Average Conversion Rates for your lists?

Hello everyone

A few weeks ago I started email marketing and offering a good product on my website as incentive to sign up to my list. I have a few subscribers so far and I have some quality follow-ups with good information/content that I send to them in 2-3 day intervals.

I'm going to try and sell something In the 5th-6th follow up..

My question is, how many conversions do you land with your lists? How much am I aiming at?

Thanks in advance

Nobody can accuse you of being in a hurry.

I'm only being cheeky: you may be right - this might work well for you. I promote one a little earlier, myself.

It depends on soooooo many different things ...

Traffic demographics (that's a big one), niche, their expectations, what you've shown them so far, what you sent them for signing up and whether it contained a promotion at all, whether they opted in through a squeeze page or a content-rich site or something in-between the two, whether they already know you're an affiliate, how closely targeted they are to what you're promoting (that's a huge one), what you've sent them in the intervening emails, what the open-rate is, whether it's a niche in which they'll probably be on 16 other peope's lists, and I'm only just warming up, here: I haven't even got as far as thinking about the product's sales page yet ... :p

Seriously, Laurent, nobody can begin to answer this without knowing soooooo much more ... but good luck with it, when you do your first promotion!

Noooo, it's not a stupid question at all, and it's totally understandable that you should ask, of course, and I should have said that above, sorry.

But I still have no idea what the answer is, and I instinctively think that if anyone imagines they do, it might be a good idea not to take too much notice of it anyway ...

The only stupid question is the one that you don't ask...

and BTW, you are doing better than a lot of people just sitting on there butts hoping that things will get better.

You are correct in the fact that you have to test.

My list in my niche will react to my promo's different than yours will in your niche.

It also has a lot to do with the relationship you are forging with your subscribers.

One thing I will say though is this; if you condition your list to receiving free stuff (content and products), they may just get used to it and resent the sale when it comes.

I know you have said you have a small list but you can test half of your list with a promo at email 3 against the promo at email 5/6.

It is a lot of work but your results will be the true answer.

Sorry I couldn't offer you a simple solution.

2 excellent points not enough list owners embrace. Interesting that it was made by a guy whose WSO I just today promoted to my own list. It's converting around 15% (not too shabby).

The relationship is so important for long-term success. It's a shame so many list builders in this niche (IM) drop the ball when they switch to actually marketing to their lists. No trust, no relationships, just BUY BUY BUY or get off my list! Hey, to each their own, but that has always struck me as storming the castle and burning the bridge over the moat on your way in.

The point about too much free stuff is well made, too. You're kind of conditioning or training your new list members in the first few emails you send out. If ALL you send it free free free, it can backfire. By around the 4th email or so, start working in recommendations on paid stuff... your own or affiliate, doesn't really matter. Then a mix of good free content and recommendations works best, in my experience.

I agree with zeus66 but my conversions are approximately 8 to 9% in all and larger on a free offer.

Hi Laurent, for a freebie-seekers list, conversions will be lower. I thought I saw you mention somewhere that your niche is skincare, but I may be hallucinating. Anyway, the point I wanted to make was, different niches have different conversions.

I know this isn't directly the answer you're looking for, but you might want to get in touch with some other marketers in your niche. You can swap notes and see what works and what doesn't - most people are heaps friendlier than you'd expect!

Also, conversions depend a lot on how much your list trusts you and would believe something you say. There's going to be a huge difference in conversions if I were to recommend something vs if Paul Myers or Willie Crawford were to recommend something!

Finally, I would sell to them quicker, but then I would try to also speed up the "like and trust" part of the sequence. People tend to lose interest fast. I've found that the first 14 days people are much more interested, and gradually their interest either fades, or they subscribe to a lot more lists, which means your emails get buried down and not seen as often!

    Hi Laurent,

The number one thing you need to consider when trying to figure out how good your list is going to convert is are you attracting buyers or freebie seekers to sign up for your list.

If the leads that you are attracting are just looking for free stuff then you may convert one occasionally, but most likely you are wasting your time.

If the people come to your site for example with the organic traffic through Google with the word "free mp3" or "mp3 info" you won't get many conversions with your list. But, if they come through a word like "buy Move Like Jagger mp3" or "what store carries Maroon 5 song Move Like Jagger" then your list will be highly converting.

Too many people focus on the mechanics of building a list when they should be focusing on getting someone who will buy to read their list.

The sale starts long before anyone reads your email.

    Terry
