Question about monetizing my dot edu

I am not much of an IMer, but I am an educator who ended up with a real, grandfathered, dot edu that is a generic name. I have been looking for a way to monetize it and I think I have an idea.

What if I made a Wordpress Multisite similar to Edublogs and charged a monthly fee with upgrades?

I found this forum by following a link to ".edu backlinks" and there is even an ad for them at the top of this page.

Would people pay for a wordpress blog site on a dot edu domain?

One could make their own back links and trade them out for reciprocal links - similar to the idea at Rentanedu.com.

My thought was that I could charge $47/month and limit it to 20-30 users.

I was going to post the idea in the JV forum, but I don't think I am eligible to post there yet. I don't have much IM experience to offer, but I know WPMU, etc.

I feel I am wasting the value of a dot edu domain and I need to find a way to make money with it.

I would appreciate your advice and input.

Is the idea to give people their own wordpress install as a subdomain on your .edu?

If so $47/month is a LOT of money. Not to mention, once one subdomain gets filled up with spam and google recognizes it, it will make any links from your entire domain useless for SEO purposes.

In my own Wordpress install I use the plugin "Spam Free Wordpress" and I make all links nofollow by default. I assume I would do the same for the .edu site. Do you think these measures would be sufficient to prevent content spam?

The cost of $47 was arbitrary, just thinking about making $1000/month with 20 users. I am not sure what would be a good price. Any thoughts on how much would be reasonable?

      Thank you for your input!
