Why Do People Lie? And Why Do Other People Believe Them?

I was just reading a thread advertising a content writing service. As so many services claim, all the writers were professionals from the US. The reviews were very favorable raving about how great the articles were.

A sample was included on the site. I just read it. I clearly read something different than the owner of the service or the recent purchasers. I didn't even have to look beyond the title to know something wasn't quite right.

I tried to read the thing but honestly I could only get about half way through. Within individual sentences, tense and pronouns changed. Now admittedly, I do this all the time when chatting or posting. But this was not chatting and posting. This was an article for sale. The errors should have been caught in editting.

There were so many of these kinds of errors that the writer could not have even been aware of them. Even an average writer would not make this many errors.

One of the reasons I couldn't read the whole article was because it was ridiculous. If you are a parent and you have ever had your kid come home from school and school you on the nature of the world, you would immediately see the pompousness of the article. I can only assume they were going for an authority article. Shoot and miss.

And articles are supposed to be broken up into bites, not walls of text. Attempts to break up the text with subtitles was less effective because one time everything was capitalized and the next only a few words were capitalized.

As for flow, imagine everything you know on a particular topic. Now mash that all onto paper with no regard for logical sequence and you will have this article. If the sentences were individually written better, I would swear they were lifted and pasted together.

Finally, there were just enough awkward uses of common phrases to know without a doubt this writer's first language was not English. If being a professional writer is defined by being paid well I guess I can't argue with that claim. This kind of writing, however, is worthless at any price.

What are people thinking? Why would they rave about this? I'd like to think they were shills but I don't think they were. Will the internet ever be worth reading or is it destined to become a bunch of gobbledigook?

Why Do People Lie? And Why Do Other People Believe Them?
I remember discussing this topic with my ex Jennifer Aniston.
(This was way before she was with Brad P)

We were discussing the psychology behind why people lie, and why people believe them.

We concluded that some people will just believe anything.

Some writers want fast and instant money. With a lot of spinners, rewriters and other article software, they grab the benefit from that. Some buyer is satisfied enough with that service. Because the buyer maybe need quantity articles to dominating search engine with hope can get best results.

About the lie of the writer, internet is a good opportunity. I mean you can't see the writers face when he/she lying about their service so they are not so shy and they keep doing it with "internet" condition. It's like, "No problem, you can't see me when I'm lying." So the lying service keep go on.

I'm not sure what the title of this thread and your example have in common. Some writers just plain suck. That's a fact. But that doesn't mean they're going to tell you they suck in their promo. And it doesn't mean they're lying either.

It's up to you (and me and he and she) to figure out who's who and what's what. This isn't new to online marketing. This has been the situation since the first ad went out back BC or earlier. There's nothing at all to be gained by fretting over it. Get used to it. Be glad you've got the stuff to recognize garbabe.

Just like with anything else online I always purchase a sample to test out. If it works out then great, if not I just chalk it up to being in business on the internet. There are always going to be unethical promotions and sales copy, it's up to us to use our judgement for what is worthwhile and what isn't.

It is called wishful thinking, when people lack skepticism they tend to believe what they want to believe. It is not only online but everywhere. Religion is one example of the same subject. They want to make millions but don't want to work for it so they try to buy every "Secret" to make the shortcut to wonderland.
"Wishful thinking is interpreting facts, reports, events, perceptions, etc., according to what one would like to be the case rather than according to the actual evidence. If it is done intentionally and without regard for the truth, it is called misinterpretation, falsification, dissembling, disingenuous, or perversion of the truth."

Scammers are masters of the trigger words, the ones that make you compelled to find the buy button.. They usually have the gift of telling you what you want / need to know, if they put half the effort into building a quality product to compliment their "gift" they would be at the top of the mountain more often than not.

I have to agree with B and B and say it is a part of doing business on the net, even here on the forum bad products surface. Just be careful and you get wiser every day to the crap.

I've learned a lot on how to pick the right people for outsourcing services like articles, link building, etc. Most of them are lying about the quality, which causes my Ezine account to be downgraded back to Basic Plus. Even on my current project, I wrongfully hired an Ezine writer from India who promises quality and approval for my articles, but in the end all of his articles were rejected by Ezine and wants to keep my money for the efforts he had.

