Im new to this. Bought a sitepoint website a few months back. It basically sells a niche ebook.
Subsequently found this forum and started learning about REAL internet marketing.

I posted an article last week on ezine. Used 3 words in my keyword phrase. When i did google search today my ezine article is on page 1.(there were 759,000 results for that phrase)
When i do google search with the same keywords, except in quotation marks i get page 1 for my article ( only 790 results)
My ezine article only has had 50 views.

Am i in too small a niche?

I dont understand how so few views of the article gives me page 1 on google.

Most people don't search in " " your #1 listing in quotes is due to the power of ezine articles site, if you where to post it in you own site it would not rank that high.

With 759,000 results this is probably not too small of a niche, more importantly, find out if it is a profitable niche.

A quick way to do this is to search your phase again and see how many adwords (sponsored) ads are displaying, if there are many, you probably have at least a somewhat profitable keyword especially if you sell what the sponsored ads are selling.

I did and there are 4-5 showing on the first 4 pages of results. Too few?

Actually, I am making a small fortune selling an e-book in a niche that has NO SPONSORED ADS at all... I guess I am the only person in that niche, so I'd say that the number of Adwords advertisers is not really relevant...

    Nice, Welcome

Yes, the " " shows you how many competing websites have that exact phrase within the content of their web page. This is a much better measure of competition than the generic results.

My ezine article only has had 50 views.
Some articles stick, some don't. Keyword research tools can be waaay off with their estimates on traffic. You also have to consider that a large percentage of people searching for that phrase will click on ads AND the title of your article very important on whether or not people will click on it to read.

Am i in too small a niche?
Wish I could help you out, but there's not enough information here to answer this. One article on one keyword is not enough to determine if a niche is worth pursuing (unless you get a LOT of article views.)

I dont understand how so few views of the article gives me page 1 on google.
Your rankings in SERPs are not related to your article views; however, you'll certainly have more article views if you are ranked highly for a keyword phrase that has a lot of searches.

Searching without quotes is how most people use google. This will show you the results that an average surfer will see. Searching using quotes will help you see your competition better, but that's still too general for strategizing. Without quotes would be like searching your country, with quotes would be like searching your state. You need to search your city or even better, your neighborhood. Most people struggle getting traffic because they chose the wrong keyword to optimize for. There are better ways to strategize coming. Be patient until February...

Your ranking in google isn't affected by the number of views of your page or article. It is rather affected by many things, especially relevant incoming links with pagerank that has correct anchor text. This is an off-page factor. On-page factors would be the keyword in the title, h1, description, url, domain name, etc

I hope this helps. You did great by posting an article by the way!

Even though searching without quotes is the way most people do it that has very little to do with the competition. Whenever you want to get an idea of the competition always use quotes for your terms. I will give you an example:

search for "clear blue widgets" on Google without quotes...

You should get somewhere in the 309,000 range. If you look at the bolded words in the site's descriptions you will notice it is pulling rankings for clear blue and blue widgets mostly. Now, do a search with quotes. You should only get 1, maybe 2 results. This is because you are searching for the whole string together as one keyword and not variations of it.

So, when you want to get a clear idea of the competition you need to use the quotes to see who is going for that exact term.
