INTERNET MARKETING

Hi there,
Don't you love it when you come across a free program you didn't know existed! I came across one today that most people probably use or know about, but thought I'd share with those of you who don't! By the way I have no interest in promoting this in any way, just a genuine share. For those that don't know of it, its called dropbox. It's like an online backup centre but you can drop large files in a sharebox which is public by invite, kind of like mailing files of any size, and best of all its free up to 2gb. Google it and see what you think! Or is there anyone using it already? If so, any good?

Yes it's good for working 'in the cloud'. So you can be anywhere in the world with your iPad or notebook, and as long as you have a wireless internet connection, you can edit your documents, save them, and they will immediately get synced up to the same document on your desktop.

Yes, DropBox is very useful. I can drop a file in the box on my pc and it almost instantly shows up in the box on my droid and vice versa.

  +1 for Dropbox. Shared folders are lovely when you work with VA's. You get a nice little popup notice on you screen everytime they "drop" new files in or delete something.

You can also try box.net. The reason I like box.net is if you sign up specifically thru your mobile phone, they will give you 50GB for a free account.

Dropbox is a much better alternative to GoogleDocs. I had our entire team switch over to dropbox for filesharing about 6 months ago. Very easy to use and very convenient.

  Dropbox can also be used when you've got a customer with problems accessing your downloads. You can provide that customer with a temporary link right to the product if necessary.

I really like Droptext, which is a text editor for the iPad that works directly with files in a Dropbox account.

I just discovered drop box this week after my hard drive died on me!
I signed up for a free account and have been backing my important stuff up online.
Great site very easy and fast and best of all free 2gb!

It seems like a very cool deal, but from a marketer's perspective how many of these free users need to upgrade to the higher packages to make this profitable for them? A cloud hosting costs perhaps $100/mo with 1TB of storage on the cloud so that means that they would need to convert 10 people to the 50GB plan to break even that's 10 at 50GB which = 500GB so another 500GB for the free users = 250 free users. That means they would need to convert 1 in 25 to paid plan to break even (this is assuming they can get cloud hosting that cheap) That seems like pretty high conversions to me, just to break even... unless they have unheard of cheap cloud hosting...

dropbox is a great tool, and I think online storage or working on the cloud is in its infancy and will get to be huge. It's great for sharing files and as a backup for the important ones.

  Dropbox is a useful tool to all, it serves your needs, but not all your needs. Zukmo is one other cloud service I came across and was amused to see tons of additional features with better security. I would suggest Zukmo to all those who are looking for bundled features.

Dropbox rules for filesharing/collaboration with employees, VAs etc but just a note of caution about using it for backups. Files you delete (including accidentally!) are only kept for a month, so if you don't realise you lost a file for a whole month (quite possible if you run a bunch of different projects) you could be in trouble.

About the model, I doubt they are paying $100/mo/Tb, they probably have their own server farms (I stand corrected on that, they use Amazon's cloud storage, but I am sure they are getting a bulk price ). On the other hand, they may be storing more than 2GB per user since they keep a multiple version history of all your files, though no doubt they use compression. I guess they must be in the black at the end of it, though with the current shortage/high prices of hard disk drives, who knows...
