Can someone explain page rank to me please?

I have several websites which have been created this year and one in particular which was created in September.

Most of the sites are updated and posted too regularly, have achieved alexa rankings in the low 1 millions but the page ranks sit at zero.

The one which was created in september has had one post, an alexa ranking in the 15 millions but has acheived a page rank of 2.

It doesn't make sense to me and can anyone shed any light?

And what difference does this make?

    In Google's own words:

PageRank is Google's system for ranking web pages. A page with a higher PageRank is deemed more important and is more likely to be listed above a page with a lower PageRank.

However, more recently, PageRank seems to have been losing its perceived importance. Often, searches will throw up results where PR3 or 4 which are outranked by apparently lesser sites.

BTW: according to Wikipedia, Page Rank is named after Larry Page, NOT actual web pages...

Basically, Page rank is scored by Google on a scale of 1-10.

    Google is PR10.

    Facebook is PR10

A really good back linking system will do wonders to improve your page rank and/or Alexa ratings.

Have a look at the WSO section of this forum. There was something called Linkclaw that I'm guessing is pretty good as I had 5 e-mails (from Warriors I respect) today about it, or go to fiverr.com and start building a backlink system there.

    Hope that helps,

Think of websites linking to your website as votes....more links equal more votes. The sites with the most (and best) votes get ranked the best at Google.

      It's a little more complicated than that...but that's it in a nutshell.

As you try to market your site and among other things focus on Page Rank, please be mindful not to over-emphasize on Page Rank. The latest on Page Rank is that with the passage of time as Google's search algorithm becomes more and more sophisticated (in fact per one Google engineer, they tweak their algorithm each day), the significance of Page Rank alone as a factor in a given site's rankings seems to be diminishing.

You'll find marketers who are still stuck with the same mindset from a few years back when increasing their PageRank value was central to their marketing strategy. With the passage of time and with the web becoming more and more of a social medium and with mega social players like Facebook and Twitter (etc) in the foray, there's now a lot more complexity in Google's ranking techniques/algorithm.

Another tidbit you might find interesting is that Google now updates page rank less and less over time. In the last year there have only been a handful (possibly 2) Page Rank updates. Hope this information helps you in putting Page Rank in overall perspective. The best information about these topics can be gleaned from watching some interviews done by Google search engineering team. Some of these interviews can be found on Google web site itself and some on popular search engine marketing blogs.

Just forget that the Pagerank exists and follow the golden rule : getting quality links from relevant websites.

You'll only need to know about Pagerank when you're buying or selling links, because that's a parameter ( a non-sufficient one though ) buyers and sellers take into account when valuing links.
