Google ranking - not sure why no traffic?

Hi all,

This evening I checked my rank in Market Samurai for my long tail keyword niche that I am targeting which is a 4 word phrase with my domain perfectly matching. To my surprise I was showing up as ranking #8 for the long tail keyword in MS as well as google. (wikipedia is #1 - is it hard to beat wikipedia?!)

Despite this, my analytics account is not showing ANY traffic to my site (other than my own). The phrase generates 1.5 million searches/month globally and I would expect that I should be getting a few results being on the first page? I am a bit perplexed as to why I am not receiving any traffic while being on page #1 of google- thoughts?

Of note: the entire site is only a week old and was probably JUST crawled by google 2 days ago (Market Samurai says it crawled it 2 days ago). I have developed 7+ pages of really good content and have really focused on optimizing EVERY page for the targeted longtail keyword. This includes the photos, titles, tags, etc... I am continuing to build out the site on a daily basis, and hope to go even higher on page 1 and to start generating some traffic ASAP!

Below are the screenshots from MS showing where I am and the potential for monetization - currently I am listed as #8

1.5 million searches globally. Did you check the google inside to see if there are any searches for the past one year.

You might not be able to out-rank WikiPedia, but you do realize that anybody can edit any article on there, right?

LOL in case you still dont get what I'm saying... you can make WikiPedia work for you..

edit some of the articles that are ranking #1 when you search, and drop a link back to your site on them.

    I like to call it... Wiki-Traffic 9.0!

hahaha (completely joking about the name, i have no idea what i would call this method if i was seriously trying to brand it or something like that)

1.5 million searches is massive for a four word niche?

Have you tried looking at google webmasters tool for your site. It gives you its real ranking average as well as the number of impressions your site appeared on and the clicks.

If you are going to trust any analytics tool, this one might give you much better insight.

Think I answered my own question - it appears that the term was a "broad match term" and was not "phrase" or "exact" match....

In fact, the phrase and exact match searches are only 720 and 480 per month respectively. If I narrow down to the main keyword its 50k/month for an exact match and 1million for the phrase match.

Seems that I learn something new everyday! Looks like I have to go back to the drawing table and re-evaluate my site now LOL....

In any event, anyone know of any good tips and tricks for finding long-tail-keywords and micro-niches' to target? What guidelines do you follow when selecting a niche longtail keyword to target? Do you have minimum search volumes that target the exact match keyword or phrase?

Looking for some guidance I as I continue to develop and monetize some sites....

      Thanks!!!

You are right and I learned it that way too Always go with exact match and then have a look at the competition of that keyword in the serps. Have a look if it is a buyer keyword. If not than you have to decided if your work worth it or not. And from my experience the adwords tool is not that accurate. I have sites showing 2000 exact seraches for my main phrase and only getting 10 visitors a day and for others only showing 800 exacts a day but I get 30-40 visitors a day. It all comes down to good niche and keyword research if you want SEO traffic. And then you have to build links.

        Cheers

If Wikipedia is in the Google search for your keyword, even you are in #8 in ranking. My advice is find another keyword to optimized.

looks like you have a few "big sites" in the top 10, so like savvybizbuilder said, if 1 of them is Wikipedia, then they probably get like 99.9% of the search traffic and you have no chance