Thankfully I've hired a trusted Native American writer, who successfully published my clients' articles on Ezine and save me from refunding the whole amount to the client.

Lying is part of their strategy to make money from their services, but hey I hate liars.

I totally agree with you LeeLee on this, the reason why people lie they are native English writers and all is, many people want a native writer to write for them and claiming yourself a native can easily give you job.
They don't understand one thing that it can be easily judged by your writing if you are a native writer or not.
A native will think in English & write in English and other will think in their own language and then translate it into English which many times will create difference.

Rather then claiming that you are native convince client that You are not native but you can provide content which even a native cant..

I provide article writing service and in my entire life I never claimed that ( My Writers are Native) I can assure about quality but will not lie about my identity.

    Cheers!!

I think that a lot of English is not first language people lie about their credentials, saying that they have college degrees in English or their writers are native English writers and I've found that NOT to be the case many times.

It's obvious from the first article, even if the sample is professionally written, that they are not native English writers or even good writers. I think that some actually do think that they are good writers.

When I'm hiring for articles, I order a very small quantity at first as a test. These writers tend to be pretty cheap, so if you want higher quality articles, you'll most likely have to pay more.

Thanks for this post Michael. Some other people got what I was getting at but you really got it.

The article and sales page were just an example. There are others here on the forum. I did not buy this article. I did once buy a book about writing. The sales page was very persuasive. The product was not. The amount of errors (and I mean huge glaring errors, not picayune things) was astounding especially considering the topic. There's lying. And in this case there were just big huevos. It was so bad I was momentarily stunned.

I guess I am naive and hold people to a higher standard.

In the OP example I used, it might have sufficed to simply claim to write great articles. That would be subjective and open to interpretation. I also conceded that being a "professional" would likewise be subjective. Being a native English speaker however is not subjective.

That covers the original lie. The worse lie is the reviews. Perhaps the reviewers were the seller's buddies. I sure hope so because I would hate to think fellow Warriors would hold their brethren in such low regard as to encourage them to waste their money.

I'm not saying to give a bad review. I wouldn't want to be the one to crush someone else's dream regardless of how they are going about achieving it. A reviewer can either be gently critical or leave no review at all.

    Why do people lie?

Because it's easy. Hey, on the internet, you can be anyone you want to be. The better you make yourself sound, the easier it will be to earn a quick buck. (And make no mistake, these people aren't looking for return business like a legitimate company is. Instead, they want enough people to buy into their garbage so that they can turn a quick profit and move onto the next sucker)

    Why do people believe them?

In the case of many people, they want to believe that they really can get articles/web design/other legitimate services for next to nothing. If they find a diamond in the rough, great. If not, it's onto the next bargain-basement offer.

  • Before paying for these services do your homework. It's not difficult to check sources. A few years ago I wanted to buy an information product that was a hefty investment. I actually called several people who had testimonials on the sales page to find out "real time" their experience with the product and the claims of follow up on the product. It took some time but was worth it for the piece of mind.

Lets start with why you believe them:

You are lazy. You can't be bothered typing 500 word article about the moped exhaust pipes for instance. Naturally, you decide to open your wallet and buy the time instead of putting it in.

    Why do they do it?

It's easy short-term income. They ousource it themselves for a 3rd your paying them.

I've tried many services and I still haven't encountered anyone who uses decent English. So my advice to you is: pay as little as possible and edit them yourself or pay a native speaker to edit them for you. If I pay 30 cents per 150 words I am happy no matter how terrible the writer is, since it's a no brainer to edit 150 articles instead of writing 150 of them.

    You're missing the reality here.

    90% of everything is garbage.

Just a few years ago, the people on the internet were a special elite class of people who were better than anyone else, at least in our own opinions.

Today, everyone is on the internet. Even your dumbass kid brother who writes poems about eating paste.

He was still doing that before he had the internet. It's just that now he's got a blog where everyone can read his poems, and he's linked you as "family" on Facebook so everyone knows you're related to him, and now the cute blonde girl you met at the party looks you up before your big date and thinks it's funny to make jokes about eating paste all through dinner.
