If you could start IM again . . .

Hello Warriors!

There's obviously a LOT of experience in this forum, and since everyone seems to help one another here I thought I would ask a question that would help me, and hopefully help IM newcomers.

I've been in IM a couple of months now, so I am still learning certain techniques of driving traffic, website design and increasing conversion rates. I am by no means an 'expert'!

If you could go back to when you started Internet Marketing, and you could change one thing that you believe would have made the biggest increase in profits to you, what would it be?

I keep finding new aspects of IM to venture into (but on one website), but if I could use your wisdom to prioritise my time, that would be fantastic!

    Also to prioritise your time here is my 2 cents.

    Stay with one thing for at least 6 months. Do not jump at every shiny object that you see. Stick with it through thick and thin. If it doesn't work in 1 week it doesn't mean it wont work you just got to keep pushing.
  • I think personally and for many others it would have been build a list of buyers and prospects.

    Also to realise you need turn visitors into prospects, prospects into buyers and buyers into repeat buyers :-)

    • I'd test and track campaigns from day one . Build an email list.

      And try to understand the competition much better.

    I would have started out by offering services right away instead of trying to chase other promises of instant cash. I think that any newbie should find some serice to offer right away. It gives the confident boost that there is actually money to be made online and gives you the funds you will need to move on to bigger and better things.
  • Like almost everyone who jumps into IM for the first time, I kept buying into the latest "method." Truth is, you need to WORK, just like any other job. Stop chasing the latest and greatest method and get to work.
  • I'd get a mentor! I'd get aweber sooner! I'd improve my market research! ...so many hours wasted on unprofitable niches :/
  • I would have not bought all the "shiny objects" as they say on this forum--every product that promises fast results and making a ton of money (it just is not true).

    I would have considered this a business like any other and knew it would take some time to build up like any other business.

    I would have joined this forum and joined the War Room immediately.

    I would have started building a list immediately as then you really have an asset.

    I would have known that most things for sale in IM that promise the moon are given away for free or greatly reduced in price in about a month when everyone realizes that it really doesn't work as advertised to make you millions.

    I would've found that the basics of creating a simple website, getting traffic and building a list of clients and then serving your clients still works just like it always has and probably always well.

  • Simple although I have some valuable domain names, (only a few thousand dollars each) back then I would have bought every one word .com there was.

  • If I focused on list building in 1999, I would be retired by now. If Doc Brown ever lends me the Delorean, then I will be all set.

    • Wow, someone that wouldn't change anything! Have you got any tips for newbies - if you think you've done everything the most profitable way it would be interesting hearing your strategy.

      List building seems to come up quite often - I think I'll need to chase that avenue - just the ~$30 a month subscription to Aweber (I know it's not THAT much) that seems to put people off it!

  • Mr Wilson and Sbias has the same opinion as I do, I would've started a LOT sooner and get Aweber straight away. I lost over 1000 subscribers when I went over to Aweber (which was nearly all I had at the time).

    Getting a mentor can help, but isn't necessary if you manage to get your hands on a good, solid training course.

    Two courses I did when starting out was Matthew Bredel's TruGuru program (check matthewbredel dot com) and Michael Cheney's My millionaire mentor 2011 course (a lot of ads here but good some really good tips)
