Writing articles to generate revenue

Hi all

I've been careful how I've worded the above, and I suspect I'm going to get grilled here, but despite the countless threads that cover article marketing, syndication and writing in general I just don't get it.

Before anyone jumps down my throat and calls me a lazy git, I seriously have searched the forum but I'm finding that (a) most of the posts assume some knowledge how to make money writing articles - and I have none and (b) there's just so much stuff out there.

I write for a living in my day job so it's not the writing per se that confuses me. It's words like syndication (what the hell is that?) and the way the whole system works.

I'm asking a lot here guys I know and I can hear the groans already. It's worth pointing out however that comprehensive though this forum is, it's sometimes just too much for a newbie. Because much of the stuff expressed on here is subjective (and from what I read sometimes, just plain wrong) the forum can actually confuse matters for me.

I always enjoy reading posts from Alexa and one or two others who seems to know the ins and outs of how to do article writing (I'm trying hard not to use the word 'marketing') but I always find the level of conversation just slightly above my level of understanding. I'm not thick ... just a bit green :confused:

I just need to know how the process works and how to do it properly. If there's a course that you can recommend I'll buy it. If there's some links you can give me I'll look at them. If there's a resource you recommend, fire away!

Thanks
YC

In my world, I believe that it is important to create content that people want to read and are happy to have read when they have finished reading the article.

The first step to making money as an article writer is to talk to the people most likely to buy from you, then giving those folks the kind of content they are happy to have read.

If you come across as someone trustworthy with a valuable point of view, people will want to know more about you.

In doing so, people will read your resource box, and take the action you want them to take.

i.e. Visit my website to learn more about how I can help you accomplish your goals, as discussed in the article.

When people visit your website and buy what you are selling, and the traffic came from your articles, then you have accomplished success as an article writer.

If you sell a service, one of the most effective ways to address your article is to tell people how to do the task themselves, then let them know in the resource box that if they don't want to do it themselves, you can help them. Show them how hard it is to do on their own, and how easy it is for them to hire you to do it for them.

If you sell a product, share some information important to those people who will be interested in buying the product.

Work backwards when you write articles...

Figure out who is most likely to buy what you are selling, then give them the kind of information that they may be interested in reading. Then in the resource box, tell them how you can help them.

Some of the best content producers I know are not trained writers. They are people who can write in a way that others can understand regardless of whether that is writing an involved ebook with 15-20 thousand words or a 150 word product description. Having a niche that you excel in can make you more valuable while being a more rounded writer can keep you much busier. Most writers have a topic(s) they prefer to write about but will write about almost any subject they can research.

Syndication of your articles is just like syndicating an old television program. In order to enjoy the success of a certain program, the original network or production company will sell the rights to another company in order for them to gain viewers from fans of the show. Article syndication from a directory may or may not involve the transfer of money but the concept is the same. A good article can then be placed on a number of sites where it can be seen by more people.

If you are just getting started writing content, it may serve you well to go to a writing service and become an author for one of them while you continue your education. As you develop a taste for writing and understand more about how the industry operates you can begin to do some freelance work while still earning from another source.
