Instead of selling products, how can you sell traffic?

Thank you for reading this post.

Over the past year, I have built a brand new site, and have dominated the search engine rankings in a very competitive niche. According to SEMRush, my traffic is worth (if I were to buy the equivalent traffic via Adwords) about $15K - which is rising every month.

I'd either like to convert my ecommerce website into a lead generation site and sell the leads to my competitors OR sell the website to my competitors.

Anyone ever had any experience with this kind of gear shifting?

Thanks in advance!

Ever consider keeping the website and selling advertising space to your "competitors"?

If it's getting good traffic count and you can show that to your competitors then sell ad space to them for recurring income each month. This way you keep the asset and can grow it while you make money each month, as the traffic grows then increase your monthly charges for the ad space based on the increased traffic the ads see.

      Thanks for the reply.

I thought about that, but it's a direct competitor. It would be a little tacky from my point of view. (If the site were a blog - it would be doable, but it's pure ecommerce)

It would be like McDonalds putting posters up in their restaurants for Burger King . . .

Discontinuing the sales of products would certainly change the traffic patterns, perhaps effectively invalidating all the links labeled as pointing to a store site, the re-purposed site might have to get new traffic sources since the existing links might be short lived.

If you could quietly get the word out that the site may be up for sale, your competition may be more likely to be the ones who approach you?

Sorry...not sure how I but I totally missed the part about it being an ecommerce site.

In that case I think I would probably keep it and sell the leads. Personally I am kind of big on keeping sites that show promise and figuring out different ways to monetize them instead of selling them outright.
