Who has ditched their landline phone for an IP phone??

I am thinking about ditching my landline phone and buying a couple magicjack boxes or something similar. I have heard some good things about Magicjack but was wondering if anyone had any advice or experience with this.

I bought a Magicjack this week but have not had a chance you use it much. I like the idea of taking it with me when I travel.

We never hardly answer the home phone as we all have cell phones and I use skype alot for business anyway.

I can save a few bucks if I ditch the landline phone but still wonder what are the gottcha's??

Thanks,
Anthony.

I use voip for my business. It works fine. I would think about a paid service. You will get a lot more features from my research. If you look around there are options out there for under 10 a month that are very good. Downside is your internet goes down you don't have a phone, but then you aren't working either if that happens so not really a big deal. For emergency you have cell so that is not an issue. there is always Google voice too.

    It's GREAT.

Not only do you get super-cheap international rates...you can also do really fancy things with a "SIP"/DID. (Virtual phone number).

For example, you can be located in one country and tie numbers from another country to your SIP. You could be in Spain (like i am)...but have multiple numbers, eg. US phone number, German number etc..and whoever is calling you from their country will only pay LOCAL fees as if they would call their neighbor...even if you are international. So you can offer contact phone nrs. in the US or wherever you want, just as an example.

I dont use Magicjack, i have a VoIP capable router where i can plug in a "normal" phone...but the result would be the same. If you want you might want to check terrasip.com <-- thats where i usually buy numbers and they are quite cheap. So..you can order your virtual phone number there and it also includes very low international calling rates..which is about 1000000x cheaper than calling international from a landline.

I don't know how Magicjack works with other operating systems, but I had it on my old Windows XP, and it caused weird things to happen on my computer. I ditched it, but that was 2 or 3 years ago, before I got Win 7. Just a heads up, in case your computer starts acting up.

I've been with Vonage VOIP for a couple of months short of 5 years and I love them. Their service has been first rate and their price is out of this world compared with AT&T.

We are transplanted Brits living in the US, so our international calls are always numerous. Vonage calls to the UK are totally free of charge - you can't beat that. Plus, whenever we travel away from home (even internationally), Vonage have a service called Vonage Extensions which allow me to use my cell phone as an extension and call anywhere I would from from the main phone.

      They are brilliant!

Same here. I had an iMac, and it caused me a lot of freezes/crashes. In fact it was the only thing that gave me any problems. I believe all the hard crashes caused my motherboard to fry as well.

Right now I'm using a company called VoiPo. They are partially or wholly owned by Hostgator. I chose them over Ooma because I read Voipo's customer service and quality were excellent. Paid $180ish for the box and 2 years of service. No monthly fees. Quality so far goes from ok to very good (some numbers better than others) but much much better than MagicJack.

The most recent version of MagicJack, MagicJack Plus, doesn't even need to be plugged into a computer. It just plugs into your router as no computer is necessary. Something tells me that when it doesn't need to rely on a computer it's going to be more stable.

I never bought Majic Jack, just heard too many bad things about it last year. I remember Yahoo kept showing for the longest time that it was one of the 10 worst new products to hit the market for 2010, lol. Maybe it is better now but I have not had a landline for a couple of years now, never answered it when I did Between Skype and my cellphones, that is all I need.

Same as poster above I haven't used a landline in years 5 or more. I have magicjack, however, I haven't used it but maybe once or twice, it's great but I just havent needed it. I use cell phones and that's enough for me.

I have had magicjack for about a month now, and love it. I can't stand talking on a cell phone, and this completely solved that problem. Plus free NA calls, I love it.

The only thing I use my cell for now is txting.

I currently use Time Warners' VOIP w/UPS service and am happy with it. I have a land line only because I still have kids at home and have a monitored fire/smoke/CO alarm. When they leave the house we'll probably get rid of even that and just use our cell phones. I have a magic jack for my business but can't say I'm impressed with it. It seems fine for quick calls - but I have conference calls that can last an hour and the magic jack always drops the calls within 15 mins - so I don't use it for conference calls any more.

I have both MagicJack and Google Voice, and there is no comparison between the two. MajicJack is completely unstable, and cuts in and out. Whereas Google Voice is flawless.

Also, if you have a smart phone, you can download an application called "iCall" which allows you to make WiFi calls with your own mobile phone and phone number, but not use your minutes.

For the record, I have been landline free since April of 2010.

  • Tried Vonage but the quality was poor and the billing was thoroughly mucked-up.

I'm not sure I'd take that plunge given the reliability of my connection!

How strange, I've never had a problem with them in nearly five years...

BTW I read an article not long ago predicting that by 2015 all phone companies, even the giants, will be VOIP.

Landlines are always going to be more reliable... IP phones are more cost effective but dependant on the net connection!

I use Ooma and love it. I got the hub on Amazon, 149.00 I think, so I dont pay any monthly or yearly fees. The Telo comes w/ a 10/month fee.

Costs more to get started but cheaper in the long run.

Butt since you use Skype, get a skype phone and plug it into your wall phonejack and all your house phones will work. You need to unplug the line in the outside box though.
