Newbie Keyword selection

Hey guys- I want to take a sec and introduce myself. I'm pretty new and learning a ton from this forum. Its addicting to me. I am just starting out in the making money niche (I know) I am also building a couple of e commerce niche sites and have dabbled with PPC, but I want to concentrate on my first project. My question is in regards to target keywords to use for article marketing, video marketing, blogs etc. I have been told to target a keyword with a monthly search of around 50,000 to 150,000. This makes sense. I have a couple of keyword tools and I am familiar with the google tool. However I get hung up when I plug a potential keyword into google search and see millions, sometimes hundreds of millions of results pages. These would represent my competition right? so, what is the best ratio of search average to results I should target? I could choose a keyword with lower search results but of course the search average is lower too. I appreciate any advice! Thanks. Please don't point me toward any more "programs" I have purchased a bunch and am also suffering from information overload. Just looking for some good old fashioned advice from successful people that were once in my shoes.

I'll tell you what I do for Article Marketing. I target "long tail keywords" with 10-50 searches per day and less than 10,000 search results in google. This gives me enough searches to get some decent traffic but also eliminates a lot of competition. I know some will disagree with these #'s but it works for me and it's a good range to start in.

    Good Luck,

Totally agree with Capone. Long Tail keywords are the way to go as they are extremely specific and you eliminate a lot of unwanted traffic and unwanted clicks - thus saving you money in the keyword longrun. Keywords with lower searches per day and less search results in google make great targeted traffic getting rid of a lot of competition. Also if your on a low budget, its extremely cost effective. Hope this helps!

Is there a longtail keyword suggestion tool that also show number of searches per day AND SE results?

Google Adwords Keyword Tool shows you Average Monthly and just divide by 30 = daily searches. eg 3000 monthly = 100 daily

Also shows you the Average Competition.

Great answers here. You want to target long tail keywords. I also want to add that if you are going to be doing PPC you want to look a the amount that advertisers are paying. It won't make sense to spend all your time targeting some long tail keywords that only get 5 cents a click.

Thanks everyone! This is the exact advice I was looking for! Keep it coming. My strategy is this: I have 2 offers, essentially the same one but with two different price points. I want to pick the keyword, design a landing page wrapped around that keyword then have the page direct people to either site. I want to go organic at first and eventually add PPC. Does this make sense? I think its better to optimize the landing page because I can do it over and over targeting these different keywords. The site itself is a turnkey and really only optimized for the very competitive keywords in the niche. I would also like to start building an email list. I have 22 already from my site. Gotta start somewhere! I have an autoresponder too. Should I put a sign up on the landing page as well as the one already on the site? From what I read I should offer something for free in exchange for their email. And what about automating digital delivery? Lots of questions, I know, but I truly appreciate all the responses and advice.

          thanks again!

    Hi Brian,
Doing google adwords for anything thats getting a couple thousand searches per month is worth aiming for. I think aiming for keywords of 50,000 to 150,000 is not necessarily the right track as there will be a massive amount of people competing on them.

Realistically people are searching in search engines to find answers to their problems. If you focus your keyword research on looking for problem statements in a particular niche and then build an adwords campaign that focuses on that or on long tail keywords (meaning 2 or more keywords in a phrase) then you will do better. If you use words like ''how'' and then your keyword you will generally find what the problem statements are. eg. in the google keyword tool type how trade and it will give you problem statement keyword phrases like how do i trade stocks, how do i trade futures etc?

when you setup your adwords make sure you do one adgroup per keyword. I learnt this from Perry Marshals product initially.

the next step really is to make sure you are sending them to a page that matches up with the keyword that they searched for and that the ad is relevant to that keyword. i hope this helps
