Anyone make retail purchase through Mobile/Tablet?

I keep hear people saying Mobile Market is BIG, profitable and scalable. I do purchase some mobile (ipod touch and ipad) apps, but I have never purchased retail product from such as books, electronics etc directly from my phone. I still prefer opened the computer to make retail online purchase.

In your opinion, both from Customer or Marketer point of view..
1. As customer, have you make online purchases through mobile/tablet device (Such as ipad, iphone, android tablet etc) OTHER than apps/music/books? If yes, what kind of product do you buy?

2. As a marketer, have you got any sales from Mobile/tablet devices?

  • I never made a purchase but I read a news article that people are spending over 300+ million dollars by shopping on their mobile/tablet devices
  • I've purchased a few items here and there from apps on my phone, Only concern was if my card number could be stolen along with my information. Other than that every thing went smooth as if i'm using a computer.
  • I was just getting used the idea of depending on my Android phone for more and more activities. And then one day the phone just died--completely--taking all my messages, phone log and other personal data with it, as I had to send it back to get a replacement.

    That experience has made me think twice about depending on a device that is not only relatively fragile (ever read your email while on the can and drop your phone in the toilet?) but also has potential security issues.

    I know mobile is supposed to be the new big thing, but I'm still going to be doing my financial transactions from my home or laptop computer.
  • I think a lot of mobile purchases are tightly integrated, e.g. app purchases (iPhone or android), in-app purchases (up selling from that app) and ebooks (via kindles etc.)... I'm not sure if there is any big push to sell your regular items via mobile directly from a mobile friendly site - unless there is a big need to do something 'now', or trigger something that is location based... so very contextual.
  • I've never made a purchase through my phone (no iPad yet!) and honestly, I don't think I want to. The amount of research I put into buying things online would take me too long to browse. I sit on my computer much longer than that.

    I don't consider mobile/tablet purchases in my business at all. It's just not a market for me.

    I haven't made that many purchases yet, but I have made a
    few. I've made a ton of sales because I've focused on that
    for certain niches.

  • Yes to both - more so on my iPad, larger purchases are done on my desktop though, more so because I like to print out PDFs of my confirmation pages

    thanks for the replies, that's really help us internet marketer what to do in 2012. So, looks like people only buy cheaper and virtual goods (music, apps, ebooks) and prefer buy physical goods or higher ticket item on desktop.

    Looks like in next year, we will still focused to desktop, aren't we?
  • Apps (iPad and Android), music (digital and CDs), books (digital and hard copy), and some electronic stuff. Not a huge amount, but fairly regular, especially the music and books. Those are my most common purchases anyway, so the medium for ordering doesn't matter much to me.

    "Strangest" purchase was while I was out last week and a friend who was DJ'ing hit me with a blank look when I mentioned Miles Davis. I bought MP3 versions of "So What" and "Blue in Green" for him and he moved them from my phone's card to his computer. All while I was playing pool.

    I bought a gift copy of a book recently for another friend while we were having dinner. She got it a few days later. I would not have remembered to order it if I'd waited until I got home.

    I suspect "social" orders like that could do well, if you find a way to encourage them. Impulse things that are more like buying someone a drink than actually giving them a gift.
