Getting serious about Affiliate Marketing - Newbie thought process

Here is my concept of how I envision my internet marketing / affiliate marketing business to work. I'd appreciate any feedback to help this newbie out. I guess more than anything, I just need validation that what I'm doing will have a high probability of paying off. Is my thought process correct? please suggest, add or take away from what I'm thinking so that I make it. thanks.

Here is my 6 step thinking process

Step 1: Build website with high quality orignal content (10 articles to start)
Step 2: Monetize the site with affiliate links
Step 3: Create a method to capture new visitor information by giving a free info product pdf if they give me their email for that specific list
Step 4: Focus on building FREE web traffic, making videos on you tube, posting on forums, yahoo answers, commenting on relevant blogs, learn free traffic system .com, directory submissions, article submissions,
Step 4a: Social marketing , (facebook mainly) has been what has been getting me traffic
Step 5: Build List: Continue to build, market and create relationship with list.
Step 6: continue to add high quality content

So that's what I've got on mind right now, I want to make sure I'm headed in the right direction with it. The next step after I get a grasp of the above 6 steps I'll move on to the following:

Step 7: Invest, learn and plan a google Pay per click strategy
Step 8: Research other methods of paid web traffic strategies. With fitness being my niche, I'm guessing PPC may not be too much of a good idea because there is a lot of competition.
Step 9: Keep learning other methods to improve list size and quality along with website traffic.

I'm choosing the Fitness/fat loss/muscle gain niche because I am a personal trainer and I already build a list from the offline source of meeting people in person. I'm passionate about fitness so I figured I might as well do something that compliments my job first. I have another idea to do this process with other websites. I want to do a website for helping other personal trainers build their business. Sounds simple, but I know it's not easy. Ive never been able to be focused or committed enough up until now.

Of course I want to repeat this process with other ideas for affiliate marketing and internet marketing website, but I want to make sure I'm walking down the correct path. Can you please help me out and make sure I'm traveling down the right path? If not please provide some suggestions. If I am going down the right path please add other ideas I can do research on. Also of what I've listed, is there anything I'm currently doing (or going to do) a waste of time or not BEST USE of time? Thanks in advanced

    Magix3d,

That is a GREAT plan. Awesome job.

Step 3: You can use any of the great autoresponder services that are out there to do that portion for you. Some are free. They make it really easy to do and you don't have to re-create the functionality.

Here are a few potentials for you:

    www.imnicamail.com
    www.aweber.com
    www.getresponse.com
    www.mailchimp.com

Just read the Terms of Use for all of them before choosing one to ensure it fits your niche.

    Di

P.S. You need to add Google Analytics onto your website to track where your visitors are coming from. It allows you to focus your targeting.

Interesting post, but the whole thing is not that easy though. There are more and more complicated steps to make $$$ a month. Like: setting a mindset, having a positive attitude and also the most important I think... setting up strong but achievable goals.

Wow you guys are great. Thanks a bunch!

akosblog, yeah I agree it's not that easy. It's a million small things that add up to success. I guess an achievable goal would be to get 100 visitors a day and 100 new people on my list in 90 days. In 6 months I will set $500 total generated income. I know their kind of small, but it's my start. I just wanted to make sure the proverbial ladder is leaning on the correct building, so to speak.

david james, Awesome idea! I'm going to do that!

Diana Heuser thanks for the resources, I'm vaguely familar with those sites. I just installed google anaylitcs, thanks! I now just need to spend sometime on those sites. I currently use icontact, will that do the same as those websites?

      thanks again

Thanks for the reply. I think you set solid goals... Keep up the good work!

One thing to add: Don't always think about setting achievable goals. Make some big ones as well. They will add some motivation in the beginning. [I set a goal a year ago about building a list. I expected 50 signups in a month, but I got 100 in 15 days... ]

        Anyway, good luck!

thanks alot everybody for the great tips. Going to do some research on adswaps. Right now I'm just trying to maximize free traffic and doing as much as I can to learn on that stuff. Also creating content is time consuming, but I enjoy it alot. Needless to say I'm overwhelmed.

I'm also launching a card game (shameless plug) on kickstarter called time flux card game ( can't post a link yet) and I'm Using some of my knowledge of affiliate marketing and social marketing to get exposure. I also have an idea to create an info product on "how to create a card game/board game" to sell on click bank after we launch in February.

