Beware of private messages soliciting money

We got a bunch of reports today about a member from Ethiopia asking for people to send him money via Western Union.

Please don't.

You may feel like being charitable, and that's a good thing. I don't think random strangers asking for funds to be sent Western Union like this is quite the best way to go about it.

We had a member here not long ago from Nigeria (King Shiloh) who played the "good guy" role convincingly in the public sections of the forum. Because he said the "right words," he was getting pretty much everything he wanted for his business paid for by members he approached behind the scenes. Quite a lot of it, as it turned out.

Today's gentleman had all the right lines in place. He was looking for someone to "JV" with, since he can't get Paypal or Clickbank accounts in Ethiopia. He was supposedly willing to do all the work, but needed $60 - $80 by Monday to cover his rent.

Potential payoff, with only a small personal loan needed up front. And a sob story about needing to make the JV work to get to the US to go to college here.

Could it be true? Possibly, but I'd bet real American cash money against it. Every instance of this sort of plea I've seen here over the years has turned out to be fraud.

Please do not encourage these people. We have enough problems with them now, and every person who falls for their bogus entreaties adds to the incentive to tell their "friends" about the marks who fell for their game.

Agreed. If you are truly feeling generous and you want to donate to somebody in need, please do so at:

RAOP - Restoring Faith in Humanity, One Slice at a Time

Something as simple as a pizza can really lift someone's spirits. It just lets them know that somewhere, someone is willing to help.

I know first hand. I've donated quite a few pizzas to people on there, and I also received one when I too, was down on my luck.

PS: I have absolutely no affiliation with RAOP. I just figured of all the places to try and get some exposure to the site, surely this community is amongst the best of them.

There is no greater feeling than knowing that you really, TRULY helped someone.

And on the lighter side of things, it sure is a hell of a lot cheaper than a fraudulent JV! haha!

    Stay awesome my friends.

Who comes up with these ideas. I guess I am just not creative enough and maybe that is why at the end of the month, my bank account is always at about the same level. The thing is that if they would use all that energy for a positive endeavor, they could be quite wealth. But instead they use it to scam people. And that never leads to passive income, you got to keep doing it daily.

      Haha.

I was about to make a post about inappropriate behavior, but I see I am in an elite group having been asked for help the way I was.

      No, I don't do JV's with people I don't know. I don't do Western Union.

And Paul, just so you know this was a second account opened by this member (I was told in an email from them) as the first one was banned apparently.

Let me know if you need details.

      Thanks.

Years ago I had a neighbor in her 80's with dementia who took out a reverse mortgage on her house and lost it all to those scumbags.

Nigerian internet scamming is in every imaginable niche. I used to run into these guys on arachnid message boards (selling live spiders from Africa), and once I got big into eBay, a few tried stealing my items.

I've had it a few times where they pose as US citizens, and if you don't read carefully, it can come off as quite convincing.

Bottom line is... don't send a dime to anyone you don't know. If a well-known person sends you an e-mail, soliciting cash, cross-reference the e-mail address and carefully read the e-mail for spelling and grammar errors, letters that should be capitalized but aren't...

    Paul,

Be aware that I have it in back channels that he has a new account and is pushing his game again.

This time he is trying to get private email addresses from members, so he can bait the hook in a private in order to avoid the Report button.

Yup, because I got a PM from the person's new account. Banning apparently wasn't enough incentive to knock it off.

That small loan would multiply fast if he got more than one person suckered into it.

      Tim,

We can learn a lot from these guys that can be used in more legitimate ways. Here's the text of one copy of the PM he was sending:
I'm sending you this message because I have read many of your threads including this one ([deleted]) and I thought we can help each other. This PM is a bit long so bear with me

I don't know where to start from but I'm 19 and my real name is [deleted] and I'm currently located in Ethiopia. I use '[deleted]' as a pen name on WF and the IM niche because I don't currently want to be called an IMer. My plans are too many -I'm going to go to the US in two months and study Computer Engineering, Business and Music and want to become a famous hiphop artist, guitarist, Hollywood business man, martial arts master etc etc.

Today, I'm sending you this message because I got some trouble and want a way out. I've been into internet marketing for 2 years but can't make any money except some measly money from oDesk.

This is because I'm stuck in a catch 22 situation. Due to my current location I can't access affiliate programs, CPAs or paypal payments online. But because I'm going to go to the US for college, I thought I won't have problem accessing the programs. But to get accepted to a college, I need to show at least $10,000 - $15,000 as financial statement.

