Made First Clickbank Sale!

I was never much into clickbank. I've been earning a fair amount of money through Adsense and was pretty satisfied. But, about 2 weeks ago, I decided to make a change.

I have a site in the fitness niche. It is averaging over 500 targeted visitors per day but the problem is, according to a survey I put up, my visitors are mainly consist of teenagers that are trying to get a six pack. They also mentioned they have no interest in buying products...Which kinda broke my heart.

On November 11, I thought "Whatever... I am going to promote a Clickbank product anyway and see how it goes. It can't hurt."

So, yea, I put a link on my site's sidebar and it's been doing poorly. Very poorly. This morning (12 days after I put the link up), I have receives over 930 hops and zero sale. I told myself if I don't make a sale after 1000 hops, I will put Clickbank behind me.

Tonight, as I was going to bed, I decided to check if I have reached 1000 hops yet. And lo and behold...

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Yup... After 987 hops (in 12 days), the site has made a sale.

I know the conversion rate makes it look discouraging. But, keep in mind all I did was putting an affiliate link in my sidebar. I am sure it will get better if I hire a copywriter to do some pre-sell and such.

Congrats! Am I ever so jealous, but I'll be in your shoes very soon! Also what did you mean by "I am sure it will get better if I hire a copywriter to do some pre-sell and such"? what do you mean by pre-sell? and why a copywriter? Sorry for newbie question.

So you can definitely have a clickbank ad taking one of your ad spots and then one adsense ad somewhere else on your page and you'll still make the "guaranteed" money that you get from views.
Trust me, my layout would look bad if I added in banners any other places. I like m site to look attractive to the eyes. It provides better user experience and make me look more professional.

Pre-selling is basically an article that help convince the visitors to buy the products before they click on the affiliate link to see the sales page. It helps increase conversion rate (number of sales per click).

A copywriter is a professional (the good ones, anyaway) who specialize in writing such articles.

    Dash,

    Congratulations on the sale! ...But..

Jeff Walker would call what you're doing "hope marketing". You put your banner on the sidebar and hope that you make a sale. And you did, which is awesome but a 1/1000 conversion rate stinks, teenagers or no teenagers.

You must must must build a list. Now. Yesterday!

Offer an enticing opt-in incentive, write a great value-filled autoresponder sequence and promote truth about abs or whatever the product after several trust building emails. Don't be surprised if you convert more in the 5% range this way. Which, with 1000 people on your list is almost $1200.

Of course they'll say they don't want to buy anything in a survey. Who's going to say, "yes! I wanna spend money on XY and Z...now"

You'll be amazed at how these gangly adolescents all of a sudden have credit cards and do want to buy because you've done your job convincing them that their lives will be better when they have better bodies, and they will be (and they, in turn, convince their beleaguered folks to shell out the dough).

    Good luck!

Oh, and did I mention build a list? :p

Agree! Build a list. Get yourself popup domination or something similar and start building your list. I recommend you buy a PLR fitness eBook and use it to get opt-ins. Hey, if it sounds good teenagers will get their parents to buy them stuff.

When my son was an early teenager, he'd study the WWE wrestling websites & merchandise and makes lists of things he wanted to buy. That would go on for months, then finally he made a small 10 buck purchase.

He'd get mail order catalogs like "Things You Never Knew Existed" and bookmark the pages with stuff he wanted. He was always catalog shopping, but only made an actual purchase one time ever. And that involved a very unstreamlined and inconvenient method of him giving me cash and asking me to place the order for him with my Visa. I've spoke with other parents and its the same sort of thing with their kids. Teens buying stuff is far and few between.

As stated in this thread, Teenagers is a HUGE market of non-buyers.

Apple was one of the few companies able to crack the nut,
        with their iTunes music sales.

Nowadays, other than selling iPhone/smartphone apps,
it's still kinda a lost cause marketing to teenagers.

So the takeaway for the OP here is that if your
heart is set on marketing to teens, consider converting
your product to an iPhone app.

ONCE UPON A TIME there was a Warrior named Bob. He was sad. And frustrated. You see, Warrior Bob spent every last nickel on Internet Marketing e-books. But nothing panned out. No traffic. No sales. He was one sad Bob. Then one day Bob found a bottle. He rubbed it and out came a Genie who granted him 3 wishes. For Wish #1 Bob asked for a pet Dragon. Wish Granted. For Wish #2, Bob wanted Warriors' websites seen by 53 million TV viewers, for under $5 per broadcast. The Genie said... (click here)

    Hi David,

congratulations on your first sale with clickbank.

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, as I mentioned above, the conversion rate sucks. But, I didn't put much effort into it. I just throw my affiliate link in there to have some proof that my visitors are interested in buying before I decide whether or not I should spend money and time on a marketing strategy... Yes, I do plan on building a list.

Correction: My name is Dash... Not David

I am no Adsense expert. Sorry. All I did was placing the ads in positions that will catch my visitors' eye. It makes to sense to hide your ad block if you want people to click on them.

Whoopee! Thank you Dash Evra! You just made me go look at my Clickbank account, which I had not checked for a while, since I got tired of seeing all those zeros!

And, amazingly, I also made my first sale! (a bit over $20.00) It was from a product in the piano/music lesson niche, that I was promoting on a website that is 7 months old, and is getting over 3,000 visitors a month now, and just got promoted to a PR2 in the last Google Pagerank update.

It is the best site of all my sites so far, I have been doing IM for almost a year now, and this is my first real sale on any of my sites. I have also just recently starting making consistent money from Google Adsense, so I am excited that my efforts are starting to pay off!

Thanks again to the OP for getting me excited enough to check my own Clickbank account

I am not using any of the traditional method like article marketing, SEO etc... The fitness niche is way too competitive for that. The best advice I can give you (without giving away exactly what I am doing) is to think outside the box. Rather that competing against other sites, try to work with them instead. Ask to do guest blogging for many different sites in your niche. Much easier to get free traffic that way IMO for competitive niches