So many ideas, so many things to learn. My head is going to explode, but i'm excited. I really appreciate this forum's support. I want to stay focused on a few things, but it's hard. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has this problem with ADD.

With all internet marketing it seems there are 2 aspects: creating/obtaining good content and learning the marketing side. Anyways, just thought I'd post an update.

Oh PS. Godaddy SUCKS FOR HOSTING for wordpress (well at least the shared one). super slow, too many errors.

Sounds like a really good plan. The key to success is taking action.

For the Youtube videos you should give advice on every video about things such as various weight lifting techniques, diet, cardio, etc. I would add to the title of each video "video 1 of 2" At the end of the video have some call to action such as "if you want to check out video 2 be sure to click on the link to my site." (of course have video 2 of 2 on your website. You'll be amazed how well this works)

Looking forward to hearing your success stories with your website...

I know articles are talked about alot in here, and I use them.

But for me and othere big guru marketers I use, you income will explode when you learn how to use Payperclick properly.

The big names I know use PPC, and also leverage of other peoples big lists for very nice monthly incomes. That is where the big money is. You just have to learn how to work smarter....not harder.

I know you want to be an affiliate, but since you are a personal trainer. I suggest you only start with affiliate marketing, while you are creating a blog and your own product.

As for your plan, it sounds good. What will make you stand out from the crowd is that you are actually in the field for real, and you can build a following with your blog. Many affiliates can't do this since they don't really know about the niche.

Your plan is good. Learn one traffic gen after another.

In other words, you have an edge.

Great steps. I would just change the order.

Put up a single squeeze page on yourdomain.com with an opt in box and offer the high value item for free there.

This way, you are getting the biggest bang for your efforts by building your business asset (your list) first.

That should take a few hours.

Then, add the blog with the valuable content to yourdomain.com/blogname

In the valuable blogs post, link your squeeze page in keywords inside the relevant words in the post.

Write articles and promote people to the squeeze page.

    Then do all the rest.

    A little tip here

Don't go all out and build a list by yourself

After you have a few subscribers (between 50 - 100) just go out and do AdSwaps

It is easier and more productive than to continually build a list all by yourself

I'd rather suggest solo ads until the list grows to 300-500. Hardly anybody wants to make swaps with a list of 100. Ask me how I know

Good plan. Once you have your opt in page and pillar affiliate promotion posts done, every article you publish should promote your list or your pillar posts by linking to them.

This is what I do and it works for digital and physical product niche sites. I just keep adding keyworded posts and I link to my affiliate promo posts and/or opt in pages. I do this over and over and over. The goal is as much traffic to pillar posts and opt in pages. Sales and subscribes add up daily.

Day 10: how to make a referral form and other technicals.

Learn how to make a referral form for our card game Time Flux. My goal is to figure out how to do that tommorow. Also how to create a form so that users can submit a testimonial. I want to set it up so that when I do an email with iContact they can just click on the link and have a page with a form to fill out along with a referral. When i figure it out I will update this post and do an update on Day 11.

Also on my list for tomorrow:
      -make a fitness video tomorrow
-Interview questions for Thomas & Greg what have you learned so far his weekend about the marketing and working on time flux (regular people/ competitive spirit)

I pulled out the affiliate links from this forum post, should I leave them out? I don't want to get moderated.

        Day 11: using iContact forms

I definitely not going to lie, I'm all over the place. I got a great tip, thanks Edmund Lee! I used iContact to send out to my list an email to promote Time Flux card game on kick starter. Since I figured out how to do that email collection form for a free download of the printable cyborg deck for Time flux we've been able to get 95 emails in the past 7 days. Pretty good stuff. I have to say that when you work with a team towards a common goal you can get a decent amount done.

iContact has a pretty cool way to track progress of opens, click thorough as well as other relevant information to internet and affiliate marketing. It's all pretty easy to use too! Learning how to market Time Flux has got me thinking about ways to build my list even bigger. Right now I have about 330, but I'm babbying it a bit because I don't want to be spammy. About 95% of these people I've physically met in person. I don't know why the whole rejection thing bothers me. It seems silly but I almost feel hurt to get unsubscribed. LOL probably my fear of rejection.
I'm definitely being pulled in different directions, but I'm doing my best to get focused.