And I can't get that amount of money because I can't earn online. Then I thought about getting an LLC (Limited Liability Company) in the US to be able to signing up with no problem (legally as if I'm in the US) but that costs at least $1,000 internationally (Bizfilings.com). And to get that money, I decided to team up with other people who are eligible to sign up to those programs but I failed to find a person whom I trust. I found someone on oDesk but he became uninterested after we agreed to split commissions 50/50.

So now I'd like you to help me on two things:

I want you to team up with me: Because you are in South Africa, you are eligible to receive money through Paypal and sign up on Clickbank. So, I will set up a MMO niche site and two other niche sites and promote your affiliate links. Then when I make sales, we will split the profit 50/50. I have the knowledge and I know some cool techniques that work effectively -- I just couldn't execute my. (After you reply to me, I will tell u my plans in detail.)

Right now, I'm in a severe problem and I'd simply like to ask you to help me right now. I need $60 - $80 for tomorrow to pay for rent and pay back some debt. From where I am, I can't receive money through paypal so please send me that amount through Western union. (I will tell you in detail what my problem and explain to you my situation in another PM because PMs are limited to 5,000 characters per PM.

My plan is first to build a list by giving away an ebook guide that I'm completing. I will give it away on Warriorforum, on my blog and through a series of quality guest posts. Then I'll complete the other 'tools and resources' book that I started and will give it away on Warroom for instant exposure. There are also other things I planned -- I will tell you my plan in detail after you reply to me BTW.

We may become good friends. We may even end up becoming JV partners and launching products and WSOs.

My real Facebook is: Welcome to Facebook - Log In, Sign Up or Learn More[deleted] and you can be my friend there provided that you won't talk any IM there

I will send you another message explaining my situation.
Interestingly, this guy either found a way to pay for War Room membership, or someone bought it for him.

Anyway... look at the elements of the message. He paints himself as being disadvantaged through no fault of his own (location is everything), and willing to work to get out of his situation.

He shows ambition, and implies a real motive to make the project work in the long term. I mean, if he really wanted to go to college in the US and needed this to work to get the money, who would think he'd just walk away?

He offers rebuttals to objections without them ever needing to be raised. Good copy technique.

He set the scene for what looks to be his real goal - the immediate money - by offering the incentive of a longer term benefit. Also good copy. Unfortunately, it looks like his skills have been applied to a less than scrupulous end. Either that, or he just fell into the pattern of a bog standard con by accident.

I consider the latter to be more than a little unlikely...

He's got a story that's tailor made for his target market. (If I'm right about this being a con, the word 'target' is a bit more accurate than usual.) Either way, it's guaranteed to attract the attention of exactly the kind of person he's looking for.

The challenge he's facing is that he wrote this same thing to a bunch of people, none of whom he apparently knows at all. He also screwed up his personalization, as the individual he sent this copy to lives on a different continent than was mentioned in the PM.

      Lesson: Watch the details.

Another problem: He doesn't want anyone mentioning the deal in public. Keeps the marks from talking to each other and finding out what's going on. I can't immediately think of any reason anyone would add that restriction if there wasn't something hinky afoot.

You can learn from anyone. The trick is turning the lessons to good purpose.

      Bill, et al,

      Send me that username, please.

Well, for me, I don't donate money to people I don't know, only to people I personally know. At least this system helps me not being scammed.

It's sad really, for hard working nigerians who aren't scamming because they get bad name from a few nigerian scammers. BTW, I get emails from them everyday, the last email I read, the scammer was pretending to be Gaddafi's son. I also got emails from them pretending to be FBI, even president Obama.

I remember King Shiloh. I thought he was alright. Makes me sad that he wasn't, but then, scamming people is a way of life for the Nigerian people, just like piracy is a way of life for the people of Somalia. I guess what I'm saying is that I just can't judge these people. Their culture is different from mine, so their rules and perceptions of right and wrong are also different from mine.

Still, that's no reason for us to just fall for scams. We need to educate ourselves and others to prevent that sort of thing from happening, and Paul's post does just that.

Thanks for the heads up Paul. I get the feeling we're going to be seeing a lot more of this in the near future, especially with Ken's successful fundraiser. Some dishonest people will look at that and think "I want some of that", and will likely work on spinning some sob story to get some donations, only to never be heard from again.

Keep sharp Warriors, there's a storm up ahead.

Censoring a person from your view just because they say something that you find offensive is a very short-sighted thing to do. Jill is often an insightful person, and she's not the only person who would have made a snarky response to the person she was quoting. I had half a mind myself to say something similar.

