Hosting Account Suspended Without Prior Notice

One of my hosting accounts got suspended without prior notice, thus resulting to loss of hundreds of dollars. The support told me that my account was compromised. I have dozens of websites hosted on that server and th support told me to fix the error, while they can't specify what error should I fix.

If you are in my situation, what will you do? I transferred only 2 of the most important sites and plan to drop their service. I am truly disappointed on how they handle my account. The thing that I didn't like was that they did not send prior notice.

What a question... should I say yes, or no?

I don't trust anymore, especially with bigger websites..

Last month, all of my wordpress sites in this host got hacked. I deleted all websites and then reinstalled one by one. It's running good for several months until they suspended without prior notice. I never experience the same thing with my other hosts for several years now..

I'm sorry, on thinking through I realize this is not a good time for jokes or sarcastic remarks. I apologize. Sometimes Im a douche.

But then, people do DO shady things. So I just asked.

P.S. Switch to HostGator. Never had a problem.

It's okay. Yes, some of my websites have been with hostgator for several years now and I never had a problem.

its up to a customer to get a script installed, working properly, maintain it, and make sure it has sufficient security features.

individual script security of everyones web sites is not the job of a web host. its the job of the customer who decided to give use a particular script.

sever level security and site/script level security are 2 different issues completely.

as for how they handled it, do you really even know how much trouble the error was or was not causing. are you on a shared server or even a vps...i am not even thinking x10 offers dedicated servers? if so, would it be fair to the others people on the server to suffer while they give you time to fix your problem. what if my site was also on your server and your problems were taking money out of my pocket through no fault of my own?

i totally understand why you are upset, it seems you might want to step back and look at the big picture of why they did what they did... it surely was not to piss you off.
I was not saying they should fix the problem. My point is, I will fix the problem. But how could I fix it if I don't know because they won't tell me the particulars. All of the sites hosted within are wordpress blogs and I never had any special script or something. If they found security holes, why just didn't tell me which of these websites have a problem and I will fix it right away... Anyway, I understand your point.

For the account that got suspended--were you using Hostgator, or?. I'd also recommend you use Bluehost as well (they're the same company under different names IIRC being told by someone).

Hmm. In all honesty, maybe this is a sign that you need to change hosts. I hate to be all conspiracy theory but they may try to convince you to upgrade or something to "escape" the problems. I don't know. There are too many other great hosts out there to be dealing with these sort of problems. Hostgator is okay. I'm currently with Wirenine and I've never had a problem.

DON'T rely on shared hosters and cheap hosters if your business depends on it!

Shared hosters can always suspend your account without prior notice - in the past this happened to me quite a few times.

Get REAL hosting like a VPS, schedule daily or at least weekly backups.

Also..on shared...if an account is compromised...or let's say that an account would would use a lot of CPU resources...of course they will shut you down since this would affect any other user on that same host. What should they do? Leave your sites running while they are sending out viruses? You see what i mean. Shared is bad.

even a vps is really just a glorified shared hosting account with some extra software installed to make it work more like a dedicated server. You are still sharing a single cpu.

on a vps you and your neighbors still have a an affect on each other, which is why hosting companies will still respond very proactively against issue like this even if you are on a vps.

its unlikely THEY found the security holes. its much more likely an unscrupulous person found the holes and began to exploit them. that activity alerted the hosting company that something was up and since it is not in fact their problem, they suspended the account.

had they given you the time to work on things, other customers on that same server would have been suffering financial loss because of a problem on your sites. that is certainly not even remotely fair, and if the shoe was on the other foot, you would be screaming about that.

as for wordpress. wordpress itself is one of the most widely used scripts on the internet. as such, its also one of the most attacked because if you figure out how to do it, you have millions of targets.

Read the thread, rather than post on the fly.

The web host is clearly named in a post above and it's not HostGator.

BlueHost and HostGator are not the same!

As to recommending BlueHost - I have used them and can't recommend them. Unless of course you want to suffer the same problems as befell the OP.

      Just my thoughts,
      Jeff.

This means they don't know, and they shut down the entire server and cleaned it to make sure it wouldn't happen again

Yes, just get hostgator and move on.

I had "The best host in the world" as far a I was concerned. Their Customer service was perfect in all respects. One day my sites were all down and their site was gone. A couple of weeks later they were back and when I contacted them I got no response. They were just back in business and selling new accounts all over again.

Best to just move on. And a lesson for all here including me, backup, backup, backup.

I have hostgator and lovinghosting without any problem for years now.... I just tried this xhosting for a year now and although their server is faster than hostgator (at least on my machine), this experience tell me to stop using them...

I had all my websites hacked with them.... My programmer told me not to use the same admin username in all of my wordpress sites and I did delted everything and changed the admin username.

I am doing the same with other hsosts and never got a single site hacked.... So I can't blame my script s or whatever.... it's the host with poor security...

Theres one element overlooked here. Wordpress. A insecure Wordpress install is like having your front door open in the ghetto with a bunch of new tv and stereo boxes on the front lawn and a bright pink sign saying on vacation until next week tacked to a stick in your front lawn. If it happened as you say first once then a second time then it will happen again and again until you learn how to secure your install.

Exactly, and any other scripts running on your hosting account, whether they're Javascript, PHP, Perl, or anything that has a potential security hole. My hosting service fortunately sends me security alerts if anything (well a lot) is a possible security problem which often means it's really new or it's out of date. It's always an old backup or something, or a site I threw into a folder, so it makes it easy to clean house! But any script sitting on your host can be a point of compromise and many hosting services hold you responsible for that. I would read their Terms of Service to be sure.

I am so confused about why so many people talk about hostgator at WF? Outside of WF hostgator is not considered a very good host... how does it even compare to a host like icdsoft or inmotionhosting ???

Most of us hemorrhage copious amounts of money for nickle and dime stuff, advertising, ect.
and hostgator is cheap, cheap, cheap, and fairly reliable.

its just as important to save as much money as possible, as it is to make it.

any way that why i use them ...