Here's what's on my mind right now

My J.O.B. - personal training business
        Time flux card game launch
RyanSaplan.com list generating ideas - I want to create a 3-5 free auto responder course by making 5 videos. (does anyone know how to do a subscription based video info product?)
Pt service pro - a blog for helping other personal trainers
ryansaplan dot com / boardgamecardplayer blog it's just a hobby blog
I'll get it together guys, don't worry.

Day 12: Learning some technical stuff, how to use multiple domains for a single host

How to use multiple domains for a single host. I figured it out. Well I called support and they helped me. Blue Host is really replied with in 10 minutes, that was quick. A person corresponded pretty quickly with a few other questions. I had to change my name servers on GoDaddy.com to point to bluehost.
I also worked a little bit on our Time Flux website.
Not much today. I'm just proud that I got that technical thing done.
I also started a thread on board game geek about the story of time flux.

Fantastic Stuff !!! Glad you decided to follow through and already taking action

The plan looks good . You are going to need some leverage . You are going to need alliances and lots of it . You are going to need others to do the work for you and if you want to get growing fast you are going to invest in creating products that would truly transform people lives and build your list

I have a question ... What is your target ? How much do you want to make e.g 1K / month, 10k /month , 100k/month e.t.c. How many products or membership do you need to sell before you hit your target

Who you know is more important than what you know (although it helps to bring create quality life -changing information to the table , you are going to have raving fans )

    My suggestions:

    1. Contact successful marketers in your niche and keep doing interviews with people who has already establish website .Ask for an interview until you get it.You are positioning your self as an expert

2.Outsource all the tasks that are time consuming or that you tend to procrastinate on

    3. Leverage: 100 new people can be added your list within 4 days if you are willing to Invest in solo ads

Also contact successful marketers to do JV with them and ask to promote their products

4.Get a mentor to keep you accountable

    5. Start creating your product right now (Use a mind map first and then start working on it at least one hour a day until it is done )

I like how you have a journal for what you are doing each day .It is kind of emotional and shows commitment

    I like that .

I have learnt something from you . Keep the journal going .

    Much Love,

Solo ads fall in the same realm of ad swaps I think. I did a quick google search and found this link. How would you suggest I find a good solo ad source?

The current idea I have to build my list is to create a 3 free video personal training session auto-responder email. Where they basically opt-in to get 3 free video "sessions" with me on specific days and they get an email with the pre-recorded information. Basically, trade me your email and contact info for my video content sort of thing.

I started creating a product, but I found one that is pretty good already that is similar to what I wan to create. I figure why spend all the time creating a similar product when I can promote someone else's ? It would basically be a weight loss product (I know the market is saturated), the one I like is THE TRUTH ABOUT ABS. I went through it, and it's very rich and pays a very high commission. $39.95 is the product with a 75% commission. Is there any reason to create my own? what do you think?

At the end of the day , it is a business and a business must make money . Building and providing great content and following is great but it must lead to $$

Create your product say you say at $49.95 , all you need to do is sell 100 a month and you have your $5000 a month .

Alternatively , you can have a 4 month muscle gain or weight loss coaching program you charge $297 for the 4 months program, sell 17 of those and you got your $5000 a month income

When you say do interviews, do you mean to just get information or record them or something? How will doing interviews with marketers in my niche position me as an expert?

i mean do interviews like ophray winfrey .Do interviews with experts ask them intelligent questions and share that great content on your blog. You can also sell this interview series as a product because you have answered all the questions that people want to know when it comes to (insert name of whatever problem topics in the niche you choose to be involved in)

Solo ads fall in the same realm of ad swaps I think. I did a quick google search and found this link. How would you suggest I find a good solo ad source?

am not in the niche that you are in. so the radical honest truth is that I don't know from experience which is the best BUT i know reputable solo ad marketplaces where you can find build your list and do your solo ads in the muscle gaining niche or any other niche you choose to participate in

I should really charge for the information , i just shared with you. if you need me as a mentor to guide you through the process then check out the PM i sent and then we can work on a proper game plan to get you winning and keep you accountableI can't keep doing this with my time because you are not willing to be customer and certain information i can only give to customers. It helps a lot to know how much each visitor is worth on average before diving too deep into a site or affiliate project.

ex, $10 conversions on a site with a 10% conversion rate is about $1/view, so 1000 views per month would average about $1,000/mo. Obviously these are used cause they're nice round multiples of 10 but the math scales. This helps SO MUCH with paid traffic because it allows you to set a comfortable threshold to buy traffic with while still profiting.

