Free ebook and kindle formatting guide
While this is a guide to Smashwords, a site much like the kindle publishing site, these guidelines are ideal for all kinds of ebook formatting. Once you get the .doc formatted according to these guidelines, it will properly format to your desired end result and actually look decent. Many kindle publishers use this guide as a template.
