Need Cash Fast -- How the "Guru" Would Do It

Preface - please let's don't debate the term guru or whether they are good or bad or whether they exist or if it's right or wrong to call someone a guru. Let's also not debate guru versus expert vs mentor, etc. Guru, as used in this case, is someone that most of us would consider as someone who knows what they are talking about and/or someone who is very entrepreneurial - an achiever type - someone not afraid to let it all (or most of it) hang out in order to get what they want. To drop a few names many people would consider Mike Filsaime, Paul Myers, Allen Says, John Reese, Yanik Silver, Marlon Sanders, Willie Crawford, John Carlton, plus many more as an online guru. Offline gurus may include people such as Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Richard Branson, etc.

******

Many people are desperate because of the economic situation, layoffs, foreclosures, etc. Many people come here looking for answers.

Most people get this answer whether they need money tomorrow or next month: Go find a job. We talk about how a McDonald's job is the way to go. We talk about steady and sure income. We talk about not wasting our money and holding on to our cash with both hands. We talk about not risking our family's future. We talk about how online marketing is NOT the way to go - it's NOT easy - it's NOT right if we're desperate, etc.

Of course some have answers such as write articles, provide services offline such as building websites, etc. But the majority always talk about getting a job.

Interestingly, even people who sell make money quick WSOs or effortlessly and instantly earn money say go get a job.

The question here is: what would a guru do if they were just laid off or if they were facing foreclosure, or their daughter needed a new kidney or she was going to die. Would they spend all day out looking for a McDonald's job or would they figure out a way to make something happen, online or off, that might be risky but make a bigger difference than $6 take home pay per hour with the first check due in 3 weeks?

I'll share my thoughts after I read some of yours.

    Hi Mark,

when I read the title, I was already looking for Paul Myers "desparate" thread to paste it... but your question is obviously different.

I usually would assume that a "guru" has enough pocket money for that new kidney. But let's assume things go bad, stock investments go ugly etc. and the money is gone.

Would anyone in that situation walk the tough road and go jobbing in the fast food chain of your choice? I highly doubt it.

What sets "gurus" apart from Mr. regular guy? He can leverage. So let's even assume that this valuable 300+k subscriber list is gone because aweber closed the account for lack of payments

He still has a) his knowledge and b) all his industry contacts. He can pick up the phone, call his mates and say "look, I'm in this terrible situation. I don't expect you to give me any money - but do me a favor and support {insert quick-cash project here}."

The average guy does not have these kind of contacts... so that's why for Mr. Average guy, best recommendation is: Go flipping burgers if you need quick cash. For Mr. Guru: User your knowledge and your contacts.

    Cheers,
    Rob Konrad

Exactly. Being an expert implies that you have expertise, at the least. The "get a job" advice isn't meant to discourage people form what's possible, but to suggest something that's more likely to put cash in the pocket of someone who's desperate to make some quick money. If you're a guru then you have leverage that's simply not available to the average Joe or Jane.

Good point Rob. Let's assume, for purposes of this discussion, that it was the same person with the same attitude, same fortitude, same spirit - just no contacts or cash or other "unfair" leverage.

Even if you took away their contacts and other tangible assets, they still have knowledge and skills that the average person doesn't.

^^ That's right, but without his contacts, having to start again from scratch would be a nightmare.

I'd say he would be in a similar situation as most people on this forum who haven't earned any money. - He would need to start from the ground up.

If I was in this situation I would start an online service (such as SEO, website creation, sale video development, etc) from the ground up.

I would be experienced in sales pages so I would know what converts well.

I would also know where to promote it most effectively and I would know the exact websites that benefit the sales in the highest possible way.

So with this, I would run a high quality service of my choosing and ensure my clients are happy and stay for the long term.

I would collect testimonials and scale up my promotional methods.

Should be up and running with a full income within months. - The dribs and drabs when I am starting out would be reinvested in the business.

Henry Ford was once asked what he would do if he lost everything he had. His answer was "I'd have it all back in 5 years". He probably would have too since he would have the skill and the confidence to quickly move towards rebuilding.