I'm not really into affiliate marketing because IM in general is a secondary extension of my actual profession and is only a means of making money while doing what I love, but there are lots of people paying rent on affiliate offers so there's no reason you shouldn't be able to. The only problem with affiliate offers is that you've gotta be pretty comfortable with someone else's product and they've gotta have a bangup sales page or you're gonna have to carry their weight. 75% of 40 bucks is pretty good, but if you've got a fairly skeptical middle class audience, they're going to be reluctant to drop that much on a single purchase unless they strongly believe that it's worth more than it costs. being able to successfully diffuse skepticism is probably one of the top 10 skills that you can have when selling a product (but it comes with the territory of salesmanship)

          good luck,
          Adam

I learned how to put a PayPal Donation button on this blog. Now I can do this on all my blogs.

I got an email I read from Ryan Lee. He was promoting his Inner Circle program. It looks very interesting and probably well worth the money. I'm still mulling over the idea if I should buy it.

James Martell was pitching his PAD articles and Ben Settle was selling his EmailPlayers.com $97/mo program.

There is so many people out there trying to sell you stuff. So many ways to make money and so many gurus with information to sell - where should I focus my efforts?

The problem is that we are so very limited on time. With a full time job and time flux game project going on I have approximately 1.5-2 hours a day to spend on internet affiliate marketing.

There is some overlap with the time flux game because I'm helping with the internet marketing for that.

Learning the technical stuff is very time consuming. Creating content is time consuming too. Everything requires time.

I want to buy Ryan Lee's program but I'm still not sure what I would be paying for. I've skimmed through his sales letter.

I don't want to read it in depth because I fear I will be mesmerized into buying it. Lol.

I just got to take this one day at a time. One lesson at a time.

Great job! You're on the right track and you have a very good plan!

I can see that you're going to be a huge success already once you start putting this into action, and that leads in to my only advice that I have for you...

Make sure that you associate time goals for each of these projects. So for building a website, when do you expect to complete that, how about the articles?

Then you want to make sure you have a daily list of goals, or to-do's for each day. Post 10 forum comments, blog comments, etc., write 1 article, etc., etc.

    Great job!

Some suggestions to a really good start:

    1. Privatize your videos and require membership to view them. Outsource everything else or you won't have time for anything else.
    2. Constantly tell your offline visitors what you've added to your website so they'll be motivated to repeatedly visit your site (better get some biz cards!).
    3. Look up PURLS and use them to get even more offline customers onto your site.
    4. Do you train people on a regular schedule? Get a calendar on site and announce your events. Personalize it so that logged in customers see their personal schedule only.
    5. Set up a forum so that people can share their experiences (ie. their moans and groans). Moderate it to keep people in positive spirits.

Oh, and sell a fitness mobile app while you're at it. People love that stuff. In fact, if you stay focused on your stuff, you won't have to sell other people's stuff and you can appropriately drop it from your plans.

Those are just a few more bumps along a successful road you may already be on. I strongly suggest that you merge your offline and online activities since the bulk of your strategies are online only.

    Good luck!

Today is a family day so there's not much time to work on much today, but lots of time to think as we commute for my wife's birthday dinner for the evening.

Time Flux : origins of war
On kickstarter.com our $5,000 of funding ends. We are barely over the 50% mark.

In about 10 days we've been able to grow our interest list for the free downloadable cyborg deck to 125. We have 36 pledges. We need to figure out how to convert more of these 125 people in to pledges. We are sending out an email on Tuesday to get referrals and offer a new downloadable deck.

We also have a email being sent to the store owners where Thomas did demos at. A special offer to them is to double product.

Thinking about my video for personal training
I bought a web cam today. Here is my first post with it.