@Kay: I know that isn't the point of this thread, but it was MY point. People often make the mistake of judging entire cultures of people based on the actions of a few people, and I feel that is a mistake that needed to be addressed.

You're right though. We need to be keeping our eyes sharp for individual people who are out to rip us off.

                Joshua,

It's not a matter of judging cultures. It's a matter of math.

Nigeria and the Ivory Coast are extremely active nations for online scams. The vast majority of business online from those countries, at least as done by individuals, is pure scam. Refusing to do business with unproven entities from those areas isn't any form of judgement other than simple, rational self-defense.

Nigeria is a country of some 130 million plus individuals. Within that group is a relatively small sub-culture who believe that stealing from white westerners is not only ethical, but something to be applauded. Or at least that's the historical rationalization.

A portion of that sub-culture is extremely active online. They use various means of automation and practiced scams to garner huge sums of money from gullible people online.

It's a very small percentage of the population, and certainly not representative of Nigerian culture(s) as a whole. That doesn't make it any less valid to assume you're better off refusing to accept orders from or do business with random Nigerians online.

Ummm... The piracy he's talking about occurs on the high seas, not the Internet. Real boats, guns, etc.

Your point is valid, certainly, but when you limit the discussion to online activities, it seems to be the case that the overwhelming majority of people doing anything money-related online from Nigeria are running some kind of scam.

Of course, that says nothing about the 130 million Nigerians who aren't doing anything like it, but within a very limited scope... Well, he's probably right.

Yes, there is a need for it. I was surprised to find a PM from someone I consider to be pretty intelligent that was asking if the guy was permanently banned, because they wanted to help him out.

Sad really, that was the last time I send any money to anyone on this forum unless they fall into the same category as Kim and Ken.

I'm not fussed I lost that money, it makes no difference to me. I'm more annoyed I was mug enough to think he needed it and I'm even more annoyed that if someone genuinely needs it, I won't know one way or the other now and the money will stay with me.

The email I got was specifically to me, not the same as Pauls, he even sent a message first asking if it was ok to send me a short PM, indeed I have spoken to the person a number of times, by PM and in threads. Although I was suspicious, he seemed a genuine person.

                  Yeah same.

                  I got this first....

                  "Hey Johnny,

Followed by the request as posted above by Paul. Im sure you guys probably got the same thing right?

I am by nature a trusting person, not willing to pre-judge anyone by their race, color, or place of origin.

That being said, this discussion reminds me of the controversy surrounding "profiling" by law enforcement here in the states. "Profiling", for those unaware, is the practice of biasing your suspicions of a person according to his race or other factors that aren't germaine to the issue - for instance, if most robberies in a neighborhood are believed to be committed by African-Americans, law enforcement might give closer scrutiny to African-Americans than to other groups when a robbery has been committed.

This can certainly be "overdone" and thereby wrong - for example, "There was a new robbery committed tonight, so let's round up all the young Afro-Americans we see on the streets and interrogate them". This is obviously wrong-headed.

However, if I had a farm and my cows were being killed, mostly by mountain lions, would I go out looking for wolves? No, I would first suspect mountain lions! Common sense must prevail if I want to protect my cows.

Look at it another way - If I told you there was a man in a monkey suit shooting everyone he encountered... Yes, you have no proof that anyone in a monkey suit is dangerous, you have only my word (anecdotal evidence, much like what is being conveyed in this thread). But if you then saw a man in a monkey suit coming your way, would you not be wary? Any wise man would.

I'm not saying we should distrust every Ethiopian or Nigerian that comes our way, but if a person behaves in a way that makes you a little suspicious that a scam is underway, AND he happens to be Nigerian, is it wrong to be wary?

Some people just don't get that.

@Paul: I didn't say that one would be judging a culture by refusing to do business with high-risk geographical areas, and if that was implied, I apologize for the misunderstanding. I also acknowledge that scammers in Nigera and elsewhere are a minority, and do not reflect anything on the majority of the population. I was simply trying to make the point that, as an individual, not a business, it is wrong to pass judgment on people or cultures based on their actions, when you do not see the world from their point of view.

And regarding the whole ignoring Jill issue, you're right. It is a personal matter, and was for the individual, until they made a point of making a public comment about it. That, IMHO, made it open for public commentary. And while there are perfectly valid reasons for adding a person to your ignore list, I do not consider taking offense to a relatively gentle rebuke, aimed at a completely different user, to be one of them.

However, I'm not the person who is doing the ignoring, so perhaps I shouldn't judge them.

Based on the responses and "thanks" awarded in this thread, I can see that my clumsy words have muddled my good intentions, and once again, I have made a complete idiot of myself.

