Creating an Information Product?

I'm thinking about creating some informational products and I'm wondering, what is the best software to use to create a PDF version?

It should be easy to use, but not basic though, I need my PDF to look attractive.

The new MS Word can create PDF documents. They also have templates to make your pdf book look nicer

I agree, use Word and include the formatting you would usually use to make it look nice. Then just use the "Save As" menu and select PDF when you're done.

I use the new Open Office, which is now called Libre. Both are still free.

With both versions, you can create a text document, then Export to PDF.

I would encourage you to get Libre at Home » LibreOffice, because they have stopped supporting Open Office.

I have Adobe Acrobat for that purpose but in general MS Word will do the job... also there are many other software solution for creating PDFs that you can find online, but I would say there is no need if you are using MS Word that supports PDF creation...

If you don't have Word, you can use Open Office. That's what I use. It's free.

With all due respect, MS Word is not publishing software, Period. OpenOffice writer sometimes handles lay-outing better (esp. when images are involved), but it is not publishing software either. You may want to go with Adobe Indesign or Coral for the "best". IF you are looking for an intermediate solution, and have access to a MAC, pages is awesome. Alternatively, you may use TeX/LaTeX based word processors (they are super awesome). If you want to use any other software which is good for lay-outing but doesn't create PDF, you may install stand-alone pdf or ps print drivers.

That does not depend on the pdf creator for most part. It depends on how you lay-out the things.

Someone told me you can use Google Docs to convert text documents to PDFs too. Worth a try if you don't want to download 'more' software onto your computer.

The quickest and easiest way is just to type it up in word and save it as PDF.

There are any number of tools to do this and you can find them by searching for PDF converters. Since you are creating your initial products, my guess is you don't want to drop a ton of money to create PDFs. So the suggestion to use Open Office is a good one. Although there are other free solutions, Open Office provides an integrated solution where you create the products and convert them into PDF within the same software. Personally I like to keep things simple. So Open Office works for me.

Note: Not all PDF converters will convert embedded hyperlinks. So if you are including hyperlinks within your files, be sure they convert properly or you can lose some of the effectiveness of your product.

    Write in MS Word.

Then go to fiverr.com and get a cover image done for you for $5.

Put the image on your cover page, then save as PDF. Done!

    I use CutePDF.

    Just download and install.

Then you can create your document in Microsoft Word and click PRINT. - Instead of selecting your physical printer you can select "CutePDF" and it will turn into a PDF doco

    Simple

You can then search Google for free 3d ebook cover creators. - Plenty to use online

I use Word to create all of my eBooks and then jazz them up a little bit with Photoshop by making images, headers and backgrounds.

Very easy and they come out very nicely

Here are some instructions that I wrote a little while back, hope it helps:

Instructions for creating a PDF from a Word document:

If you have Word 2007, then click on "Add-Ins" in the top toolbar and then click "Create PDF".

    -------------------------------------

If you have an earlier version of "Word" that does not have this feature:

Go to CutePDF - The free PDF Converter, Convert to PDF for free, Free PDF Utilities. and download the free software on the left side of the screen.

After you install the software, open up your document, then go to file print and then select "Cute PDF" as your printer.

Continue on like you would regularly print a document but it will save a pdf of the file on your desktop (or anyplace you choose to save it).

This software leaves no watermark on your pdf so it looks very professional.

    --------------------------------------

Or you can go to OpenOffice.org and download the free software (which is free software similar to Microsoft Office)

In the word processor called "Writer" that comes with this free software, you can creat PDF's of your documents.

Open "Writer" in Open Office after you have downloaded the software. Go to File -> Open -> Open the free report Word Document off of your computer.

When you are finished editing the document, just click the "PDF" icon in the top toolbar and it select what you want to name it and where you want to save the file and click OK.

You can now close the Word Document without saving it and go and find the new PDF file on your computer.

    --------------------------------------

If you don't have a PDF reader, just go to Adobe.com -> Downloads -> Adobe Reader, and download the reader. This will let you view PDF files.

    --------------------------------------
    ** Tip **

If you want to make clickable links in your PDF it depends on what PDF creator software you are using. My version of Word does not let me do this, so I have to create my PDF's using Writer in Open Office. This enables me to have clickable links in my PDF's.