    Goals for tomorrow:

-Find a resource for providing restricted video content for online video training
-Rehearse and record 2 video sessions for my video info product lead generator online personal training

Day 17: Learning how to create a lightbox squeeze page and creating good content

What a productive day. Here is what I've done
Started creating some good content that I'm excited about.
Article for ryansaplan.com "The fastest way to lower your body fat % percentage and get lean"

Article for personaltrainingservicepro.com "Getting your personal training business organized"
      -started a letter to visitors

Fiddled with a membership plugin for Wordpress so I can create members-only content. Didn't get very far, but I'm proud I got started on it.

Since creating a squeeze page for Time Flux Game startup we've been collecting an average of 12 emails a day. Or in this case 133 emails. My other lists don't have a squeeze page. In the same time period we collected 133 emails, I've collected one.

There is no reason why I can't do the same on my other websites. This requires some technical know-how and research is required.

I reviewed a list I was on for a product lanch called 24/7 fat loss. I was looking at their emails and seeing how they worded them. I was trying to get an idea of how these guys marketed.

I also learned today what a light box form or pop up light box squeeze form is.

I'm getting frustrated trying to learn it.

There's a really great wordpress plugin for email opt ins that works like a lightbox called popup domination or something like that. Some sort of CB product, not too expensive. I'm not trying to plug this product, I'm just throwing it out there.

This is a solid plan you've got overall, but just be sure not to make your plan TOO in depth. When you're worrying about multiple things you can get carried away and not actually do the simple stuff that makes you the money.

One thing I'd suggest is to rinse and repeat this process using different types of monetization methods:

    1) Use information based websites with high quality content and monetize with high cost per click Adsense keywords.
    2) Get into a network like share a sale or commission junction that sells physical products. OR just plane old amazon. Then build a site that has a more robust ecommerce feel to it and use a lot of images to attract some image search
    3) Then get into CPA offers using search traffic, and media buys.

There's so many options out there and potential for scaling. Just find a simple process that works for each type and go with it.

One of the greatest internet marketers that I know once gave me good advice:

He said that if making money with adsense, cpa offers, and affiliate sites is great, and a lot of people do it for a full time income. But if you really want to bring your income to the next level and distinguish yourself, you really need to build a list and create your own product launch.

Once you find success in simple methods, don't be scared to really utilize your knowledge to create your own products and bring it to the next level.

Maybe it's the caffeine, but I had a sort of "ah-ha" moment. I overheard a discussion at work about having a job that doesn't pay well or have a job you love and get paid less. "Paid well" was depicted as 75k per year. It made me think for a moment about what I've got going on in my life and made realize a few things about why I don't really want to get promoted. High paying jobs require a lot of time commitment. A commitment of time that would prevent me to work on this internet affiliate marketing venture and The Time flux card game I'm developing with friends. The idea of having a high paying job sounds great right now because we are struggling to make ends meet, however we've always barely made it. Meaning, when we make more money we spend more money and we get caught up in the same predicament. In my current situation I'm a low level employee who is paid based on production. I have the flexibility to work as much or as little as I want but still make a decent enough income to make ends meet. Luckily I have access to a computer that allows me to work on my internet marketing.

If I were to take a job or promotion that paid more it would just get be caught up in the rat race that Rich Dad talks about. I keep saying I will take a promotion if it is offered, but I keep telling my wife I don't really want to take it. It'd difficult when you have a 4 year old child and a baby on the way. My wife is hoping it is a girl.

Today I posted a picture on my start page (and my WF thread) of something I need and really want. I want a bigger home. My current living situation makes it so my son can't have have his own room. Having a packed master bedroom isn't an ideal idea for any young couple. I listened to a podcast about a week ago of the Affiliate Buzz with James Martel. He refreshed my memory of the power of writing down goals. You increase your probability of accomplishing your goal by 1000% if you write them down. This is something I've gotten away from. Also, the idea of a start page where you see your goal everyday. A fancy car, cool gadget or coveted toy. At my age these things no longer interest me as much. Having a bigger home for my family to live is now a priority. It is my next dream. My next focus. My goal is to be able to afford a home pictured above so my family can live and grow comfortably in.

I don't think I've felt like this for a while. Where I felt serious or this committed to something outside of my profession. Anything less than success is not an option. I must succeed or I will continue to run in the wheel of the rat race. I don't want to do that anymore.

