I'd like to get some feedback on the different ways you launch a new product or service. I understand that a lot has to to with the type of product or service being launched. But on the whole, is it:

better to try build a social media following

go to paid review sites

advertise (if you have the budget)

try get offline coverage in traditional media (if so, anyone got tips and tricks?)

The best way is always social attention.
The best product lauches always start off by giving something great away for FREE such as a video with valuable content or even a little app that does something useful. They use this FREE item to generate traffic and build a list which they then market the launch of the paid product too. The idea is to create a sense of anticipation, the people on your list need to think its a big deal and so much better than the FREE stuff you've given. Professional product launchers have a carefully crafted system in regards to sending out emails to their list. Its always designed to create the right emotions in the reader without sounding like your desperate for a sale. As always, a potential customer needs to feel like your product/service fixes a problem or resolves a need. Theres a lot of psycology in product launches. The best in the business is Frank Kern.

With affiliates a JV's you need to obviously have a good product/service but you need to offer a good incentive for them to offer what your selling. A lot of online lauches have affiliate and JV competitions which is never a bad idea.

Thanks for that reply sitehero... Agreed that free teaser is a great promotional tool. But you still have to get the word out about that... Offering a free giveaway on your site won't initially drive traffic, it will just engage any traffic that is already there.

I guess my question is then, what is the best way to get your marketing message (in this instance, a free giveaway) across. I suspect most social media sites view free giveaways as self promotion?

apart from a list, forum posting does well for me,
plus facebook ads linking to a fb fan page with
useful free content for an opt in

    - J'V's is the best option.
-Also a heavy Google ad campaign
-Facebook ad campaign might work depending on the niche.
-If its B2B - LinkedIn might be effective as well

Forget about the product. Focus on YOU.

Tom Peters wrote The Brand Called You | Fast Company way back in 1997.

    Peters says:

"Regardless of age, regardless of position, regardless of the business we happen to be in, all of us need to understand the importance of branding. We are CEOs of our own companies: Me Inc. To be in business today, our most important job is to be head marketer for the brand called You."

    Read the article, digest it.

Once you understand that you're a brand, you'll understand why IM gurus never sell a product. They sell themselves, over and over again.

So, again, forget the product already -- remember Brand You.

Work out what you want, and what you have to offer. Then work on becoming visible, and getting known for what you do.

If you can do that, you can sell anything -- a product launch will become just another way to promote Brand You.

Personally, the best way I've found is to focus on JV partners and affiliates. Good affiliates are overwhelmed with products to promote, although it may vary by niche.

Personally I like to try to get affiliates on board. You will need to offer them a lot of incentives to promote - give the ones you trust a review copy so that they're comfortable promoting to their subscribers. Give them prizes and a good commission. Give them promo tools like email swipes, banners, PPC ad copy, etc.

Other methods like social media can work depending on your niche, and you may want to go for some paid traffic to quickly test your conversions and do some split testing.

    Hope that helps!

Social media user targeted advertising. Organic seeding in forums, legit reviews, people can smell fake ones a mile away.

Thanks for the replies guys... angela99, I read that article you mentioned - was very interesting.

I'm going to go away and try a few things and I'll post any newsworthy updates here.

In particular, I'm going to try and get exposure via niche authority sites and figures - as opposed to marketing directly to the customer since my particular service has very broad appeal. Getting good reviews by respected sites is one of my current goals.
