How would you monetize this amazing site?

Hi fellow Warriors

MavericksOfTheMind.com

I have not done IM for a few years and need your faithful help with my new project.

We are trying to revamp this site so it can make some money for it's author.

first, we want to convert it to wordpress. What theme would you recommend?

Here are my obvious ideas for monitizations:

1. adsense on each page
2. link to interviewee's book or product on Amazon

A few questions:

1.The author has a FB page and has a following. When I brought up that we need to offer some kind of newsletter he and the webmaster felt that there was no need because of FaceBook. My feeling is that we want to build a list besides FB because not everyone is on FB and we can somehow make money with the list. Do you agree? If so, how would you use this list?

2.I think that a forum would be very beneficiary to this site. Each author can have their own section. Would you agree? and what forum program would you recommend?

3. If you were monitizing this site what else would you do?

Thank you for all your help!

Suz

    Hi Suz,

ugh - - I agree, that page badly needs a port from 2003 to 2011.

For the WP theme, have a look at themeforest, they have loads of amazing themes for little money.

For the monetization - don't overdo it with adsense. From the alexa rankings, this page has not a huge amount of traffic; it's a pretty plain topic, so too many ads will kill it.

    Cheers,
    Rob Konrad

I checked out the site. Here a few things you can do.

-Optimize ad placement and change the color scheme of the text to make it fit the page more.

    - The ads don't look too relevant to the content, so I'd try placing Chitika ads on the front page just incase your traffic comes in via the Google SE. Your conversion rate will be a bit higher if they see images if things they were previously searching for on Google on your site.

-Build a list and market relevant products and services to your subscribers. Aweber on the front page for sure. Once you start having an increase in traffic try a service called Pop Up Domination that pops your squeeze page in front of the user when they enter your site.

    - Lastly, try using OptimizePress to make your site look a bit more clean. It's an optional thing though.

Overall, your site looks pretty good. Those few tidbits of advice just help at least a little if you implement them right.

I personally wouldn't do either, I would create a product related to mindset related stuff and get out there and start making connections with key plauers in that field.

I would drive traffic with ppc to a squeeze page to build a list, and this stage I would be happy if it was just breaking even.

I would then start contacting key players in the niche and start interviewing them, I would further monetize the interviews with affiliate links and stuff like that, to email and continue to build good will with my list, as I am doing interviews I am building relationships with these key players, the I would simply ask them if they will email their lists the interview, and give them an affilait elink to my product through the interview.

this would really pick up momentum and start creating some huge paydays, far more than adsense of amazon ever could.

      And this ^^^ exactly.

Or even promoting some suitable product as an affiliate, without creating one, would be a step in the right direction.

I don't mean it critically, at all, but if I owned this site, I'd be looking for a different, better, more productive monetization-model for it, before being concerned about updating its appearance. I wouldn't be too interested in AdSense or Amazon income, for it. (That said, I do agree that a move to Wordpress - to any presentable theme at all - will help, too).

I was convinced you needed a blog or forum till one book made a good argument against it. I don't think you really need to convert to a blog, if you want automatic content put an smf forum in a subfolder and add your website title and link to the footers with instructions to "Click Here" for blah blah

I prefer forums over blogs for content since a forum will treat incoming rss content the same way outgoing rss content is treated. A wp blog will only add your original content to your outgoing rss feed.

        Thanks, Alexa.

I agree that Dwayne and nicholasb have great points.

The author has many new interviews that are ready to be posted. He also has two other cool sites SexAndDrugs.info and AnimalsAndEarthquakes.com which need monitization. I am trying to wrap my brain around what kind of product we should create.

Also, I was thinking that maybe there should be a few different lists -- depending on your interests. Psychedelic Art list, Consciousness, Tantra and so forth. The subjects are so varied. Then create or find products specifically for that list.

Is this what you mean when you say "a productive monetization-model?"

Is there any other model that might work here?

I like this idea. What I am getting out of this post (and the others... big thanks) is that the author should create some product like an ebook (combo of old and new interviews, maybe with a bonus of some audio which I think he has). start an affiliate program for the product. Offer the major players the interview for them to post on their sites or in their lists and give them a cut of the profit of the book.

Since some of these people probably have huge lists and lots of traffic this can generate tons of traffic to our site

Am I on the right track?

Again, thanks a million for all this sage advice,

      Suz

I would convert it to a blog just to improve the appearance ... it looks very outdated as it is. A blog will also allow for better Adsense placement. I'm a fan of Woo Themes, but there are a lot of great premium themes out there.

This content on the site rocks!

The overal look, I agree with going to a WordPress theme, Elegant Themes is another inexpensive option, or you can look into E. Brian Rose's lattest WSO, it seems to hold a bit of controversy, but if I remember correctly there's like 70+ premium WordPress themes over there that have some 'loophole' that allows you to access all of them for pennies on the dollar. *I'm not an affiliate, nor have I gone beyond browsing the thread.

I bookmarked Maverick site, and when my eBook(s) are finished, I'll pay you a hell of a lot more than AdSense or Amazon to promote to that audience!

With that said, ClickBank, DigiResults, iDavi all have products that could easily be fitted into that niche and offer 50,75, and 100% commissions... so to second building a list and creating you're own products, I would shop for quality affiliate products for monetizing.

    Cool niche.

    All the Best,

Are you at all familiar with Bottom Line Productions?

They use the time tested method of offering just enough information to get you hooked and then offer the rest for a fee.

Instead of offering the entire contents of what is most likely the most obvious product to start with, namely the book(s) content, why not offer some teaser material and then the rest for a small price.

Additional new interviews could be bundled into new products.

Or, you could set up a membership area.

But, by all means, backup the content and then do a redesign starting with WordPress.
