Edit Spam Comments to get Back Links?

I have always thought comment spam was something to avoid and delete.

However, someone told me that he has been using them to help him for years.

He edits the comments, changes the email, and changes the link to one of his articles.

What do people think of this practice?

It could convert Spam to something good. Or is it underhanded.....

It is a bad idea if you're hosting all of your blogs on the same IP (IE. shared hosting from the same provider). If you create a network of sites that all connect to each other utilizing the same IP that is a big red flag to Google and other search engines.

It could work if you are hosting all of your sites off of different IPs, but that might become cost prohibitive.

      Thanks for that clarification.

Would that still apply if you had a reseller account with say, Hostgator? I believe that gives you different IP addresses for each of your sites.

It seems that it is best to keep to the common sense notion that Spam is bad - and to delete it.
