A Word Of Advice... Re-new Your Domains Early...

Hi,

If anyone read the thread I had to put up...

It was definitely a lesson I have learned and
would like to tell you the same thing...

If your domains are coming up for expiry soon
(and you don't want to lose them)
re-new them at the earliest possible time!

My situation really had me in a corner, but I will
now re-new my domains as soon as I get the
email telling me to re-new them.

Just wanted to get that out!

Thanks guys and a special thanks to JayXtreme,
you are golden homie, and a very good person!!!

Or you could just set them to auto-renew... at least on the ones that matter to you.

Many times, I'll have quite a few domains coming due on GoDaddy. I'll call them to renew and they'll allow you to renew at a nice discount.

      It pays to ask.

Also make sure you don't change your email address because if you forget your password it's a big hassle if you can't access the email you signed up with.

Have you ever received one of those letters in the mail from a company that doesn't host your domain name but is asking you if you want to renew? They send out a fairly convincing expiration notice and ask you to send in a check.

I hope nobody falls for that one...

I got one today. I just let them waste their money on postage and paper.

Whenever I register a new domain, I check to see which are coming up for renewal. I then renew them at the same time and use a coupon code for the whole lot.

When you let them auto-renew you pay full price.

Auto Renew is in case you forget. I usually renew mine early with a coupon code. GoDaddy sends out emails probably about 2 months ahead of the due date on the renewal. Gives you plenty of time to respond.

Where do you get the coupon codes from? I just autorenew as well.

            Just a note on autorenew.

Some registrars autorenew domain names nth days before expiration, not on
the day itself. Ask your registrar or read their FAQ prior to activating it.

Last thing you'd want is dealing with an unwanted autorenew later on. You
also ought to consider renewing more than a year if you foresee keeping it for
            a longer period.

I get those, but every one of them, if read carefully, says it is not a bill, just an offer to renew your domain.

if you use namecheap, you wont lose it if you forgot.. somehow, the cool kids at namecheap put them on hold for you but the content will be down, and will be showing their ads.

You can renew without any charge.. done too many times. :-)

I use namecheap and just lost two domains that I had sitting idle. I knew I was supposed to renew but was on vacation and forgot. (Should do auto-renew. Now I know)

Went in to renew two days after the expiration date and they were nowhere to be found in my account. Checked whois and it shows they have been re-registered.

      I assume someone got them.

Really asianlunatic... I should look into that...

I am with Namecheap, but either way would've
hated losing the domain that was up for expiration.

Maybe the FAQ's say so... I'mma look!

I have a special list on my autoresponder. All the emails on the list are mine. I call it my "Nag List."

Any time I need to remember something important, like a domain renewal, I schedule a broadcast to the list with a reminder. If it's something I tend to set aside, I'll set up multiple reminders.

Why send it to multiple addresses? In systems design, they call it 'redundancy'...

If the message went to just one account, and got snagged in a filter...or lost in a heavy volume...or accidentally deleted...or..., I'm in the weeds. If it goes to half a dozen accounts, the odds I'll miss it are pretty slim.

Did you click on the "Reactivate Domains" link (on the left nav bar -- under "Manage Domains")?

If 30 days (I think! Don't quote me on that) haven't passed yet, you might still find them in there ready for renewal by... you!

    Hope you find 'em.

Recently I had a domain up for renewal with godaddy
About a month before it was due I did a google search on the domain and found that godaddy had it up for sale at $500
This was a month before the renewal was due
      I renewed it straight away

        Ya,

I just checked my Statcounter and I am getting mad hits from all over
the place... somewhere's prolly listed it as coming up for re-newal...

No referring link though, so I'm not sure where it's listed.

Of course... many sources can figure out domains coming
up for expiry and the traffic etc that the site is getting!

      Namecheap.com - Registration Agreement

You acknowledge and agree that we may, but are not obligated to, participate in this process, typically called the "Redemption Grace Period" ("RGP")...

The typical RGP fee is $200 plus any registration fees.
All domain registrars supporting .com charge a higher fee to redeem than their
regular renewal fees because they're billed by a "higher authority" (also called
the Registry) for it. But none are required to charge a "consistent" amount to
their end users, so some are higher than others depending on their business
      models.

So try to renew your domain names early, autorenew if you're aware of how it
works with your registrar, note when they're going to expire, and do not rely
on your registrar's renewal notice/s as not all may necessarily reach you. Just
take it from someone who's worked in the business in a previous life.

Wow I wish I would've known about Namecheap's late renewal thing. I lost a domain of mine because of slight non-interest at the time. But when I checked to see if it was available again it was taken!

I just thought some sniper sits back and buys up all the expired domains hoping to sell them at premium back to the owner.

I guess the joke's on me haha.

Glad I learned this today and I am definitely putting my domains on auto-renew so there's no hiccups.

Well i would say to have it on auto renew, because even if you forget, the auto renew would do it for you and you won't lose out on your domain.

It is as easy as setting it on auto renew. One might become forget manual renewal if he controls several domain names
