I've written an e-book using neo-office word, but I want to be able to style it into a proper graphical book with backgrounds and make it look more like a magazine/programme than just text on a white background.

What's the easiest way to do this, whilst retaining hyperlinks etc?

Thanks

I don't know the neo office thing, but sounds like you need a template to start with.

Does this work like word where you can just insert or drag in your own graphics for particular chapters? Do you have an export to PDF option?

Neo-office is just an open office style suite for the mac.

It does let you drag in background etc but it appears quite limited. I can export to pdf yes, but it doesn't seem to have the styling abilities that I'm looking for.

      Mac user here.

Ok, so when starting a new document did it let you select some kind of template?

I typically use Iwork to create things. It lets you begin with the template and carry on from there.

I wrote an e-book a while ago and used Gimp, which is the free version of photoshop in my opinion essentially.
What i did was open a new project, then made the page as big as my eBook compiler software, then used one of the stock patterns as its called and filled the page. Then i imported into my eBook software.
I used an old off white colored pattern that looked like parchment.Actually kinda like the Kindle pages.
You could also check openoffice.org website for eBook templates,i have gotten at least a couple from there.

I don't know your specific software, but you should be able to make a nice looking ebook by using a graphic as a "cover" for the first page, making use of headers and footers on each page and inserting a variety of pictures/graphical elements throughout.

If you really want to make it hum, use a graphics program like gimp or photoshop to lay out each page exactly like you want it, save it as a .jpg and just make each page of the eBook a different .jpg. It will make it tough to edit, but it's a fair enough workaround to do some real fancy stuff if you're software choices are slim.

You can use OpenOffice.org to make your
styling look good the way you want it. I
think it should have more robust features.

Just did the whole thing in photoshop then uploaded to issuu.com which allows you to place link buttons over sections or text.

    Cheers folks.