This being said, even he might have had to have gotten a day job to fuel his endevours. Unless you have somebody willing to loan you money during cash flow crisis, a day job or freelance work really is the only way to stay afloat.

Lets be honest, writing articles or doing seo work for somebody else really isn't that much different than a day job. Just better hours.

Well, we're way off into "alternate universe" here, but remember...every single "guru" started just as you say...no contacts, no list, no...anything.

Once you've seen it work in your life, why would you do things differently (in an "overall" sort of way) if you had to start over?

To be honest, the type of personality that can build their success online isn't going to be kept down for long.

    It's mindset.

The economy is in a rough place, and unemployment is high...so why do I keep getting "real world" job offers, while others can't get hired?

For the same reason that your question is a bit of a trick question...successful people became successful people because of their drive, determination, focus...and willingness to do whatever they have to do to reach their goals.

An average person would stand at the drive-thru window and mutter "I can't believe I'm stuck in this dead-end job, but there's nothing better out there."

A "guru" (as you've defined it), if they somehow found themselves in dire enough straits to be standing at that same drive-thru window, would be muttering "Good. Step one is done; I'll eat tonight.", then quit after a week or two (or whenever that job had served their overall purpose).

Jobs, blogs, Facebook ads, lists, products...they're all just means to the ultimate end...be satisfied with your life.

At least...they are to a "guru".

    Hi Mark,

hmmmm.... bad proposal. no "unfair" leverage is okay, but I doubt that a "guru" has the same attitude and spirit as "mr. john doe?"

Depends on how much cash and how fast they need it.

I would suspect most gurus are good at selling. So the fastest way to make money would be to sell soemthing. If they still had their knowledge than the fastest way to make money would be to sell that knowledge to either as many people as they could as quick as they could or to a very small number of people who will pay a lot for it.

Since they have no list that means likely going for a few who pay well. This means hard core local networking to get to the people locally with money. Pitch them on why I can make them money. My knowledge, their investment. Use part of their investment to pay bills while the start up is started. Within a few months be raking it in again.

The JV with money was only needed because money was needed now. If you can part people with no money from their last $37 bucks you can easily part someone with serious cash of say $50,000 for part ownership in something that will pay him back a few hundred thousand.

If you have site, or blog building skills, such as doing many things with Wordpress, start applying at freelance sites that relate to your skill. Apply to as many jobs regarding that skill as they will allow you to do. This is one thing I did.

A "guru" has the contacts and his own network that will support him.

He'll spend like 10k on a new project, have everything done by others, do some affiliate promotions and make 5 or 6 figures in a months time.

The average Joe here would never be able to do that.

The difference is completely in mindset. They are not going to ponder $6 an hour because they see that as a waste of time. Even if they do not have contacts, they have the knowledge and skills to rapidly build contacts and partners.

They are going to be asking questions and writing down ideas which are intended to make $10,000/day or /hour and not ideas to generate a couple hundred dollars. They are going to CREATE IDEAS which generate ENTHUSIASM AND DESIRE.

If they came to the Warrior Forum looking for people to help them accomplish their GOALS they would not send a message to 99.9% of us, including me. They would quickly scour the forum looking for the most INFLUENTIAL people on the forum and start making contacts. You can almost be guaranteed they are not going to be doing their contact through email or PM except long enough to get a phone number. They want to CONNECT and COMMUNICATE to sell their DREAM not their plight.

Even in their current state of need they would be CONVINCING, CONFIDENT, and showing each person they contacted how their proposed IDEAS would make them both higher profits. They are not seeking a free ride or generosity, just an OPPORTUNITY.

Before a few days were over they would have forged FRIENDSHIPS and PARTNERSHIPS most of us would struggle to make in years online because we will not make the same effort or reach out in the same way they did.

Becoming a guru was not a matter of luck, it was a matter of WILL POWER, DESIRE, and DRIVE. They still have all of those traits. It is the same core traits you see in the stories of Walt Disney, Donald Trump, and many other highly successful people who have lost it all and within a very short time rebuild from the ashes.

You can almost bet at the end of his first week or two he'd have helped forge deals, driven sales, and helped someone accomplish more.

    Barry
