.

I can't see how you get so many pageviews but so little on the likes + comments O.o but then again it might be because you have so many pages.

Obviously you're doing something right though and keep it up!

And thanks for saying it's not the end of the world. Too many people are just so eh. We aren't going to just disappear because of a prediction, we're more likely to disappear because of our own actions as the human race.

@profitmaster7 - I was actually posting because someone else had mentioned that it would be cool if they could rank for a bunch of space terms. 2005 yu55. Well, I actually did, so I thought it would be helpful to explain my thought process, to be prepared for this kind of short term spike in traffic.

    http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...oney-yu55.html

@ingenyes - I've been through enough of these events to know what the keywords are going to be. Then I write my articles to make sure they're properly targeted for when the event breaks. Some events happen every year like clockwork, like various meteor showers. Others are one time events, like these asteroid passes. Other stuff are surprises - remember that spiral over Norway - so you have to hustle to get the new out when it's breaking.

@jgant - Thanks, I've just got a head start on you. I've been seriously targeting keywords for about 3 years now. So, I'm sure you'll be there too, it's just a matter of getting the pages built and published.

@anwar001 - I made about $1,100 that day. Best day ever.

@Jielim - in this case I used my experience. I looked at a previous asteroid flyby and looked at all the keywords it generated. Then I targeted those keywords again, but with the new asteroid name. You can also use the Google Adwords Keyword Tool.

Let's say you wanted to dominate the launch of a new video game that you think is going to be popular. For example, Mass Effect 3. To figure out what people are going to be searching for, just study Mass Effect 2. mass effect 2 characters, mass effect 2 weapons, mass effect 2 walkthrough, etc. Then target the "3" versions of those.

@airallineed - thanks for catching that, I fixed it.

@greatestwarrior - Just use the Google Adwords Keyword Tool. Put in 2008 Olympics and see what the tool returns. For example, go to Google.com and put in "2008 olympics", you'll see suggestions like "2008 olympics medal count". So, you can assume that people will be searching for "2012 medal count".

Try using Ubersuggest. Put in 2008 olympics, and you'll see suggestions like:

    2008 olympics
    2008 olympics swimming
    2008 olympics basketball
    2008 olympics medal count
    2008 olympics soccer
    2008 olympics opening ceremony
    2008 olympics swimming results
    2008 olympics gymnastics team
    2008 olympics tennis
    2008 olympics track and field

So... replace 2008 with 2012 and you know what people are going to be searching for.

Congratulations on your site. This serves as an inspiration to those who would want to generate more traffic in their blogs, too. And thanks for the hints that you have mentioned about how you did it.
