Yo, Marketers! What's Up with the Mug Shots?

Earlier tonight I visited a giveaway page for an upcoming giveaway event that I was invited to participate in, but a funny thing happened on the way to the forum (wasn't that a movie?)...

I looked at the photos of other "marketers" who had already committed and I decided to decline the invitation.

Why?

A large percentage of them looked like they were using a photo taken straight out of a police line up! I didn't want to be associated with them. They didn't look trustworthy, they looked shady. They didn't look like experts, they looked like fakers.

While it's true that you can't always judge a book by it's cover, it's also true that more often than not, success looks more like success than like a drunk being booked for public intoxication.

My 2 cents: Get a decent picture taken, or don't use one at all. Just don't put a "criminal likeness" on your marketing efforts because using a mug shot is surely scaring away potential buyers. It just doesn't look professional. It reminds me of a guy in a trenchcoat standing in an alley going "Psst. Hey buddy..." ...while trying to sell fake Rolexes to people passing by.

    Hi Dennis,

You put it very aptly the essence. It occurred to me... perhaps they have not heard about how to make a positive first impression?

    Regards,

    I agree wholeheartedly!

But 1 thing I'd like to point out Dennis and it's not meant to be harmful, but a grown man holding a puppy in his picture doesn't give me the impression of a professional marketer. Just my opinion.

ha ha - and I'm not marketing here either.

      Besides, chicks dig the puppy.

I think a grown man holding a pooch shows kindness and all sorts of positive traits:p

I know chicks dig puppies, but as you and I both know, IM is predominantly a male oriented career path.

BTW, my comment was meant to be half serious and half tongue in cheek.

Read "Marketing to Women." Then apply the concepts to your sales process, and watch what happens with sales to both women and men. That little exercise will quickly disabuse you of the notion that appealing to the usual perception of a male audience is a Good Idea.

As far as being half "tongue in cheek," note the smiley at the end of my previous comment.

I beg to differ. A very large segment of my members are female. Now, it may be that in my case the stats are skewed because they are attracted by my dashing good looks, luxurious beard, and raw sexiness.

Hey .. don't talk about the Hamster King like that.

I'd rather see his mug on a sales page any day over a scantily clad woman with large breasts. Now, if he only had a puppy ....

Kevin, it's GREAT! Go for it! You could promote any dental care product and go with the "this is what will happen to you if you don't use ___ " angle. Watch the cash come pouring in. Don't forget my cut.

                Hi Kevin,

I can understand the women who are your members, Kevin. It is impossible not to love such an attractive guy. If I were a woman, I'd lie at your feet.

Anyway, just curious, Hollywood has not been contacted you yet for a major role? I don't know the size of your member's list, but after a good film appearances, you would have more fans surely.

                Cheers,

You boys are funny! I'm new to this forum... and I kinda liked the puppy!

I think mug shots are pretty odd myself and do find myself interested in interesting photos.

I think people want to be associated with real people. Pictures that depict sensitivity, normality as well as a equal level of professionalism is essential. The monkey suit thing is old fashion.

The issue with many affiliate marketers is they like to think being an affiliate marketer you can look and dress how you want in the comfort of your own home, even though you can do what you want the problem with this mindset is they actually show it off as you just described and can have a negative effect on how people perceive them and their overall audience they attract.

    Cheers,

    Dan