    I'll be quiet now.

Joshua, I am honored that you may have found something I posted somewhere along the way helpful or insightful.

I just discovered TiffLee and I share the same birthday - and perhaps she is upset I got there first.

I honestly have no idea what that is about, but as Paul says it is her choice to do so and I'd be crazy to expect everyone to like me or agree with me or even listen to me (sometimes I can't stand me).

So again, thanks for your kind words above.

When I got the pm it was from "another username" that he had made earlier and "forgot about" until later. He said he'd contacted another warrior (who I happen to know well enough to pm back and forth to at times) and that he had been reported and his other account deleted. He asked if he could send me his information and if I would promise not to report him if he did. That made me curious so I said okay - then pm'd the other warrior he'd mentioned and asked them if they'd received a pm. After chatting with that person a little, I was ready for the pm and was pretty sure I already knew what the message was going to be. Since nothing ever came back, I just figured he got caught (again). Makes me wonder how many usernames this person actually has here. I know of at least 2 now.

Funny... I didn't get a pm, but in regards to King Shiloh ... I always felt that he was a bit much, but never really thought of him as a scammer. Did wonder where he went.

There was another Nigerian just before Shiloh that made a big splash in the website flipping arena and just as his biz seemed to be taking off, he quickly disappeared as well.

I think many here like to give anyone, including those from Nigeria a chance and the benefit of the doubt, but I have to admit that I am always more skeptical when dealing with anyone from Nigeria due to the large amount of scams coming from there.

I know exactly who you mean and he did try much the same thing with me. To Richard's point, the whole lead-up was so smooth I didn't suspect a thing even after he made a request for money.

He spent months befriending me first so that when he asked I really did think he had a financial problem. He even had an explanation for why he was supposedly making so much flipping sites yet didn't have access to the few hundred he needed just then.

My background is bank management with regular training in fraud and money laundering and I still didn't think anything of it until a bit afterwards. Fortunately, because of that training I also never lend money to anyone other than a close friend or family member so he didn't get a dime but I now understand just how easy it would be to fall for such a scheme.

Oh Dear Lord...I hope this does not hurt people from other African countries, most of us are legitimate people trying to earn some money by pursuing our internet dream, not scamming people....
As an African I would never entertain an email, pm or whatever soliciting for cash, no matter where they were from.
We are such a nice tight knit community here on the forum we are naturally aware of who needs our help, they themselves never have to ask for it, there is always someone here on the forum who knows the situation and can and does let the rest of us know. So people please don't fall for anyone who can't post openly if they are in trouble.

Shiloh never got by my radar. He pm'd me once about something - I can't remember what it was but it wasn't money. The only thing I remember is that he ticked me off real hard and called him out right then as a Bull s***er. He never approached me again. About the time he started posting about his deceased father I knew he wasn't long for the forum.

It wouldn't surprise me if we are recycling a few of these scammers in here.

Wow also a little surprised about king Shiloh, I say a little because unfortunately I live in Africa have dealt with hundreds of Nigerians personally my mother in law works in Nigeria and the golden rule is " never let your guard down when dealing with an East African".

I am actually very disappointed now that I think about it more, because it is such a waste... Nearly 2 years over 1000 posts and he had to climb a massive hurdle of being from Nigeria, yet he had it as his location which I though was his way of proving the stereo types wrong.

Surely his warrior forum account alone would have been worth far more by just keeping a solid reputation and trying to make it in this business. Silly thing to do...

    Typical 419 Scammers BS story.

Watch out for these lads, they'll lie, steal make up fake sob stories, do whatever it takes to steal your hard earned money. They'll even go as far as to warn you to look out for other scammers, thus gaining your trust because they themselves cant POSSIBLY be a scammer if they acknowledged that scammers exist.

It's sad to say, but people like this make it hard for many people to trust ANYBODY from Nigeria.

On some of the 419 forums I frequent, I've seen scammers try to take somebodys money that was set aside to pay for their dying daughters cancer treatments, with well wishes towards the daughter and promises of millions in a few days.. It was of course set up to see how far they would go, but common - really?

It is near impossible to address some of the posts here. Nevertheless, I must say I am quite taken aback with some of the focused vitriol at a group of people based on the behaviour of individuals that claim rightly or wrongly to come from a certain part of the world, without any way of proving if they indeed come from that part of the world.

However putting that aside, some folks are obviously susceptible to major psychological biases, which takes the form of exaggerating the negatives over the positives. Someone even had the nerve to talk about numbers, in reference to this individual scam artist and his comrades. Yet the question holds- What statistics have you undertaken to arrive at a so called "the number confirms" hypothesis of Nigerians, Ethiopians or Africans. Have you even tracked the sources of all these scams.

