In these circumstances, would you make a product?

After looking at a competitors product, i'm in two minds whether I should make my own product or sell theirs.

To begin with, it's not very expensive and I get 75% commission. If I wanted to undercut them, it would be very cheap and most affiliates wouldn't want to sell it for less than 100% anyway.

Plus, TBH, It's very good and I can't compete with their writing style. In the interest of giving the best to my list, they would have more benefit with the other product.

So,

I was thinking about tackling by creating a smaller product (ie. a freebie) in order to get their email.

I'd then offer the competitors product, them make my own upsells and downsells for my backend.

Plus have a much better site/blog, so they all come back again and again.

Does that sound OK? At least till I can afford to have a great product made.

    Hey Fin,

What you could do is offer a free report on the topic and start building a list in the niche.

Provide the list with good quality information.

Then ask them what they want....

I am certain that the two products have their strengths and weaknesses....if you can improve on their weaknesses then you already have a better product.

Also consider using a different angle or hook....

For example the my be targeting a particular sector of the niche or a general sector.....

So you target another sector or a more specific sector....

For example your competitor may be doing the following:

    "blue widgets for everybody"

    Whilst you could target

    "blue widgets for men"

This would also allow you to charge more for it due to the perceived value in the specificity...

    Hope this helps

    Chris

Don't underestimate your own abilities. I know that you said that your competitors Had a better writing style and even a better product. But given enough time don't you think you could Produce something that is both worthwhile and of great value? I think it is important that you see yourself as being able to reach this goal in the future even if you cannot achieve this today. and as you communicate with your list you can cell people on what the future will bring from you.

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

Yeah, I think I'll get much better as time goes on. I just want to get this show on the road. Luckily, I could start building traffic after about 20 articles + the free report.

If I go down the "create product" route just now, I've no doubt the money will take longer to come in.

I'm not scared of this competitor taking my traffic. My blog will be great + they look like they are happy to just sit where they are.

My extra products will ge a hit with a big list. Going down the affiliate road in the beginning means I can build a list and start making money.

Just say their product is about "how to lose weight." Pretty simple and they're happy with that.

My extra products will break down the niche, which they have no interest doing.

Once I've got money coming in, I'll write then have edited a great book to swap over in my auto-reponds.
