First site: selling our own product

by francisgane 7 replies
Hi all,

I've been reading up on this informative forum and am about to test my knowledge by trying out a site.

My father has a book he wrote a while back that is now out of print. He has been given the copyright back and we now want to sell the book as an ebook via a small site.

The book is an academic one and is an introduction to a famous academic.

Any advice on getting on page one of google? Long tail keyword research and then use this to buy an exact match domain?

Was thinking of setting up an opt-in email form on the site to collect interested peoples emails (using a discount on the ebook when it is released as a reason to do so).

Let us know what you think of this strategy.

All advice is greatly appreciated and needed for a newbie like myself!

Thanks in advance!

    Hi,

What kind of demand is there for this book? Initial research should discover the demand for exact keywords (people looking for this book) and then expand to research the niche and related keywords. Get on niche related blogs and forums to network with others.

As far as collecting email addresses, a discount is good, you could also consider offering a free chapter and/or a collection of excerpts like "10 most important things from xyz book...".

Most importantly, you know what you need to do, so do it!

I would look into selling this on Amazon. You get a lot of natural traffic there. You get to take advantage of the fact that a lot of folks think of Amazon when they buy books online. Once you do that, you'll know more about how to market the book off of Amazon. There are a number of good WSO's on this forum about how to sell on Amazon. I would look at those.

the book is currently for sale on amazon through the original publisher but when stocks of it are gone they won't be replenished. was thinking of offering the ebook at a lower price than the paperback version still available in some places.

The beauty of KDP -- https://kdp.amazon.com/self-publishing/signin -- is that you don't need a website or anything else to get the book selling.

Just sign up, and post the book on the Kindle store.

Pay attention to the description and the tags, because that's how the book will get found.

Re "Any advice on getting on page one of google? Long tail keyword research and then use this to buy an exact match domain?"

You'll need to decide whether or not this will be worthwhile, Francis.

How many sales did the print edition have? Is there a demand? How much money are you likely to make from your digital edition? (You can of course use CreateSpace to develop a new print edition.)

Academics publish in order to publish, and for reputation, not purely to make sales.

So, ask your father whether he's got a mass audience book in him. That might make more money than the academic book. :-)

      Good luck with it.

You should offer a Kindle version. It's pretty easy to take it from ebook format to Kindle and sell it on Amazon. Not sure if you publisher still holds rights. Something to check out.

It has sold in many countries and has been translated into quite a few languages. The publishers still hold rights but want to buy the rights from my father which makes us think the title still has potential to continue selling if they want to keep it for themselves. We're waiting for my father to be officially handed back full rights so we can begin the site etc.
Kindle sounds like an interesting route. Will look into it...