No matter how much you love your job our time is finite. There is only so much time in a day to do anything. Instead of earning an hourly wage, I'm committing to building something great. Building something awesome that will reap the financial benefits that allows to me to accomplish this first goal buying a bigger home. And I will do it with internet marketing.

The huge gigantic elephant that is internet affiliate marketing is a big thing to consume and learn what is necessary to know. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.

Day 19: Job promotion, new domain, ryan lee ideas, internet business mastery.

Listened to the online business, internet business, Internet Business Podcast, Resources and Community today. got some really good stuff. Some key takeaways were about picking your niche. A constant theme about them is choosing something you are passionate about.

Ryan Lee's email was centered on making small goals, here's a quote from his email today

        "
        • Buy a domain name
        • Setup a Facebook fanpage
        • Create a twitter account
        • Write one blog post
        • Write one article and submit it to one directory
        • Record a 2 minute video and upload it to youtube
        • Send one potential JV an email
        • Submit a request to be a guest blogger for one blog
        • Post 3 replies on discussion forums in your market
        • Signup with a Clickbank account
        • Hire someone on fiverr to install your blog for $5
        • Post feedback for your product idea on your Facebook page"
I'm happy that I got most of that stuff done already.

I got a great idea to make icontact videos on how to use them. The problem is finding best use of time.

I got a good domain I think www.learnaffiliatemarkets.com for my blog. I recently moved so it's not up.

I'm getting promoted at my job.

This idea has been done thousands of times. Something needs to be added... to make it fresh and new. You very nicely laid it out and it seems good on paper... but something needs to set you (or your website/blog or whatever) apart from the thousands of others trying to do the same thing as you, similar to you. I hope this makes sense.

I was thinking the same thing. SO many people are trying to do the same thing. However, I'm wondering if the problem is follow through?

I agree with you very much though. Are you a believer in baiscs? It's like that saying, "blocking, and tackling win games." Or "lay ups win games."

Back to the list building question I agree with the Ad Swap. Once you hit the 100+ benchmark, do adswap. You can build your list quicker!

I use icontact. Im very familiar with the software so I'm comforatable with it. I heard aweber is good too. A lot of the lists these guru guys use aweber.

Personall I like icontact because for a list of 250 you only have to pay $10

I'm want to send you an affiliate link so you can sign and I can earn a commission, but I'll tell you the way to do. I'll pm you my affiliate link in case you want to, but here it is.

Go to commission junction cj.com and and sign up. Sign up as an affiliate then you'll get a discount for being affiliate when you use the service. I'm not exactly sure what it is since I've been using icontact before I got approved to be an affiliate. I"m waiting to get a response.

      I hope this helps.

I bought a program I heard about on Today on affiliate marketing by Russ Ruffino. It was the exact type of program I was looking for. I'm very cheap, especially since I haven't generated any money yet. This was the perfect program for me.

How to generate traffic cheaply and effectively was a strategy I was looking for. The short amount of research I've been doing on free traffic has got me running in loops. It's become more time consuming (which I don't have a lot of).
He offers a 60-day money back guarantee and I can already tell I’m probably not going to ask for a refund. He’s put a lot of work into this thing. The first video I watched was 37 minutes and there are dozens more. The name of his info product is Endless Traffic Tap.

Ugly ads that either standout or blend in is the most valuable thing I’ve learned so far. That will help with Time Flux : Origins of War (startup card game) that I’m doing the internet marketing for.

Thanks in advanced
you are running on the right path...this is the exact path to success...initially it will take some time but results will be positive...well...best of luck....

Day 29: Motivated by affiliate marketing today.

I was listening to affiliate marketing today on the way to work on their newest podcast they were discussing about payper call and mobile advertising. It was interesting to know that companies are willing to pay $2-$10 or more for generating a lead.

I finally learned how to make money on mobile phone advertising. Justin Elenburg was the guy who was on the podcast

The stuff I learned from Russ Ruffino on traffic is something I want to implement on www.timefluxgame.com so that we can market the game.

After listening to that podcast I got this great idea to do some presales on our website so I txt'd thomas for the EIN number to the business. He called me and he started to get interested in making that infoproduct for "how to publish a card game." I told him about Russ Ruffino's launch, about how he's giving out prizes. I was wondering if we could get organized enough to do that.
