Is this spamming?

Mass submission of a single e-mail is spamming. Google knows that, we all know.

What about mass social bookmarking and mass article submission or syndication? Do not these also exhibit the same trick?

These two practices seem very prevalent now a days in order to gain mass publicity and one may expect Goole's new forthcoming algo frwoning upon them, too...!:confused:

  • All you have mention are spamming. Spamming doesn't only covers the mass distribution of E-mails. It also includes mass bookmarking and article submission. Even using different mini sites in mass posting like blogger, weebly, wordpress etc. to build backlinks are considered spamming.
  • Not if they all signed up to receive the email it isn't. Spamming is sending unsolicited emails. This is very different.

    That's not really spamming either. Gaming the search engines perhaps.

    By your definition anything appears to be spamming.

    Right, I'm bored, this is going to turn into a "what is spamming" debate which has no doubt been discussed to death here and I have better things to do than debate it's definition.

    To the OP though, one of my lists has many thousands on it, they all signed up, I sent them all an email today. According to you and Google, that's spamming. However, no one on my list calls it spamming and no one complained.
  • You might want to consider the difference between fly posting and junk mail. They are both illegal offline - but quite different things. Same here.

    • Fly posting is illegal but junk mail is the derogatory term many people use for Direct Mail. Direct Mail, as far as I am aware is legal and it is a very effective marketing method when the right audience is targeted.

    Because quite often they are "mass submitted" it's also very easy for it to be "real"...

    Links can very easily go viral on the bookmarking sites and Google knows this... I'm sure they also know how we try to 'game' them...

    It's all a game when Google is involved and there is so much "fog" when it comes to determining what they want or think... So folks believe Google tells us one thing to keep us from realizing the truth (and keep us from exploiting it)...

    Okay - with that out of the way - I love social bookmarking and find it very helpful for both traffic and backlinks and it's one of my main strategies when ranking sites...

  • Mass emailing a single email is not necessarily spam...

    We marketers have built lists of 1,000's of peoples emails.

    When we send out an email broadcast to our entire list data bases via our autoresponder to our lists, it is NOT spamming.

      Spamming as a term is used in many different ways, but this is the essence of the real "spamming".