Geez this whole misinformation is similar to one peddled by others caricaturing the IM profession as a bunch of scam artist no gooders. Are we supposed to accept and believe this? Of course not. In reality they are a whole lot of people within IM that are doing good and adding value and the same applies to the Nigerians, Ethiopians etc.

It is simply unfair to jump to silly speculations without concrete analysis of the matter at hand. Are there some from Nigeria, Ethiopia etc that take advantage of others? Of course there are. Whether we like it or not bad folks come in different shapes and form, and exist in all part of the world.

The answer to all this is quite simple, you should never trust anyone on face value that you do not know from physical proximity. This is why most businesses operate with contract enforceable by the rule of law. If someone comes to you telling you about their plight, explain to them that they are responsible for their own life, and should look to find solutions to their problem. Of course you can give advice where applicable. There is almost never any need to part with your wallet. In my book sound practical advice, will go a long way compared to any monetary solution anyway.

He said he was from Ethiopia, his Facebook page said he was in Ethiopia.

I went to Western Union and sent money to him in Ethiopia.

What other conclusion do you expect me to come to?

        anthonyb,

Ummm... His IP is consistently from EthioTelecom. There is other information confirming his location, but the killer is Richard's comment that the location he asked the money to be Wester Union'd to is... Ethiopia.

As far as the math of the rest of the discussion, and the likelihood of Nigerian requests being scams... Just do some digging. I can assure you, I have no problem with people from Namibia, Kenya, Niger, Zimbabwe, or any of the many countries in Africa that don't show this pattern of con artistry.

Except for Cote d'Ivoire, of course. And sometimes Sierra Leone. Both very small nations, close to... guess where? Nigeria!

There is a reason most online payment processors won't offer access to people in Nigeria. And it ain't bigotry. It's simple math...

We have what we call Rule #1 here, and it's been stretched as far as it needs to be regarding KS.

I don't see where pointing out the details is productive, frankly.

I wouldn't even have mentioned his username if I thought it had any connection at all to his real name. If I recall my music trivia correctly, King Shiloh is the name of a roots reggae band that's very popular in Africa and Europe.

Technically Bill, Rule #1 applies to Warriors, Gurus and Gods, right? And KS is no longer a Warrior, as far as we know, nor a Guru or God.

That is not correct. It applies to everyone. It was originally intended, in fact, to stop abuse of people who weren't members or regular posters and were being attacked in the forum.

          Paul

          Thanks for the clarification.

Actually, if I had the money in my account when it was requested the first time, I would have sent KS the money.

I did not realize it was a scam until he sent the second request for money. And that request was so funky that it did not escape notice.

I mentioned to someone else and found out the same request went to dozens of people.

jide, I have nothing against Nigerians but it's sad that only a few bad seeds can destroy the reputation of an entire people. Every race seems to have their own stereotype based on only a few people like the stereotypes of: "Black people all speak ebonics, like watermelon, fried chicken and kool-aid, White people like cheese, are racist, or have eating disorders, Asians are all extremely smart, know kung fu, and are short, All Middle-Eastern people are terrorists and blow stuff up" then you go into the stereotypes in specifics with the "Russians all get drunk and beat people up, Chinese and Japanese people hate one another, Iranians and Iraqis all hate each other" and then comes your stereotype of "All Nigerians are scammers". I myself was born in Jamaica, and everyone knows what the stereotype for Jamaicans are....

Anyways Jide, the point is, what everyone said before me is right. Create your own good reputation and nothing can stop you from succeeding. Don't give up - Keep moving forward until you reach your goals and beyond...

Dude, it's not just one act. It's the pattern of behavior that has become nearly universal.

Still, you saw how Shiloh had developed a decent reputation here. Had he not pushed things the way he did, his country of origin would have remained irrelevant to most people. As someone pointed out to you in another thread, quit posting your dismay and just get on with creating your own reputation.

I once lost 12k in a Nigerien Western Union scam, and almost a whole load of product... How their check passed my bank I will never know, but the banker explained to me how that stuff works, and it would scare you to know how many people make a fulltime living at it. In some parts of some countries, scamming like this is a almost a legit "industry" with offices full of people doing it all day long.

I almost would advise any Nigerien IMr to try and find somewhere else to market from. Unfortunately the stigma has been proven "generally" true to the degree that legit guys will have alot of trouble convincing anyone.

Ps. Yes, I remember Shiloh... he was a little too nice I always thought.
