Why don't you host your own email list software instead of using aweber etc

I am very noob in email list building. I always see people using aweber, mailchimp etc that can be expensive if you have tons of subscribers.

Why not host your mailing list software on your server instead of using aweber, etc?

I am sure there are some ready made softwares for that purpose?

1-Because doing so would be incredibly time consuming and time is more important than money.
2-You get what you pay for. If you pay nothing, don't expect much.
3-At some point you will get stumped and need some support. Kind of helps if you have a service that comes with a support desk.

I tried going the free route many times only to waste God knows how many hours of my life. Not worth it, IMO. Bite the bullet and get a quality autoresponder that is easy to use, tested and proven, and has the support you will at some point need.

      Very well stated.

I also tried the free and less expensive versions because even though I have money to spend, I was trying to keep costs as low as possible so that some day I could share what I learned with others.

I have found that their are several things that by paying a bit more (still reasonable), help you succeed much faster and easier.

Autoresponder, hosting, who you buy your domain from.

As a newbie you really need a lot of good customer support and I found that you just don't get it with the free or really cheap providers of any of these things.

Because weber is simple, easy and inexpensive to start up. As your list grows and you are making more money, the fee goes up too but it is the cost of doing business and saves me the hassle of doing it myself.

No different than when I started any other offline business, I hired employees to begin with even when I wasn't making any money yet. Then as I made more, I hired more employees.

I create businesses that I can manage, not a job I own that I have to do everything myself.

However, if using this other software as you mentioned was cost effective and someone knew how to do it easily, they might have a different opinion.

For someone starting out who does not know how to own and operate their own software, their time can be better spent building their business and just pay aweber the very small monthly fee.

Most hosts keep a stern eye on self hosted email responders, including us. You will find that sending out mass emails is very hard to be trusted to do. The commercial solutions usually have their own colo centers. There are several capable email auto responder solutions that are free or open source, but monitoring a client is too difficult. Most hosts use simple limitations.

Because mosts hosting companies limit amount of messages that can be sent out, plus there's a deliverability issue as well. Many of them will end up in spam folders instead of reaching the recipient. Aweber has a high deliverability rate.

Configuring a server for proper mailing is more difficult than you may think. Aweber has tweaked and tuned their servers for optimal deliverability and inbox rates. We'll worth the fee.

A large part of the tweaking and tuning really comes down to having the correct feedback loops setup. i.e. have abuse/postmaster address setup (AND CHECK THEM) - get reverse dns set on your mailserver - make sure your hosting provider doesn't throttle/limit outbound quantities/etc. There's a checklist of things to do in the phplist documentation. It will affect the amount of messages that show up in SPAM folders.

I do a fair amount of linux server configuration and have decided it's better to go with a dedicated mailing list provider and am gradually moving things over to mailchimp. I've started to think the risk of your hosting provider not liking it may be the biggest trump card. Of course, there's also the idea of needing to keep up with security updates so that your mailing list server isn't compromised by someone hocking v*agra...

With aweber/mailchimp/etc - it's their deal to keep up with all of the details.

Because most hosting/ISP limits their email sending rate. More than 500 emails per hour and you'll be kicked!
