Need some help with a product name " MOW POP", Kinda boxed into a corner.

around a month ago, we released a product here on wf named MOW POP and from the name you can quickly gather that its popup software...and thats where our problem lies.

At first we decided to create a wordpress popup plugin, with a drag and drop editor, to make it as easy as possible for anyone to use. And it worked GREAT and we have got nothing but positive feedback. BUT we also got 1000 feature requests and have implemented most of them. Monday ( We think if everything is ready) we are going to release ver 3.0 but the problem is, with all the new features, popups are now a very small part of what it can do, but by focusing on the name mow pop we have made naming/marketing the product much more difficult.

Im going to list the main features of V1 and V3 and if anyone could help me with how it should be marketed I would greatly appreciate it, Do we need to change the product name, and release as a new product ( If we do this YES anyone that bought would be upgraded just to cover that question upfront lol ) or..... I dunno an or lol Ill name the old/new features and would love some help in figuring out the best coarse of action with this...it got me stumped along with the members of the team.

Ver 1.0 Features :
-Actual Drag And Drop Editor.
-Timed Popups
--Exit Popups
-Exit Popups with alerts
-Then the ability to set multiple popups per page in rotation, and run spilt tests, as it tracked popups and clicks.
-import any form code in 1 click....aweber, mail chimp etc.....
-over 2000 preset images to be used
-image uploader
+ more

Ver 3.0 Features
-all the features of ver 1 +
-Sticky banners ( top bottom left or right slide ins)
-Hover text ( appears in bubble when "keyword" is hovered on similar to advertising scripts)
-Tabbed slide ins ( ex : tab says "contact us" and when you click it the contact form you designed in the editor slides out ... you define what that the tab says and design the form in the editor)
-shortcodes , build it in the editor then take the short code and put in on a page
-rotating shortcodes, rotate through multiple froms on page page load by entering more than one id in the shortcode.
-widgets - add a shortcode to a text widget and it will pull the code for the design made in the editor into the widget
-templates - a bunch of designs we did in the editor that are in a template section, that you can load into a popup, widget or page and modify in the drag and drop editor.
-better tracking system
+ much more......

if anyone wants to see the video for ver 2 you can watch it at WordPress Popup Plugin | Popup Plugin Software | MOW POP .

You can see how we painted ourselves into the "popup" corner. and now the plugin can essentially control an entire site if you want, you can design full pages, the header of the site, the footer widgets, popups, slid-ins, tab sliders, text ads and we are still adding things for the next release. plus a bunch of stuff that I didn't cover here.

So my question, is should we repackage as a new name? or keep the name people have become use to and do a better job marketing features.

I guess its a good problem to have, but at the same time really confusing lol.

Anyway Ill stop rambling, I assume people here have run into simalar issues, and may be able to lend us some advice. Thanks in advance!

Evan

It sounds like a good opportunity to diversify into two products. Why not sell them as two different products since it does so much more than just pop-ups. The cross sell opportunity within your current stable of customers would be tremendous.

I don't really want to go down that road, We said they would get free updates, and that's really what it is. So anyone that bought will get the new updates regardless. I'm more talking about future sales how we should approach it

To me, free updates and adding features are almost mutually exclusive. In your case you aren't talking about updating current features (free updates) but adding completely new features that have nothing to do with the core functionality you initially sold. I don't think anyone would have the right to be upset if you came out with a complimentary product as long as the product they've purchased still functions as promised. I think you're leaving a lot of money on the table here.

Edit: To add to this, you initially sold a pop up plugin in. Now it would seem that you have an entire marketing suite of products. Just because Microsoft got you hooked with Word doesn't mean they have to throw in Excel, Powerpoint, and Access in for free to existing users of Word. It is functionality outside of the scope of the original product. As long as you keep supporting that original product you can definitely branch out. Don't sell yourself short.

          Cru,

          You make some good points.

I know it may seem "dumb" (and it is a little harder to do this at first), but we are "branding" what we do with MOW (the 3-letter acronym of our main website) in front of our products. THAT being said...

          1) What would you (or anybody else) name this suite of products?
          2) If we decide to package all the features into the same product... is it still MOW POP or can you think of another name besides MOW Pop?

          Thanks.

Thanks , Never really looked at that way..ill run it by the team and see what they have to say. Im thinking we will allow users that already bought to upgrade for free, but may market it as an all in one for future sales. But not 100% sure which way will go, think We may draw the answer out of a hat lol.

I wouldn't feel right not letting the people that helped us build the tool, sent in the bug requests and suggested the features not getting a copy. And am excited to let them see what all there suggestions look like. So they will definitely get a copy.

hehe thanks Jay. I feel without the hundreds of emails we received for feature requests, and people allowing us to test on there sites etc, we really couldn't have gotten it to where it is now. So without them test launches were people got to put there hands on it, and figure out what it was missing, we never would have thought of half the stuff. So essentially everyone that bought the first 2 versions help us write the current version. Just the way I look at it .

Here is a way I think you can make everyone happy.

You break it into two categories:
            • You have MOW POP being sold for X
            • You have the MOW Marketing Suite (or MOW POP Deluxe) selling for X+Y
Those who have the previous version of MOW POP are automatically upgraded to suite and grandfathered in. MOW marketing suite should include everything and be positioned as a premium offering... however if you don't need all the bells and whistles you can still just buy the MOW POP regular edition.

It will allow you to fully monetize new customers while keeping the old ones happy.

I think we have a winner, and it also allows us to have a lower price point for those that just want popups and are not interested in the other features. And keeps all our customers happy

Like the names you suggested also . Thanks a million for taking the time to read over the thread and come up with suggestions. If you like ill keep you in mind when we are looking for people to review the new package.

We have to figure this out now and go down a set path and think you have helped tremendously Thanks again!

No problem. I would be more than happy to check out a review copy. Keep me in mind and send me a PM when the time is right. It was my pleasure helping you out, I love the community at WF and try to give back as often as possible.

You can get a single site license (at least for now) FREE. The single site license does have an automatic link to our website. To remove the link and to be able to use this product on multiple sites (including your own and your customers') you can get the developer's license for $47.

      Thanks.
